Fiddler's Green is not an Irish song. Nor is it particularly old, having been written in 1966 by John Conolly, an Englishman. It is a sailor's song and, if anywhere, is about the fishing port of Grimsby on the east coast of England. However, this fine piece of verse shares nothing but the title with that song. Having spent 18 years in the UK military I applaud the sentiment and salute all members of the US military, present and past, living and passed, for all the years we have served side by side. God Save the King, God Bless America!

I suppose I heard an Irish band singing it! The "legend" of where old sailors go comes from the early 1800s and all that. No idea why the US Cav wrote their poem in 1923... but there is the "stereotype" of a lot of Irishmen in the Cav. I was 19D for quite awhile, a great MOS, but will always be airborne infantry in my 27x years and a few wars. Have trained with the Brits - Para Regt, RAF Regt, & drank a lot of beer with them. Introduced them to JD@@chriscarter5720

Way back in the early 1980s I named my mare’s new colt Fiddler’s Green. All I knew was that it was where the Cavalry stopped on the road to hell and nothing else. But since I had inherited an 1890s US Cavalry saddle (most uncomfortable damn thing ever put between man and horse) only the year before it seemed kind of a cool idea. Seeing who uploaded this allowing me to learn where it came from is part of that story now. Our farm was down on the Brandywine River not too far from West Chester. So the PA Guard has helped me find out the origin of my PA horse’s name.

The last stanza is very reminiscent of the last verse of Kipling's 'The Young British Soldier' "When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains, and the women come out to cut up what remains, jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains and go to your gawd like a soldier." I'm guessing Kipling was inspired by that story as it dates to the around the late 1600s in Ireland and clearly the author of this was inspired by that too, or perhaps by Kipling? Who knows.

Though the heat was heavy overhead, we fought till nearly all were dead, From Setlej Lake to Khyber and from there to Kandahar. And those Indians were a savage lot, they gave it to us hard and hot, And I lost both legs to cannon-shot, I sighed for Mullingar. As on the bloody ground I lay, in deep despair, I could not pray, I cursed the day I 'listed and my joy in life did mar. When someone near me gave a shout, I woke right up and looked about. Thank God, I was only dreaming, I was back in Mullingar. From the Irish song : The Mullingar Recruit

Sorry Bubba, fiddlers green is for Sailors Fiddler's Green is an after-life where there is perpetual mirth, a fiddle that never stops playing, and dancers who never tire. In 19th-century English maritime folklore, it was a kind of after-life for sailors who had served at least fifty years at sea.

Although the Dubliners and Clancy Brothers-and many others have recorded and performed "Fiddlers Green", its neither Irish or traditional. It was written in the 60's by John Connolly, a songwriter and "fisheries folklorist" from Grimsby, Lincolnshire. (I tend to think that Tim Hart's and Mandy Prior's version is by far the best)
