I learned how to install slate when I was about 15, I was working in a Pittsburgh suburb for a company that came from New York and brought the old heads, so we never used pre-drilled nor those copper centering rivets but we always used copper nails. That was in 93-94 and since then the only time I install slate is for repairs, all of the new ones are synthetic slate. I love installing slate, there's just something so satisfying but I also found out about how sharp it is when I had a twenty stack slide down my arm coming up a ladder and unwilling to let them go, be safe and beautiful work. Just tore off a 30-square slate roof. and brought some down in buckets lowered by rope and some by hand I cut myself a few times a few a little too close for comfort 😂😂

Only copper rivets needed on this type of slate aluminium nails are fine. Copper nails only specified on natural slates. Uk roofer of 20 years 👴

In Florida composite shingles require 6 nails. Would this be usable in Florida?

You would have to go though manufacture to find that out mate . You guys have harsher weather there but I will say there very durable 👍🏻

Essential because it holds the bottom down tight to the roof so no wind getting underneath

Hopefully these don't contain asbestos in the US. I just heard that it's not banned over there like it is in Europe. In Europe we have to hire specialized asbestos companies to safely remove the old fiber cement slates from the seventies.

those are old school nail/fasteners and are designed to keep the bottom of the shingle from lifting in high winds

it's not off he is using 25x 38 batten .. which I did not know you can use for composite slates .always thought 25 x50 was standard

Take a run of slate all the way up then on your desent install the copper rivets then go again saves moving the slate around and take 2 nails out your pouch at atime ,time is money
