just bought a 3ft one in a 10in grow pot for $7.50 from my local grocery store- steal!! this has been a wishlist plant for me :)

I got one of these as my first plant in the late 90's! Since I was a kid, I probably didn't care for it properly. Still survived, but one of the 3 stems died. When I went to re-pot it about a decade later (oops) it had developed some *huge* roots under the surface of the soil, which shocked me! I brought it up a little higher to display them and now the roots are the major attraction for my plant :D

Why do you cut the roots back? Never mind- you just explained. Never knew it would stimulate root growth.
