Thank you for doing this video! I fought for nearly 5 yrs against this diagnosis, it was exhausting in every way. Now I have it, there is actually no support through it. I can't exercise alone so it is a struggle. This gave me everything my health professionals haven't in quite this way. Sincerely..... Thank you

Go to a doctor who treats only pain. I take drugs called Baclofen and Ultram. I have been mistreated as well. I get angry and tell them off. I let them know how horrible they really are. I feel great after I do that They are not Gods, they are here to help , they just don't want to help you. Don't give up. A drug combination is out there for you. You have to find a DR that is willing to work with you. A pain control doctor, will do that.

I'm 39. My symptoms started at 14, diagnosed around 19. It seems like everyone says they have fibromyalgia now and doctors look at them like they are just drug seeking. It was so hard when I was younger and ppl, including doctors, would look at me, see my age, and think I was okay.

Folks I’ve been battling w fibro for 20 years. Best treatment is to exercise, drink spring mountain (naturally alkaline) water, make sure you take calcium/magnesium rich foods and above all TRUST JESUS for your healing. I know trauma, rejection, loss, depression and UNFORGIVENESS all play a role. Get rid of all these feelings as they can seriously block your healing

Exercise is fine if all that you have is FMS. If, on the other hand, you have M.E. (CFS or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) exercise can be your worst enemy. How do you tell the difference? According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) diagnostic criterion, one has to present with at least 11 out of 18 known trigger points to make a diagnosis of FMS. If fewer trigger points than this, M.E. must be the diagnosis. In my case, I have NO (zip, none) trigger points as examined by 3 independent rheumatologists each of whom passed a diagnosis of "probably Fibromyalgia" despite the lack of trigger points. Such is the incompetence of medical professionals here in Australia that NONE I have asked are willing to investigate my condition further. They simply "can't be bothered." So, I give up. 😡😡

It’s the *only* thing that helped me get to a place that I could move with less pain. I sleep better and finally have something to alleviate IBS pain, anxiety, and severe migraine symptoms, etc…. I have had fibro for many years, any form of exercise can leave me in so much pain that I have to stay in bed to rest it out. I often wonder if the pains in my knees at the age of 3 yrs old was an onset of the unknown fibro,I was diagnosed with “growing pains” which I’d hilarious because years later and at the age of 65yrs old I only ever reached 5 feet tall! I’ve suffered all my life, and now have other problems to..high blood pressure, diabetes, under active thyroid,I had a stroke whilst having a stent put in,and to be honest I’ve had enough. But thank you for your video, you have taught me far more than I have ever been told. Doctors in my area of England just seem ignorant of fibro, don’t believe you,or couldn’t give a dam.

Tina, I know what is like because I suffer from it too. For many years i was keeping it under control, spending many months of the year in hot climates countries where I could spend 2-3 hours X day exercising in a hot pool... Apparently, according to the hospital in London, it's the only thing to do that can help! Unfortunately, since this pandemic 😢 and with British climate.. impossible to travel and impossible to swim... there is no cure for it! Sorry 😞 try to stay warm and dry 🤗❤️

There is so much more I could say about many NHS Drs….. not very kind ! …one of my daughters has been suffering debilitating pain etc for 7 years and has been treated like an imbecile by several women doctors…. Finally I was diagnosed at 44 after decades of pain since childhood. The PMR doc said I had the 2nd worst case he'd ever seen. Disabled at age 50, even with meds, I still hurt all over. My greatest wish? Medicare would pay for accupuncture and therapeutic massage. I did so well with those! My insurance paid for the massage, I paid for the accupuncture for 4 months 3x/wk at $50 per session. There went my savings, and disability followed.

I want to be known for my energy and a person like me being called lazy hurts the core of me. The multiple joints pain , the fatigue , tenderness, morning sickness, struggling to sleep every night- has killed me for years. I need more doctors to be educated about this . The struggle is real. The moment when you want to do a lot but your body doesn't allow you to, that constant low feeling hurts 😭😭😭😭 My elbow joints hurt after writing 2 pages of my assignment and people don't understand things like that . I have had fibromyalgia for a long time. I am female, so I was treated as a hysteric, as menopausal, as a liar and faker. I had been an athlete for most of my life, so its onset was terrifying, literally terrifying. I am highly educated in a number of fields one being the sciences, so I am acquainted with the human body, but I have been treated like I am an idiot. Because I don't "look handicapped", I have been called a mental case, to the point where I won a groundbreaking lawsuit against a state agency. Did not matter. I have a handicapped placard on my car- and people have spit on me. My service dog and I have been physically ejected from stores, because I do not "look"ill. My doctor, instead of working through this with me to find a less painful life, just gives me 10 minutes and whatever pills. One day, she said, "oh, you have been on this 3 years? Should have only been 3 weeks."- and she had been seeing me for 19 years. I do my own research.....but, sometimes it is all too much.

I've had fibro and RA for well over 20 years now and the best way for me to manage is with consistent exercise, eating as clean as possible, taking Cymbalta in the AM and Zanaflex and Atarax for sleep at night. Though recently I began using a CBD gummy 3 weeks ago and not only does it help me get consistent sleep but it also helps to minimize pain throughout the day. CBD tinctures were not helping much for me but the gummy form I'm using has other pain relieving properties that work wonders. Staying active with walking, yoga & Pilates has seriously helped to manage pain profusely.

I have chronic pain and I also have fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis. It’s hard on my body I get tired very easily. I ran all the test and they all came back to that. I’m also battling breast cancer at the age of 49. It’s been a rough year for me but I’m optimistic but my body pain is just gotten worse to where I get up in the morning and I try to be active because the more active you are it’s better for your body. But about 1 o’clock in the afternoon my body screaming at me to where I need to go lay down for about an hour and rest. Fibromyalgia is really hard on the body because you’re in constant pain with the sweats in the just aggravation that comes with it because you don’t know how to express your pain to your partner and sometimes I don’t understand where your mindset is. I really like this video because I shared it with my husband so he understand it a lot better. I am so excited that I got to find your videos because it helped me a lot to understand it more because my doctor didn’t really understand fibromyalgia. I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia for about 20 years. I have tried most of the medications that you mentioned and they usually make me nauseous or worse. I do light yoga and walk for exercise..stronger exercise, like golfing sends me straight to bed with terrible pain. Thankfully years ago a doctor prescribed Tylenol with codeine, which you say doesn’t work for fibromyalgia but for me it is the only thing that does work. Over the years I have reduced the amount of it that I take, but nothing else really helps with my pain. Also to me the definition of hell would be waiting in multiple doctors and or therapy offices and spending my precious life hours being treated when I have found something that does work for me.. I don’t want to spend this time away from living life to go to doctors offices. That is not helpful but is stressful..I know what works for me even though you say it doesn’t. I think that you need to be less closed minded.

I also use Tylenol with codeine for my 30 year battle with fibromyalgia. The only help I have found but it does nothing for the debilitating fatigue. Nothing seems to help that or the brain fog which is horrendous. I am 76 and diagnosed in 1992 when my husband was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma which was a death sentence. I believe the anxiety and grief triggered the fibromyalgia.

@@jeannelange4820 Same here. My pain flared up and resulted in my diagnosis after my mother’s death, which quickly followed leaving a life I loved and moving across the country to be with her, which in turn was just a couple of years after a debilitating back injury. Many years ago, there was a lot of talk about how very stressful or traumatic experiences could trigger it, but I haven’t heard anything like that in recent years, so maybe it’s been disproven.

@@wendyannh My family had COVID last August. Thankfully, we were all asymptomatic... except it was "an event" that "triggered" me to have fibromyalgia and heart problems. Several people have told me an event, also "some kind of trauma," can initiate fibromyalgia. I just today received pregabalin, so we'll see. Anyway, just wanted to share that "events" are still considered triggers.

My doctor said (and I quote): You may be feeling pain, but there's no injury where you're feeling pain. Therefore the pain is all in your head, and I will not treat pain if there's no reason for it." I did take Vicodin for almost 3 years, as little as possible, and don't let anyone tell you that opioids do not work for Fibro pain. The problem is, Fibro is on-going, and you can't take Vicodin the rest of your life.

I find that they do too, but the body easily becomes addicted to them then it needs more to get the same effect. Tramadol was a nightmare for me as for many others and I went cold turkey with it when I saw that it was taking over. It is not at all easy to cope with pain I know, I sit here as I do every day with it going off all over my body like mini sharp fireworks. Wishing you well with your journey x

Thank you very much, Doctor. I was fortunate to be dx in my forties (now 67 yrs) but have had it at least since my twenties. Sadly my own family doesn’t understand or make any concessions, so my whole life I’ve exhausted myself trying to keep up with expectations. Finally, the pain has worsened with arthritis and I’ve become incapacitated. I think my life would have been more joyful if more understood. But I’m so grateful for all who have it that physicians like you now believe us and explore for solutions. ps in my situation, I lived in ‘fight or flight’ constantly since earliest childhood. I feel like my nervous system and hormones were always overwhelmed.

I can totally relate with you. I lived in a verbally abuse relationship for many, many years and lived in a fight and flight state day and night. I was always walking on eggshells. I was diagnosed when I was 50 years old and now 76. It has become more debilitating each year. Like you my family just doesn’t try to understand and I always try to carry on as best I can. Today I told my son, whom is 48 that ai wish I could travel all over the world like my brother does. My son said that I hold myself back and could do more than I do. It was so hurtful to me. He has no idea just how difficult it is for me to go and visit him and his family. He lives an hour away and it is such a struggle to drive there and even stay in another bed and not my own surroundings. I believe most of us who have Fibro work really hard to be as normal as possible even though we suffer excruciating pain and discomfort every minute of every day. Thank you for sharing your story. This Doctor is giving a REAL good outline of Fibro. Hugs and love to all my fellow sufferers. Try to give yourself lots of tender loving care, surround yourself with things you love and positive people and smile and laugh as much as possible. Love andmBig Hugs❤️🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦🌹🌹🌹🌹🌈🌻🦋🥰

Dear Dr. Andrea, I'm so happy to discover your channel. This is a great video with an excellent explanation. I'm a 43 years old suffering from fibromyalgia for many years. I believe I have it since my childhood but of course it couldn't been diagnosed back then. Since 2018 followed by physical assault, my condition worsened. It was diagnosed by rheumatologist as severe fibromyasitis. I was granted disability from our National Insurance Institute. In April 2020 it became very progressive and I hardly go out of home since then. I'm a mother of three kids and don't have any resources to get any kind of therapy in order to improve my condition inspite of being in a medical field myself because it is private and very expensive.

I love how Dr. Furlan explains all of her topics-- she is great, but the rest of the world is not like her and no one really cares. I am a person whose symptoms are far more extreme than most people with Fibromyalgia. I had had 3 major vehicle accidents on top of it, one of which I broke my femur, and a severe illness that complicated my case. I cannot get my pain under control. I am one a great deal of medications and I cannot get enough sleep and have no therapy support. I cannot live like this anymore.

Thank you so much! Just found your video. I see a pain management dr. who sent me to get muscle tests done (soooo painfull!!) and that dr. said 'has anyone ever told you that you probably have fibromyalgia?'. ugh, no. I just contacted the lab in southern calif. and am getting the blood test done that definitively says if you do or don't. That's why I started searching for videos on KZbin. I really liked how calmly and clearly you explained everything and I was able to take good notes. So much of what you mentioned as possible symptoms I have and years ago started being sensitive to cleaning products and loud noises. Thanks again Dr. Furlan!! :-) P.S. I have peripheral neuropathy for 4 yrs now and am gabapentin and tramadol. If this test is positive then maybe I will have to stop the tramadol...change to something else. And right now the last thing I want to do is move around...lol.

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia after having a colloid cyst removed in 2011. At that point in 2011, I had developed obstructive hydrocephalus, and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, and had to be revived on the way to the hospital. Along with my fibro, I have allodynia, so my skin hurts, and the cold, specifically, causes my skin to hurt. Wintertime is awful for me! I’m so glad I live in west central Texas, as opposed to up north, so the winters tend to be mild, for the most part.

You’re so kind and you present your findings with such compassion. I’m sure you’ve heard countless stories of those how’ve suffered additional pain from those in healthcare field, either from countless procedures, treatments, tests and so on, or from being treated as a hypochondriac. So many seem close minded when dealing with pain issues. Why can they not treat each person as an individual and really listen to what the person is experiencing and not try to put them in a “one size fits all” category or diagnosis?! I do emphasize with the caregiver, I’m sure they feel frustrated at not being able to cure or give significant relief. I’ve been through what I call “the lab rat” stage years ago and it was Brutal (almost as bad and sometimes worse then then conditions I was dealing with )! One of the best things I ever did was seeing a therapist who understood what was going on in my brain and helped me retrain it. Thank you for sharing this and for keeping an open mind when dealing with those in pain! It is NOT a “one size fits all” issue! ever! Abundant Blessings...

Thank you so much for putting out this video. I’ve been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue for about 12 years. You are one of three Physicians I’ve heard explain the issues of opioids in the brain and how they opioids only intensify pain and are of no help. I’m so grateful that the other are my physicians. I was addicted to pain killers for a long time and only by the grace of God I was able to break away from them, and it was the hardest things I’ve been through. I can say that I’ve found CBD, CBG & CBN to be quite effective. Especially for fatigue and concentration. It took me sometime to find the right company for me to purchase them. I finally feel like I’m on a good path. I’ve also found working is easier and walking extremely helpful. Yoga is my next hill to climb and then strength training. I’m ready for my next great adventure. Thanks again for all your work in putting together these videos. Please know your hard work isn’t going unnoticed!

Hi, My name is Linda, and I too have Fibromyalgia. After reading your comment, I became hopeful that there may be something that could offer me some relief from the pain associated with this debilitating illness. I have tried CBD oil, and if taken in larger amounts it does help some. The problem is that I have had chronic depression with anxiety since I was in my mid-twenties (I'm now 58). During the years since my diagnosis, I have experienced a almost constant mild to moderate level of depression; however, since 2009, I've battled five bouts of very severe depression. Interesting to note is that the depression is believed by some doctors I've seen to have resulted from Fibromyalgia that I most likely developed as a young girl. I had breast cancer in 2014, and my oncologist said there was probably a link between my breast tumour and Fibromyalgia due to decades of a suppressed body and mind. Imagine that. When I met my current specialist in 2012, he was against any use of Cannibus, medicinal or not. Over the years, like other physicians, he acknowledged that Cannibus was helping certain patients with various illnesses. He remains leery about me using larger doses of CBD, as Cannibus use has yet to be studied well nor are there results from long-term studies. He did refer me to a physician who specializes in Cannibus use who felt I would need a larger dose of CBD in order to try to control my pain. Meanwhile, my specialist would prefer I only use a third of the recommended dose, which does not help me with pain. He said that depression and Cannibus use written about within limited medical journals has suggested the use of CBD can cause depressive episodes in some patients, resistance to medical treatment in others, but yet a complete recovery from depression in others. Unfortunately, we are pioneers in the world of medicinal Cannibus. You wrote of CBG and CBN. Excuse my ignorance, but I am not familiar with either. Would you please consider writing to share the source you mentioned for purchasing products? If you are like me, I want to know that is is grown organically by an ethical company who I can rely on. If you would prefer to not write the company name here in a reply, I completely understand. If you would be so kind, you can reach me by sending me a Facebook Friend request perhaps. My Facebook name is Linda Smith McCormack Unfortunately, I am not permitted to share my email here. Thank you for taking the time to write your comment. God-willing, you may have helped many people suffering from Fibromyalgia more than you know! With gratitude, Linda Smith McCormack

I appreciate this video so much as at this moment I have been having a severe flare up. I have had a physical job for 25 years and it has damaged my neck/shoulder to the point that I can't do much without it sending me into a fibro headache/neck/shoulder strain hell. I think hearing from a physician that this is real and not in my head made me cry. Feeling crazy for 20 years creates the anxiety, depression etc. My gp has not really helped me much over the years. I'm glad that it is finally becoming known as a real illness. Lately, the fall months and weather pressure systems have really become a trigger for me. It is all so exhausting emotionally and physically. I have lived alone all these years after raising my kids on my own because fibromyalgia took over my life and I had no mental or physical energy for anyone else. I know that exercise is helpful because it gets me breathing properly; something that fibro pain does is has me holding my breathe a lot. But now I seem to overdo it more and more which creates very bad hip/bottom pain for me. I have only every take advil to relieve the pain which is really only takes about 30% of it away. Thank you for your video and I will be watching more of them to at least feel emotionally ok.

Thank you so much for your videos. I'm a GP practicing in Mboppi Baptist hospital Douala, Cameroon and I have learned a lot from your videos. We don't really have pain specialists in my country and so as a GP, i see so many people with pain issues. Some of which im usually clueless about what they are talking about. I have gotten more insight since I started watching your videos

I'm curious as to what your explanation is for those with fibromyalgia who have had positive results with opioids managing their pain. Many diagnosed with fibro found them to be the one medication that diminished the pain enough to allow exercise and the activities mentioned in the video. Of course it's crucial to pace oneself during these activities. In the past, doctors including rheumatologists would rely on feedback from patients on what medications worked. Many were on same opioid dose for years and even decades without hyperalgesia. Now that so many patients have been forcibly tapered from opioids, the increased pain has resulted in becoming homebound and health declines from inactivity. Would you say these patients have been misdiagnosed with fibro or maybe there's more to fibro than what is currently thought to be true?

Thank you for your question, it is a very good one. I have a couple of comments about it: 1) It is important to make sure that the diagnosis of fibromyalgia is done properly. I found that many patients are labelled as fibromyalgia, but they have other conditions that can explain the pain, such as osteoarthritis, myofascial pain, neuropathic pain, etc. 2) If the person truly has fibromyalgia, then the endogenous opioid is altered (overactive) and may be contributing to the ongoing pain of fibromyalgia. For this reason naltrexone provides some relief. 3) There is no evidence that opioids provide long-term benefits from randomized trials. In fact, there is evidence from observational studies showing that patients on opioids have worse quality of life than patients with fibromyalgia who are not on opioids. We need to remember that there is high quality strong evidence that other drugs, exercises, mind-body therapies, are effective for fibromyalgia. 4) The only opioid that showed some minor effects in fibromyalgia was tramadol, and it might have been because of the serotonin effects. 5) The side effects of opioids will aggravate the symptoms of fibromyalgia, such as fatigue, mental fog, low mood, poor concentration, sleep apnea, low sex hormones, poor immune response, etc. 6) The other medications that are effective for fibromyalgia (duloxetine, pregabalin and milnacipran) do not work well when the patient is receiving opioids at the same time. 7) If a patient says they are taking opioids for fibromyalgia, I would still suggest to lower the dose very slowly, maybe 2-5% of the total dose every month, and keep doing this until the total dose is very low. If we try to eliminate the opioid too quickly the body will feel withdrawal and the patient will not want to continue tapering the dose down. Despite all these reasons, there are still too many patients with fibromyalgia taking opioids.

I have a life because of Ultram and lunesta . I have been on Ultram for 16 yes. I’m 60 yr old and active with family’s and gardening. I was home bound and had no life before. I do have to pace myself and rest a lot... and I am still in pain but I have a much better life than I had at 40.

Shelly I agree with you, I take Tramacet which is a Tramadol and paracetamol mix. Without it I can't function at all as my pain levels are excruciating, I've tried stronger Tramadol on it's own along with slow release and it doesn't help me at all. My GP is continually trying to get me off it but still the Tramacet is the only thing that helps. I actually put off going anywhere near the doctors now because of this even when I really need to see him as I know it will be mentioned now and it causes me so much anxiety. I hope you find something that works for you and you get the medical support you need xx

This video is so great! I love that you make me feel like the pain is real, unlike a lot of videos where they kind of talk down to you. I don’t have a fibro diagnosis yet but I have had chronic pain for many years. Just waiting for a rheumatologist to see me. Do you think there is anything I can do in the mean time? I would love to find a pain clinic but I fear a lot of them are not well versed in fibromyalgia

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome years ago. I suffered daily for 6 years, but cured it within 2 weeks after discovering the cause of my symptoms. After researching possible causes, I came across information about aspartame and MSG. I eliminated them both from my diet, which isn't always easy with MSG, since it's hidden in so many things and often not named in the ingredients although it is found in the listed ingredients as a component. After only two weeks of my new diet, ALL my symptoms disappeared, and I was back to my old self. This may not be the answer for everyone, but everyone should start there.

Aspartame defiantly caused me pain, I was addicted to Diet Coke and Pepsi max. I haven’t thought much about MSG it’s a thought though. I’m also celiac ,so my diet is restricted. I hear gut health is very important, who knows I’m ready to try anything.
