I got to experience direct fire one night (actually two nights). We got a ground attack at the LZ we were pulling green line defense. Our bunker was close to the artillery pit. The main attack was roughly 90 degrees to the left of our position so we weren't really involved in the fight. The closest gun was doing direct fire, almost shooting right over us. I guess they had timed fuses. The coolest thing was, they were only shooting Willy Pete. So about a hundred yards out the shells exploded, lighting up the area and sending burning phosphorus out in every direction. They were firing about 3-4 round per minute. That was obviously why the attack was not on our side of the LZ. But I want to shout out to all artillery guys. You saved more lives than you can know. The accuracy, dependability, and responsiveness was a god-send to us grunts. I just can never thank you guys enough.

"I'm not sure where this is, but i was a commo guy with A/1/487 Artillery BN (Alpha Battery). We were in PTA with the emm one oh deuces (M102, 105MM), doing arty missions. Later on before the end of the ftx, we did direct fire, which i thought was pretty cool. This was back n the early 90's. The gun bunnies asked some of us 'ash and trash' guys to help pound in the stakes. The stakes for direct fire are 3 foot long, versus regular indirect fire is 1.5 ft. They thought we couldn't do it, but i grew up in Montana, and chopped wood all my high school years. I put one stake 1/2 in, and they said it was enough." "Sorry, also direct fire is full charge, charge 6 or 7."

@Joakim von Anka we had a security alert in my ship once & the Augmentation Force, everyone onboard-in the duty section or not joins the fight- was called away. The Quarterdeck Messenger apparently was a fan of that new(1987) WWE b/c after properly calling "Away the Augmentation Force away!", he added," Let's get ready to rummmmmmbllllllllle!" The ship's XO was known to be a dick but he never said a word. Everyone responded properly & with whatever we could grab. If that happens, the ship's crew might not stand a chance but any forcible boarders are gonna limp away from it.

I was in Headquarters Battery 1st Battalion 12th Marines in Desert Storm, we actually had a battery that had to engage tanks by direct fire because the TOW gunners that where their support was too busy to get over to help them. From what a buddy of mine who was in their Fire Direction Center described they where dancing around and hooting and hollering and having a lot fun just like these soldiers are doing. The battery commander was a mustang who served in Vietnam and was said to have told the command post when he was informed his Tows were on the way, "Screw it my boys are having too much fun and we'll be done with them by the time you get here."

SoKy Outdoors, When I first joined my unit (1999) there was a full-screw (British Army slang for Cpl/Bdr) was in the first gulf war part of the Highland Gunners 19 Regiment Royal Artillery. Said they had to go fire direct role on Iraqi armour. That had some how managed to make it to there position. There’s also the story of the dragon gun in Afghanistan when 29 Commando Royal Artillery man handled a 105 gun up a mountain to direct fire it onto the talban

bigjohn697791 yeah a common trend for soldiers in desperate times is to engineer something daring and somehow manage to pull a victory out of something that would have been extremely gruesome for both sides. The guns might be nice but the soldier is the one who determines how to effectively use them and I’m sure there were some putting them through the extremes. :)

600 meters direct front you'd be dead. Gunner, Cansiter, Up Frire, On the Way, Boom ,your dead. It's fun to watch,but the range just south east from the billets at Graf. Our unit was pick for range detail and the first detail was to police the field on this range, so we lined up and st rated look for anything that wasn't natural or biodegradable. This like any other detail until we noticed the 109s were set up in the wood line. They were complete with their support vehicles came netting the works. The real clue was the crates of 155 rounds along with the range officer double timing to our location screaming ceasefire ,ceasefire. We were on a live fire range. They all had red flags flying and had we not been seen by the range officer we'd all been dead. The blast from the guns would rocked our world. Glad that range officer saw us

Hey Mike, since you are an artillery guy I want to ask this about the video. Those M119 field howitzers dont seem to have the tail assembly opened up for fire. Is that normal for direct fire practice? Also I noticed that even with the platform that the guns were secured to, the gun moves back a significant amount. Is that how it usually is with those types of guns or is it because they were firing in direct fire mode that the whole gun slid back more than what I would expect an accurate artilery piece to move?
@stevewilson7819
@stevewilson7819 4 жыл бұрын
Luke Troftgruben The M119 is not a split trail weapon like the WWII M101A1. It’s more like the M102. It has the base plate you see it setting on. It has a single spade at the rear. Normally you want that spade dug into s trench about a foot deep.
@stevewilson7819
@stevewilson7819 4 жыл бұрын
The M119 is not a split trail weapon like the old M101. It sets up on the baseplate. It has a single spade in the rear. And the spade is supposed to be dug into a trench about a foot deep. One reason there is so much recoil is because they are shooting a full charge of powder, which is normal for direct fire missions. The guns all shift from recoil. That can be due to the powder charge being used, the angle of fire, and how hard the ground is, and how deep the spades are dug in.

Wow it's amazing how that 105mm M777 you have to constantly Jump in and out of that rail ! The M102 105mm had a Wider platform the Loader loads the round and takes the Lanyard pulls it Barrel recoils but he's far enough where the recoil never hits him ! But this JEEZ'US jumping in and out of those Rails that insane Especially as fast as you can shoot that thing I guarantee you someone has Face planted over that rail !! 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦‍♀️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦‍♀️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 ** Well the 2nd Group firing was doing it the right way !! I thought something was wrong with that !

The M777 is a 155 mm towed howitzer. The ones in the movie are M119’s which are 105’s, and the M109 Paladin 155mm self propelled howitzers.

Correct tool for the correct job direct fire at afvs should be left to a bit of kit we had in 3 para, L6- W.O.M.B.A.T this fired a 120 mm hesh round ,a beast of a weapon loudest bang in the British Army and a near miss would kill the crew with concussion
