Frohe Weihnachten! 🎄 This prototype is currently en route for repairs and production generational updates. We look forward to showing you the updated prototype and delve into the fixes involved. In later conversation, the trigger is supposed to be 7-8lbs, but i'm sure the prototype trigger is more there as a proof of concept. We wanted to show this run regardless, since it's often times more interesting to understand the development process. Yes the production rifles are great, but that doesn't show the difficulty involved in small arms development. Merry Christmas! 🎄
@9HoleReviews2 жыл бұрын
A bit more info: Their production models are actually reliable because they had to use prototypes like this to figure out what the issues lie. Same with the Germans developing the FG42 in the first place. This was actually initially not supposed to be aired, but i twisted his arm to air it because I wanted to address how difficult it is to run a small arms development program. "Imagine spending $500k on tooling and first production parts for the prototype to not work, then spending another few years to tweak it until it does, still be in a financial red and have to buy a lot more materials to push production, ensure QC is working, and actually have production models that buyers are quite happy with. " ---> This is the prototype that we are working on. Also RE: the firing pin ignition I think my comments could have been misleading. There's an acceleration spring, but even with it, we had big problems touching off primers with a limited lock speed since the entire carrier and piston group has to move forward like an open bolt machine gun to gain the momentum. The entire BCG/piston pulls moves forward like an M240 type long stroke system and is mostly reliant on the recoil spring to push it forward. We initially thought that this may only be an issue with the repro prototypes until we worked with a source who wishes to remain anonymous... he worked with some real FG42 type 1, and when they tried to shoot them on semi, this was 100% a very big problem where it would not fire over and over again. Only on full auto was it truly reliable to ignite the military primers.

The no assault rifle note is important. There's a reason it's the FG42 that really captivated the US and got them trying to make a universal light rifle that could be a rifle, automatic rifle, carbine and submachine gun, that eventually in a staggering lack of ambition they tried to fill with the M14.

The thing is, it wasn't actually that good a concept. I mean, it *sounds* like a good concept, but it didn't really work any better for Germany than it did for America (although at least the Germans never intended the FG-42 to be a wide-issue weapon). Arguably it worked for the Swiss, but their needs are unique, and they've moved to a more-or-less normal assault rifle since then.

I live in NYC and have a lot of law enforcement officers, some retire, in my American Legion post. The issued service pistol has a high trigger weight. A 3-lb trigger is considered light. Typical triggers are 5 lbs. Heavy triggers are like 7 lbs. NYPD triggers are somewhere around 12 lbs. However I heard they will be issued Blocks with 5 lb triggers starting a few months ago. Studies found a significant increase in accuracy with the 5-lb trigger. I am a very proud owner of an SMG Type 2 rifle - and yeah, I would agree: there are some issues with the gun, none that make it not worth owning, but it certainly wont be my "Oh shit the world is ending" rifle. For me the biggest issue is in two categories: magazines and ammo. The mags are of course very old surplus and its not like my local gun store sells these things in bulk.... The ammo issue: some brass seems to be softer than others, and I know low quality brass tends to "Shave" in my rifle and that build up of brass shavings can cause the bolt to be stiff to open. Lastly, when the gun gets hot, it does tend to be extremely difficult to charge: I remedied this issue with Red Anti-Cease grease. Putting that grease in the cam track of the bolt and generously lubing my firing pin fixed that problem. --> Note: this is not the cam track for the locking lugs, I dont recommend that. As for the poor ejection: this is due to the bolt being difficult to cam, and it should also be remedied with grease in the firing pin area. Hope this helps anyone else who has one of these beauties!

That's something hard to explain to some guys. People either appreciate the craftsmanship that it took to bring a super cool obsolete design to life (which is probably us), while some say it's bad because a $750 S&W MP15 has better reliability without understanding the amount of development time that the AR15 has had opposed to the FG42. SMG has resurrected this design and made it as close to the original as possible. There were flaws that SMG tried to mitigate, but they wanted to the gun to be as close to the original as possible. You have to understand the quarks, like not mistakenly buying a box of Soft Tip brass 8mm with boxes of FMJ 8mm Brass, as that thing HATES soft tip. It's one of those things like the Type 94 Nambu, aka the Suicide Nambu. There's nothing inertially wrong with shooting a Type 94 as far as i'm aware, BUT you got to be EXTREMELY careful handling it.

Once I have installed a set of production parts in the rifle, made some checks, and re-test fire it I will return it and hope it behaves better for you. I will have to say that in the past I have seen people request such a long range test and I have sorta cringed at the thought since I have never shot it past 200 but you guys made us proud! Thanks for persevering when the easy thing to do would have been to send it back and say something like" can't deal with that". It will always have issues with some types of ammo but you should not have to deal with that trigger pull or failure to eject! When we would have such ongoing issues early on I kinda wanted to just throw it in the pond beside the shop and say "next". Thank you guys again, and happy New Year.

The prototype seems exceptionally accurate, especially with the gyrations against the post, railing, and deck. One would think the scope zero would not have held up. If they can fix the enumerated problems, this would be a really good rifle.

I read (but can't verify) that a German battalion was surrounded on the Eastern Front, maybe right after Stalingrad, and asked Command that a relief force be sent to rescue them. Instead they were airdropped 700 brand new FG42 still in shipping crates and they were able to breakthrough and get back to German lines.

Despite its obvious drawbacks, this gun is both technological and design marvel. It's basically an engineer's showoff. Like these incredibly complex and intricate ball contraptions. Useless, but at the same time amazing.

I don't know how I only just found your channel. Subbed, and watching a bunch of your videos :) The grip angle on that thing is crazy. I really like the old german rifles- the engineering was like everything in Germany at the time... Overthought, and usually overbuilt. But complicated.

Exactly what you expect from a prototype. Does it function? Yes. Does it still need more work? Yes. Takes a lot of time and work to get a prototype built and working is a feat in itself. Keep working on it guys. You will figure it out and make it hum

In a way, you're really lucky to have gotten the old extractor. Now you got to see EXACTLY what the engineers had to deal with, thus really digging into the re-development... It meant a shit day on the range, but great learning opportunity, I got to admit I'm really jealous in that regard. The charging handle issue might be a simple fix (whether that's what the Germans did or not); A fold down handle with a slight underside cover that keeps object away.

Yeah that’s the hard thing to explain, it’s really interesting to solve puzzles but often times the Internet demands perfection on everything over an educational moment
