In my last fidget spinner video, there were dozens of comments suggesting that magnets and fidget spinners could somehow generate energy. Infact, those comments were right! In this video, I demonstrate how you can use fidget spinners to generate electricity through the principles of electromagnetism. We can demonstrate the idea of a fidget spinner free* energy generator! This is one of the cooler fidget spinner hacks!
You can buy some parts and try it yourself! (Affiliate link)
Parts: amzn.to/2A1JMS7
I use fidget spinners as make-shift rotors. Some coils of wire (solenoids) were mounted through the holes of the fidget spinner, and the nuts/bolts that hold the coil in place act as a great core for the solenoid. When the fidget spinner rotates, a magnet is brought close to the coils, and a current is induced in the wire. Because there are LEDS soldered in the coil circuits, the current passes through the LEDs and lights them up. This demonstrates that you can produce energy with fidget spinners! With some rectification, you could store this energy in a large capacitor or battery to use the energy over a period of time, instead of instantaneously.
This whole idea works on the idea of electromagnetism. If you're interested in reading further, look into electromagnets. The basic gist is that if a current flows through a wire, it induces a magnetic field around the wire. BUT, this also works in reverse, if you have a magnetic field (magnet) around a wire, it will induce a current through the wire (current)! This is how moving the magnet toward the fidget spinner coil produces energy.
*Note, energy is never "free" because of thermodynamics which is pretty lame (so far anyway). But it is free in terms of $$$.

Guys, just to clear things up. This is *not* perpetual motion or energy. 1) He used energy to start the motion, which is against perpetual motion. 2) perpetual motion had already been physically proven impossible. 3) there is always going to be an outside force acting on the spinners. The air resistance will slow it to a stop eventually Which is why this isn't perpetual motion, or free energy, because your are using energy to make that energy. One more thing, the energy is "free" as he isn't paying to give energy to spin the spinners, which will power the LED. But don't get that mixed up with perpetual motion, as it is physically impossible.

Look. You're an Aussie like me mate and I respect that your video is really fascinating, its a brilliant concept and I love the execution. However from the things that you mentioned in your video I can deduce that you either studied physics or you know the basic concepts. Currently I am a year 12 Physics student and we are learning about electromagnetism in motors and generators. The first thing we learn is that when a current carrying conductor carrying current in a magnetic field is set into motion, an electric field is produced coupled with an opposing magnetic field. The second thing we learn is that the conductor cannot move forever and is actually slowed down by the opposing magnetic field. (See: Magnetic Braking) Lenz's law states that the opposing magnetic field must affect the current carrying conductor in an opposing manner, a fancy way of saying that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. All forces in this experiment are balanced and air resistance plays a key role as well as friction in the bearings. When you consider that the bearings are creating heat due to friction and sound also due to friction you realise that the forces are balancing themselves out. This system is not producing any more energy than you're putting into it. However as I said originally this idea is brilliant and the way you demonstrated this concept is amazing but please do not get ahead of yourself and assume energy is being produced.

You are correct, but failed to mention that there are two types of energy: Kinetic Energy and Potential Energy. Magnets hold an extreme amount of potential energy. It is possible to harness the potential energy from a magnet and turn it into kinetic energy to produce electricity using the magnets themselves as the engine to turn a turbine shaft. Obviously the magnet arrangement and force would have to be higher than the turbine in order to produce kinetic energy.

Almost. What slows it down isn't actually the friction (which, given the purpose of a fidget spinner, is minimal), it's the energy required to power the LEDs. The spinners in this video slow down a lot quicker than the (presumably identical, if not the same) spinners in the last, because the 'generator' harnesses their kinetic energy (slowing them down) in order to power the bulbs.

The potential difference created from the coil inductance reduces inertia because of equal opposite flux. It is quite literally the opposing magnetic fields by the magnets and the electromagnet created temporarily in the coil. The potential difference of the coil(s) will always be less than that which created it. Ohm's law. Research it.

Of course, you can't create real "free" energy, because thermodynamics sort of gets in the way. But, for example, you can get wind to spin the spinner to create energy. This is free in terms of $$$. I define "Free energy" as converting energy that isn't ours into energy that's ours. This just demos that if you replace my finger with something from Earth, you get free energy ;)

.. but it's not even 'free" energy in terms of $$$ because you have to pay for the food you eat that powers your hands, which in turn power the spinner. It is just a highly efficient way to produce very small amounts of energy with no particularly useful application beyond what a traditional turbine would be used for. Fun to watch though.

Nice work!! I was building a similar stacked 2 disk setup two years ago, using large ring magnets and 9" disks. I was able to observe an actual speed up of the system. No coils. I did experiments in both high speeds and low. At high speeds, a force potential can be caused to form an echo like effect where one magnet disk would kick the other in rapid succession. Or in other configurations it builds up and releases, self powering, through magnetic kick. I also worked with some one disk with a smaller rotor configs that showed these things as well.

This may be off topic but I think some one might find it interesting :) I have an idea for a lifting force machine. Step 1: Get hollowed out cube. Step 2: Securely attach magnet to inner bottom of hollowed out cube. Step 3: Place a lever on inside bottom of cube behind the magnet that's securely attached to inside bottom of cube so that one side of the lever is pointing towards you and hanging over the magnet. Step 4: Attach a vertical bar to the top side of the part of the lever that is not hanging over magnet witch is securely attached to inner bottom of cube. Make sure the bar goes all the way up to the inner top of the cube barley touching it. Step 5: Securely attach a magnet to the side of the lever that is hanging over the magnet that is attached to the inner bottom of cube. Note: Magnets need to be facing each other with attracting poles N,S or S,N Note: The lever is going to have to be really close to the magnet on inner bottom of cube because of how close those magnetic fields need to be to interact. But not so close that magnets can touch. The magnet on top connected to lever is pulling the magnet on inner bottom of cube towards it and since the magnet on inner bottom of cube is connected to cube, this pulling force acts as a lifting force. Now at the same time the magnet on inner bottom of cube is pulling the magnet on top downwards BUT the magnet on top is connected to the lever so any downwards pulling force is being converted mechanically by the lever into upwards lifting force. Now if you know anything about magnets you now that there are magnets powerfull enough to lift far more weight then just there own. So essentialy this divice is exploiting the powerfull pulling force of magnets by mechanicaly transforming its magnetic pulling force into mechanical lifting force through the clever utilization of a lever, and walla stuff can be made to fly. Imagine if the magnets in this experiment where electro magnets so the ammount of electrical current going into them determined the ammount of lifting force that it would have. Now imagine this system being used as an attachment that could be placed under or ontop of vehicles to counter the weight of the vehicle and any cargo its carying. Now imagine if this was done with powerfull permanent magnets and turned sideways and placed in an electric generator and had enough strength to pass through the magnetic fields as it propelled itself forwards with its own magnetic pulling force. Signed AMA

Just as a test, hit the bolts with the magnet (While the coil is on it), and the LEDs should light up or flash, if they don't, turn the magnet the other way around and try again. So while the coil is on and connected to the LED, just tap the end of the bolt. Otherwise, you have to spin it pretty fast and get the magnets quite close. Are they neodymium magnets you bought? You can email me at ibuynewstuff@gmail.com and I can try help some more.

There has to be fast movement while you do it -> the current is induced from a rapidly changing field. So hit the bolt fast or bring the magnet close to the bolt fast. Also try in a dark room to test.

So it's like a arc reactor. So in the whole time the iron man's arc reactor actually works with the help of a fidget spinner not palladian

How about reversing this, make an induction glove, and place it at the bottom of the thumb. (Palm side) Add a battery pack on the back of the hand, use normally, and voila! OH, btw you want to add a USB port for charging.

People puts energy into something, gets a fraction of it back, they call it "free energy"

But if you let the magnets spin the spinner and then from the top add a magnet that light it up you will make free energy

im assuming since i dont have fidget spinners or super strong magnets that putting the magnets so they're not attracted wouldnt do anything to help them spin like they keep rejecting each other and move away so they keep spinning...? that was worded horribly sorry.
@maulerrw

the trick there is they dont "keep repelling" they simply move to where the forces are balanced. if you have two spinners with magnets on them like he shows, what will happen is theyll repel each other so they spin to where the magnets are furthest apart, but the next magnet will try and push it back the other way then so itll find the middle point and want to stay there. Itd work much like when theyre attracting in other words.

I guess we're ditching Nuclear fusion and now sticking with electromagnetic fidget spinners for our energy source.

A better design would have been to make the fidget spinner have magnets resisting each other and then putting the magnet and rapping wire around it to have ti so its self powered

Of course, its a very limited source of energy and it is not free energy as of Perpetual Energy, which is a myth. Its just a cool way to learn how electromagnetism works.

This seems almost dumb... but imagine this integrated on every Bollard on the streets of a city (where we used to experience airstreams by design) The amount gathered could be substantial... we used to imagine "bigger things" instead small things that could help our lives.
