The low birth- and marriage rates would suggest that the Japanese have given up on love. That assumption could not be further from the truth. Many Japanese are indeed searching for that special someone, just not the conventional kind. Despite Japan still lagging behind on LGBT+ rights-same-sex weddings are still illegal-the country has become a laboratory for new types of relationships: digital, solitary or even devoid of sex. Could it be a model for the future? Our reporters Alexis Brégère and Mélodie Sforza went to find out.

it's the career chasing, money chasing lifestyle. Phone addictions are a by-product of fast-paced consumerism and mass entertainment.

Spending 1/3 of her income in one evening for fake "flattery", I guess flattery is very important to these women. More importantly, their complete lack of financial discipline is astonishing..

Dating is tough for people who aren't extremely social. And the Internet is specifically tailored to keep people in a loop. Instead of helping them develop in life.

Always remember, Japan is simply 15-20 years ahead of the West...

Really now. How is dating a computer woman "ahead" of a country. In fact, they are going "backward" not ahead because they are losing in population growth. All that so-called computer is not helping Japan and is downright not good on any level in the quality of life overall.

I am Japanese. 🇯🇵 Even though Japanese people live in a difficult society, they don't start riots or hurt others. Also, I understand that loneliness does not mean being alone, but rather being isolated in a group.

The Japanese are too rich for their own sake. This would never happen in Myanmar, even if they wanted to.

12:08 This statement makes the most sense. Especially since Japan has always had really large companies. There's no swiping or algorithms. Every young adult that's single is put into one room. And told to do something that doesn't involve internet use. Just like how dating works in High School.

I can understand thinking that dating or trying to get into a relationship is a hassle, but I don't think these kind of things are the solution.

I am also a huge otome romance game and spent most of my salary on it. My real life human boyfriend feels nothing more than a friend but i feel true love to these fictional characters instead. I know my human bf doesn't really like it but he eventually got used to it 🙃

I love the Japanese. And I almost moved to Japan! But I would really love to see long term psychological study done on what made them so strange. At the deficit of their population. I have a very close Japanese friend and we still have no idea is he asexual? or? Kind, quiet and voyeuristic. But stereotypical of the younger generation. I think they describe him as a salad eater. But I’d really like to know what the Japanese society and government did to the last however many generations to create such an unnatural bizarre phenomenon. Was it simply just hyper economics? That everything is commoditized there.?

It’s in countries where they overuse honor, and conformity as a form of governing. Shame-based system is really corrosive to the souls and bodies

I didn't understand anything at all, but if he tries to blame the LGBT because Japanese men and women cannot produce, I call that excuses and in bad taste.😤🏳‍🌈

This is only taking a samples of extreme cases. increasing number of single Japanese people are not into romance or relationships itself. This is heavily due to the gender gap between men and women being so wide. and if you report about host clubs in Japan you should be looking into their sick business model, so many young women who cannot pay the debt is forced into prostitution.
