Vinny Chirayil - Apartnent Bonsai

Күн бұрын

My first root fusion project is onto a good start & has grown vigorously in the last 1.5 months. This video shows defoliation and spreading of the branches for better light penetration, to help the new & tender branches to grow stronger. Everyday, i rotated the pot so that all sides get good growth.

Hi Vinny, I was looking for updates from you... but... I guess I'll have to settle for this video that I already watched! Actually, I was wondering if you could answer this question I have about Ficus religiosa roots: if I plant an F. religiosa near the bottom of a pot, but bury it fairly deeply (i.e. the trunk base is buried), will the roots start growing upward into the dirt? Thanks if you see this!

I have seen that happen with ficus Virens/racemosa. my feeling is that most tree roots will fully utilize the growing medium eventually, if they are well draining. my fused root cutting is doing fine. i don't know when i will resume video uploads :-)

usually bonsai artists want the roots to be on top layer. may i know what you are trying to achieve by burying it deep ?

@@VinnyChirayil - Nice to hear from you, Vinny! Hope that you continue with your videos, even if at an indeterminate date. Maybe I could send you some seeds from Canada not available in India? Thanks for your answer and help! The reason I asked is because I'm going to give a Ficus religiosa to my aunt who is Buddhist, so I transplanted one into a fairly small pot (for its size) and I trimmed the massively long roots, but since the top was so large in comparison to the new root size, I had to bury it near the bottom of the pot for stability!

@@treelife365 ... "... I had to bury it near the bottom of the pot for stability" - Thats not a problem. Just tell your aunt not to plant the tree in ground near any buildings. Even the pot should have tray beneath it. If roots escape to ground, they are hard to kill & can damage even concrete buildings / foundations, if ignored. Nigel Saunders is a ficus & bonsai expert in Canada itself. He will be happy to guide you, keeping your cold weather in mind.

@@treelife365 ... "Maybe I could send you some seeds from Canada not available in India ?" Thanks so much for the offer. I am happy that you thought of it. Thats enough for me :-) At present my interest & time committment for bonsai is unpredictable. Besides, i no longer touch seeds & regular cuttings. Now i recommend only 3 ways of getting specimens, to amateur bonsai artists, including myself - 1) collecting from nature/urban areas 2) air layered cuttings 3) as a last resort, buy plants from nursery.

Apartment Bonsai by Vinny Chirayil Thanks got your prompt reply! I had a very long single skinny trunk Ficus Religiosa, only 4 leaves at the tip of the tiny trunk. What should I do with it? My plan is to turn it into a bonsai. Appreciate if you can give me some guidance!
