Hats off to SG for committing to a test like this - shows an incredible amount of confidence in their gear, and I’ve got to believe these operators are now huge advocates as well. If Special Operations Command decides they want SG gear, is that going to limit civilian supply? I’m starting to feel like this off-season might have just gotten more expensive for me... haha

@Stone Glacier thank you for carrying out these test on your gear, its great to see. what is the proposed life span of this down treatment? other down treatments Ive seen generally dont last long in the field. I think it would also be a more realistic test to test the down while it is actually wet. That is a scenario where I have personally found myself in, and one that is far more dangerous. ie when a shelter fails during a storm and all gear is wetted out, and continues to be wet for some time.

In a cold weather water accident, would you not have been wearing the puffy jacket when you went into the water? I would be curious to see the same scenario with a wet puffy jacket. Also, if your wearing a waterproof jacket as an outer shell do you recommend taking it off before getting in the bag?

If you fall in water you're probably moving. If you're moving you're probably not wearing a puffy. Unless its balls cold and you don't mind replacing the jacket from getting snagged and wear from shoulder straps/hip belt. Remove outer WP/ hardshell or you will have the same issues as the female with the wp pants.

@@fantom_309 Exactly. If you're being active (hiking, skiing, climbing, etc) you are NOT wearing your down/warming layer. That is for when you stop for a break or at days end to keep you warm when you are not active.

Hey boating up a river in October in a place like Alaska, you're going to be wearing a puffy jacket and able to fall in water. You probably have a life vest on as well.

The kifaru LLP is amazing. The Grumman puffy looks good too but the llp is hard to beat

this was informative, and somewhat strange, if not in freezing wind, you should take off your clothing and wrench the water out by squeezing, its far easier to squeeze the water by hand than vaporize it with body heat, then you should wear dry clothing and hunker down and drink something warm. this is what i was thought in mountaineer training in army, and those guy regularly rescue people in +7000 feet peaks. im just asking, correct me if im wrong

I thought it insane that they put the puffy on top of the wet clothes. I would do the same as you said to put on some dry clothes first. The guy also said at around 5:20 to not to take off the clothes because they won’t dry from the cold. I just don’t know how putting the down on to wet clothing doesn’t ruin it’s insulation properties

I would have loved to participate in this! Killer test. I have two questions. Which bag did you all use for this test and the over night camp at 9d. The Chilkoot 15d or 0d? Second is after the test from one week to months out how did the down sleeping bags, jackets, and pants hold up as in durability. I know some down has had negative affects even after it drys out. Not saying yours would, just curious on how those specific ones did after all that moisture in long term. Great video, thanks!

Our guys used a 15 degree and also a 0 degree. The zero worked in this situation better as it allowed for more internal heat to build up and assist in moisture movement through the system. I'm not sure what bag the operators used that night. We haven't seen any negative long term effects on the down garments. We use a very high quality down and as long as it is used properly it should last a very, very long time.

I am very curious as to what the operators were wearing instead of merino. They seem to have dried much faster. I wear merino base layers because I was under the impression that they are best for temperature regulation and odor management. Did they tell you what material they were running? I only heard the guy state is was a super thin wicking base.

Merino is a great base layer. Like anything it has pros and cons and there is no one best solution. The other operators were wearing a thin synthetic base layer which will dry faster. It won't be as warm when wet and will stink much faster. Again there's a place and a time for both!

What's the longevity of the Hyper-Dry treatment? Does it wear off over time? Can you launder the bag with no mal effects? Can it be re-applied somehow? My concern would be that it works great out of the box but then 1 or 2yrs later you're sitting on Kodiak island in a multi-day rainstorm and the Hyper-Dry has lost it's majority effectiveness and hyperthermia rolls in.

The treatment should remain for the life of the actual down fiber itself. So you're more at the mercy of breaking down the actual down fibers. You could not re-apply as you would need to remove the down which would be require tearing the bag apart. We also don't recommend washing the bag unless absolutely necessary. We recommend washing the face fabric by hand if needed. If you want to call the shop we'd be happy to answer more of your questions!

@@stoneglacier9636 thanks for the reply! This was a brutal test but also very much a real world scenario. Corey Jacobsen encountered this while elk hunting in Alaska last fall and I see the same possibility here in coastal BC, not falling in a river but simply days of rain and constant wetness. This video alone has me sold and while it may not always be life or death the added comfort is always appreciated. I'll definitely be looking to Stone Glacier for my next sleeping bag.
