You are so right. I started with one spindle. Now there’s a collection that’s out of control and I love every one of them.

I have drop spindles but I've found that I much prefer twirling them on the desk like a top over actually dropping them. Thanks for the recommendations, because I think it's time to switch!

I'm a TOTAL newbie to spinning -- I'm only trying it because a friend of mine gave me an ancient stone whorl and a bag of wool, and showed me the first steps. I watched a lot of videos but none so far went through all the beginner steps. Thank you for (a) working with the spindle with your left hand like I want to do, and (b) for describing each step thoroughly -- the mechanics as well as the motions. Cheers!

Tibetan spindling is really easy to use since I saw my aunty use this type of spindling while when I was a child.

I'm new to support-spindle spinning, and I've watched any number of how-to videos. Out of all of them, yours had the clearest instructions and the best camera angles. Your movements are slow enough to follow, and your encouragement is so very reassuring. I've been getting frustrated, and thinking that maybe spinning wasn't "my thing." I'm sure it can be meditative and peaceful, but right now it's anything but! But you helped me to see that I was on the right track, and I learned some crucial tips. Your spinning style is the closest to mine out of all the videos I've seen, which helped tremendously. I'm going to persevere, thanks to you...and also thanks to the fact that I already have a small collection of support spindles and don't want to waste them. ;) Thanks so much!

Thank you for this video! I've been intimidated by support spindles for a long time, but I have an (unrelated) shoulder injury right now that keeps me from using my drop spindles, so I decided to finally look up how to use a support spindle. You've totally demystified them enough that I'm encouraged to give it a shot!

Thank you very much for the instructions. But I have a question, if you are doing push and pull, is the thread hopping over the top of the spindle? Cause if I'm trying it without this "hopping over the top" the thread is already "parking" bevore there's enough twist on it.

This was a super helpful video for me- I feel that I learned a lot from watching your hands, and of course from what you said. I have a hybrid French-Russian style spindle on which I'm learning to spin lace weight using my own Wensleydale and Bluefaced Leicester sheep's fiber. It's more difficult than I thought it would be. I've taken a break from it and I went back to my wheel, but my beautiful spindle is really calling to me and after watching this wonderful video I'm very inspired to get back at it. Thank you!
@Fiberific7 жыл бұрын
+Lauren Macrae it is definitely different than wheel spinning for sure! I think it's important to move around our crafts, so we can have lots of projects on the go at the same time ! I am glad my video could help!
@lauriesfarm7 жыл бұрын
yes it is important, and I do... I do have "too many" projects on the go at the same time too LOL! I'm going to watch this video again to get another boost... I tried working with my support spindle the other day after watching this but only stayed with it a few minutes, the thing was flying out of the bowl across my table even though it seemed I was being careful, so decided I needed to wait till I've had less coffee and can be more zen while I'm doing it. Worked with drop spindle successfully today.

I have enjoyed watching your video several times. I have used a drop spindle and a Turkish spindle with some success, but really want to master using a supported spindle. Question: I noticed that some spinners use their left hand for the spindle and their right hand for the fiber and visa versa. What is your recommendation for the hand that actually spins the supported spindle? I am right-handed and the feel more comfortable using my right hand to spin the supported spindle.
@Fiberific7 жыл бұрын
This is supposed to be enjoyable for you, so you do what ever is more comfortable! I am one of those annoying ambidextrous types, so I swap my hands willy nilly... But you do what feels better, generally speaking though, I use my right hand to spindle and left in charge of the fluff, it just feels better to me... try both and go with what you like, juest remember which way you have spun so you don't mess up the ply ;)

Do you have to do anything after you spin the yarn? I love knitting lace shawls and would love to spin my own yarn.

Excellent Question. You need to ply it, give it a wash let it dry, and then you are off to the races.
