I've pulled off a board from the shop wall which splits the shop in two. It's quarter inch thick, five inches wide and nine foot four inches (112 inches) long. During my watching your video, my mindful wheels started to turn. My watching your videos is starting to turn like, for a car battery with "cold cranking amps"...my locomotivation over, from a dead stop. Two short cabinate hunged doors just got screwed into the inside of a seven foot-four inch window frame, both doors swung away from the window in parallel and holding up that first board. I've started! Thank you! John BC, Canada

Hi there Charlie, from one ex-Navy greenie helo-maintainer (RNZN-Wasp) to another and a fellow railway modeller, having followed your sessions from # 61, 113 is close to being the most radical and enlightening. The rest are great of course, this one is just another step up from those so I look forward to seeing the next few clips and watching the layout really take on operational potential now that you've moved on from the tail-chaser concept (which is still ok!). Thanks for the time and energy you spend in putting the clips together, I enjoy sharing your journey and long live the modular concept... Stay safe and well, Best Regards Brent

As someone who was railway modelling long before anyone had even dreamed of them, I find those laser cutting machines fascinating. All those years cursing blunt jigsaw blades, and now you just put a sheet of plywood in the machine, and out comes something perfect first time! That was a great video Charlie ! As you said, something a bit different ! Nice to see James too. I visited James about three weeks ago on my way back from holiday in Cornwall, shame you hadn’t made this video before my visit, I spent about five minutes driving around that industrial estate and ended up phoning James before I found him ! I’d gone down primarily to pick up my helix, again a bespoke production to suit my needs. This really is a game changer for getting things like a helix produced - like you Charlie, my woodworking skills are, shall we say..... questionable ? When I found out that James and his team could produce such a great quality product at such an affordable price, it was a no brainer and I placed my order. I was able to create my design in AnyRail 6 and e-mail it to James - so easy ! I look forward to seeing your next video and how you get on with the construction. I’m not ready to start mine yet as I have a bit more railway to build first. So I’m very pleased that you can take on the role of guinea pig 😁 I’ll learn by your mistakes..... 🤣 I’m going to use DCC Concepts track bed and there will be up and down 00 tracks and a reversible 009 track on the inside. Gradient works out at about 3% and the out track climbs as you mentioned Charlie. I’m going to divide the tracks on my four stage helix into one block with two feedback detectors per level as it will be managed through iTrain - another product supplied by James at DCC Train Automation. I may also consider installing DCC Concepts Power Base on the up and reversible tracks on the helix for added traction for any trains that have an issue with the gradient. Well, enough from me ! Cheers Charlie and James 👍

I am finding these track plan programmes quite useful as I am about to move my 'duck under' layout from a 9ft x 9ft bedroom into a converted 10m x 5m barn. My problem is arthritis of the back so I shall incorporate at lift out section, I'll also be building it in sections that will fit in the back of a Sprinter size van so that if I ever move I can easily dismantle and transport my layout. I've just seen a friend of mine have to destroy his layout which he started about 20 years ago when he retired early and constructed it with no intention of moving. Good luck with the rebuilding.

Hi Charlie. Great video as always. That looks like an adventurous track upgrade. I hope it all goes to plan and I can't wait to see the end result. I would possibly swap the radiator for a low level one. If the base of the layout is not too close to the top of the radiator, you could cut a piece of aluminium and form a curve in it to make a heat deflector and fix behind the rad prior to fitting of baseboards. You don't want to attract any dampness issues. Hope all goes well. Stay safe and well. Cheers Chris.

Hmm - 113 episodes in and Charlie has, um, well a beautiful viaduct, one and a half hills, and a couple of open ended tracks. Oh boy! Hopefully you can (still) do some basic shunting mate? But it's been a brilliant journey so far and suddenly it looks like progress is really being made. The new layout looks amazing and it's going to be great fun watching it come together. But -but - but - all that work coming undone, all that soldering, fitting of point motors, the incomprehensible (to mere mortals) DCC special components, miles and miles of wiring, ouch. Well that has been part of the learning process. Charlie, all I can say is I admire your resolve and determination to get it right. All the very best of luck, and thanks so much for sharing it all, and with such great skill and good humour.

Charlie, what an interesting video. Love the English countryside so lush and green. Back to modelling, I so wish I could contribute by way of providing ideas which would assist you in creating what you are setting out to achieve on your layout. My layout is what some would call a dog-bone design which allows me to walk into my train room without the duck-under which I previously had, so as sail into my 80`s there is no banging my head anymore. I may have mentioned before that my layout is a single level design, so to avoid a boring flat layout I have created mountains and hillside cuttings etc., I greatly admire those modelers who have the skills to create multi-level layouts which you are setting out to achieve. The fact that you sought assistance with the helix shows your desire to achieve the perfect outcome is to be commended. I will follow with great interest the changes you have made along with the instillation of the helix, Stay safe and cheers from Australia Greg

Hi Charlie, A very interesting video. I have been looking at a very similar idea for my own layout, and was looking at Hatton’s new baseboards, with as yet unidentified helix manufacturers. Having seen your friend James at work I may be going there. I really liked that hillside you just removed, that you had only built a few months ago, so was watching the first part of your video in horror. It was almost like watching that film of that mountaineer who got stuck between two rocks and cut his own arm off. I watched from behind the settee! I can’t wait to see the next episode. Regards, Jim

Hi Charlie, What’s the retail cost of your helixes? What the great unwashed need to pay, that is. Regards, Jim
@ChadwickModelRailway4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, a word of caution with helices. Be very careful of the plywood thickness. birch ply has the advantage of lightness. Don’t even look at MDF. Once you’ve sorted out how many turns you need, give James a call. I will go in to prices, once complete.

Excellent video Charlie, quality camera work, and felt as if we were all there with you watching the laser cutter at work... Only negative I can think of was its too short :) - would love to have seen more. - Don't put yourself down regarding your DIY skills... however best leave the radiator move to a plumber !!

Thanks for showing some of your work removing the section of your layout. It is quite instructive to see some of the less glamorous tasks being done. I have just finished the primary track laying steps on my small Inglenook Sidings layout (US Midwest circa 1962 version) and am now facing the tedious work of rail and tie painting, then ballasting. No problems, but in retrospect I wish I'd used the "rubber" adhesive you did for gluing down the track, just in case. By the way, the Peco Code 75 track and points I used are quite nice. Cheers from Wisconsin.

Interesting video Charlie what a lot of work, but I'm sure it will be well worth it. Watching that chap building the baseboard ready for the helix was amazing, your filming of your journey was good as normal I was intrigued how you got the outside shots of your car enroute. Anyway I jest. This whole build will look great. Well done you love following your progress (oh you've just said with a bit of drone footage thrown in so that answers that.) You and your family stay safe in these changing times see you on the next one Eddy xx

Cool footage Charlie, your helix must come close to Joey Ricard’s lightest helix of the world. Am very sure the 3 millimeter ply will prove an excellent and sturdy base. Thanks for sharing.

No Vincent, it’s 12mm ply base.

Charlie, You can already tell that the Helix will be a thing of beauty. Possibly to nice to hide. The Laser cutter, we're starting to see very small cutter's enter the market. About 12" x 12" to pre-cut model buildings etc. For the home hobbyist. Being used by the Home Doll's House modellers. These cutters are starting to be looked at by railway modellers. Some articles on how to convert designs into a program for the cutter to use are starting to appear in hobby mags and on line. You can cut window frames with sash bars complete. On a brick building you can set the laser just to cut " bricks" on the surface of the thin ply sheet. then the laser comes back at full cutting depth to cut out the individual parts. As well as house's we're starting to see large building's and warehouse's being laser cut. Didn't the old T.V. add say" Oh,the folks come up from Somerset where the Cider apples grow"? Cheers, Chris Perry.

Fascinating video, I was especially interested in the laser cutting part. I'm going to have to tackle a helix for my layout before too long as well and so you can understand why I was extremely interested in watching this particular video. Hi Charlie. Another interesting clip. If you want to have go at correcting your 3D diagram. Go to each track junction, right click, and select a Set Height using the top of your incline as zero and then typing in a minus sign and the set height for each point. Probably easier to start by printing off a plan and writing the anticipated height at each junction. You just keep subtracting say 20mm every metre or proportion per length of set track until you get down to -18” (-450mm). It is tedious but does work. Cheers Peter.

Thanks Peter, but I’ve cheated by sending it back to its original creator. Regards Charlie

Brilliant work and delivery Charlie. One of the best (if not, THE best) model railway youtubers. I have had a single and double helix for around 10 years on my layout. One of the best space saving designs ever. I tried a traverser once. Never again !!!! Keep up the great work.

@@ChadwickModelRailway Only difference i have is, on the double helix, my inner line is hornby/peco/jouef 4th radius, but i used flexi on the outer. That gave my a 5ft (ish) radius just to give even less stress on the trains. I have 4 1/2 revolutions to raise the line 16 inches and I can run a 9 coach train with a Kernow SR 10201 up, and there is so little reduction in speed, you would hardly notice.
