Ricordo ancora l'odore di "nuovo" quando ancora bambino accompagnai mio padre a ritirarla in concessionaria. Per anni, senza mai un problema, la "mitica" mi ha portato alle vacanze estive, alle scampagnate in campagna, quando questo Paese ere giovane, e ruggiva. Ciao papà, e grazie di tutto!

My first car was a 1966 Fiat 1100D in New York. I liked the car (it was my father's), but I never had the money to properly take care of it. The differential was worn and actually screamed when I drove. Conversations were impossible, something that the factory knew about because under the back seat were two different types of sound proofing. Also, in the trunk of the car, there was a nearly 3/4 inch layer of asphalt used as additional sound dampening. It had been painted with body color at the factory. My car had a one piece driveshaft. I understand that some cars had a 2 piece driveshaft with a center bearing, presumably because of the noise problem. One funny story about the car - When I was driving back to college in West Virginia from Long Island, N.Y. with a fellow classmate, it began to rain. The windshield wiper crank assembly was so worn out that the wipers would periodically jam, forcing me to reach under the dashboard and yank on the cross piece assembly near the wiper motor to free it. This became a real pain in the ass. What I needed was some sort of weight tied to the assembly. My Friend was fast asleep in the passenger seat so I pulled over to the side of the road and untied his left shoe lace. Then carefully picked up his leg and retired his shoe to the wiper assembly under the dashboard (he was really in a deep sleep). I started the car and turned o n the wipers. It worked! As we drove in the rain my friends foot would go up and down under the dashboard, keeping just enough weight iin the assembly to keep it from jamming. After about a half hour, he woke up (He was dreaming he was walking) when I explained the situation to him, he simply removed his foot from the shoe, leaving it to continue its constant up and down motion under the dashboard for the next 6 hours. It was amusing, but it worked. Later, I installed a spring on the wiper assembly to keep a constant downward pull in the mechanism. Eventually, the car was completely rusted out due to salt on the roads of New York and I drove it finally to a scrap yard where it was crushed into a cube. Such a sad fate. Ooh, one more memory. As I said, I never had any money as a student and so I put off a lot of important maintenance chores. The clutch began to slip because it was worn out. I ignored it because most of Long Island is flat, however, there is this little village called Northport which is down on the water. There is a long hill coming up from the harbor to the village of Greenlawn. After a couple of hours in a bar down in Northport, I got into the car and started up the hill... The car started to slow down, even though the motor was beginning to rev up. Soon, the car started moving backwards down the hill, smoke coming out of the pedal assembly on the floor. I ended up right where I started. It took me an hour trying to find nice gentle climbing roads to get back home.

Ho avuto la FIAT 1100 D dal 1968 al 1970 ,sono d’accordo su tante cose che sono state dette ma non sull’affidabilita’ del motore ,lo era quello precedente quando era 1100 ,ma il D che era stato portato a1200 aveva perso la sua proverbiale affidabilità ,anche se tutto il resto era rimasto perfetto , i nuovi motori del 1100 D dai 20000 ai 50000 km saltavano tutti ,tanto è vero che moltissimi esemplari furono riportati fuori dello stabilimento Fiat , poi fecero il totalmente nuovo motore 1200 che fu montato sulla prima 124 è quello fu veramente un motore azzeccato , fecero anche il 1400 e il 1600 sempre sul corpo e pianale vettura 124 Fiat.

Fra le auto d'epoca la Fiat 1100 D è il modello di Fiat 1100 con più esemplari ancora esistenti,quindi tanto male non andava.

@@jimposh3010 forse proprio perchè, a causa del motore sbagliato, veniva abbandonata anzitempo, e molte si sono mantenute, le altre venivano spremute fino all'osso...anch'io ho saputo di casi...

Io l’ho’ avuta mi sento d’accordo quasi su tutto quanto è stato detto ,una macchina sobria in tutti i sensi ma non sull’ affidabilità del motore ,la FIAT su questo modello fece l’errore di mettere lo stesso monoblocco del vecchio e affidabile 1100 igrandendo e allargando l’ alesaggio per portarlo a 1200 così facendo le camere di combustione erano troppo vicine e i motori avevano poca lunga vita per i troppi surriscaldamenti ,la mia fu portata insieme a tantissime altre fuori della FIAT propio per morie di motori premature , fu messo in pensione sostituito dal più moderno efficace e affidabile 1200 chiamato 124 .

Very nice. My uncle had one of these. One 1800, and one 2300. But he never ran the 1100 in 4th gear. I told him that it was 4 gears, but he didn't change up from 3rd gear. Poor engine. :(

We ran it in 4th gear and reached upto 130kmph in upward gradient, just mantain the engine, it has got superb engine, excellent power for that time.

il motore non era per niente affidabile e neanche i freni erano a livello ottimale, non è giusto non parlare anche dei difetti...la 124 è stata molto meglio
