Not that it changes the story much, but the picture you posted about the Michigan Hockey rink was of the current one that is Yost Ice Area, which was Yost Field House you mentioned up until 1973. Fielding Yost was the AD when the Coliseum was built in 1920 and had artificial ice installed in 1925- this was the home for the hockey team 1920-1973. (as a side note, Yost Ice Arena is the 2nd oldest building used for college hockey- which is Northeastern's Matthews Arena, which has hosted college hockey since 1910) Great video.

Fielding H.Yost: - Most shutouts in a career. - tied with Saban with most National Championships at 1 school :6 - 10 Big Ten championships ( Saban in 5 years in Big 10 had zero .Saban also had a losing record vs. legendary Michigan coach Lloyd Carr while Saban was at Michigan State U during his Big 10 years) - Yost had a whopping 56 consecutive game unbeaten streak, the longest vs.competition that did not include any high school competition. ( 2nd longest to the 57 streak by Washington that did include high schools) . - Yost's prolific' Point a Minute' Offensive Jaugernauts led to UM having the highest " Delta" ; the gap between points scored vs points given up. - Even his Special Teams were excellent; so much so that he wrote a book on it and was the 1st coach to comprehend and implement punting as an actual offensive strategy to gain ultimate superior field position. - He invented the position of middle LB , the current 1 man in motion before the center hike, the no huddle offense , and was a pioneer in the forward pass. - Yost was a wealthy lawyer business person , and author. He was also a devout Christian. He did not smoke or take drugs . He was NOT a bigot. In fact, he was ahead of the rest of America on the race issue in many ways - contrary to the (Un) " woke" lies of jealous and unscholarly critics. Proof: One time ,in a NORTHERN hotel where Michigan players were staying overnight ,the hotel manager and the owner refused to let a black player- common in those pre Jackie Robinson/ Branch Rickey days- stay in the hotel! When Yost found out about his distraught minority player being refused , the immortal coach went ballistic. He threatened to not only pull his entire team from that racist hotel but vowed to both never give that establishment future business and UM patronage ever again, AND he threatened to go public against the hotel's segragationist policy! The hotel suddenly relented! The black player stayed! Yost also publicly denied the evil ,jealous slander and libel that Notre Dame charged when they alleged he was an " anti Catholic " ( Yost had a winning record vs Notre Dame and led the way to repeatedly reject ND 's applications to join the Big 10 because ND A ) lacked the high academic standards of Big 10 universities and B) " Tarnished " ND then as now, had a history of cheating scandals. There is ZERO proof he was ever anti Catholic, and not only wrote on paper it was a lie, but also sent each Big 10 university a letter outing ND for its libel and slander! Indeed, in his Michigan career,Michigan's Yost had a whopping 10 ( ten!) team captains who were ....Roman Catholic. It's also no accident that at a time when the ivy and other elite Eastern schools were rabidly Anti-Semetic in their Admissions policies,Michigan and Fielding H.Yost welcomed Jews with open arms. Some of the greatest Jewish sports stars in US history, played for him, including the great UM All American QB and future NFL Hall of Fame passer Benny Friedman. -Fielding Yost was instrumental in saving college football. There were injuries maiming and killing players back in the old days as this video presentation points out . Yost was the coach who testified before Congress and declared the now accepted phrase that: " Football builds Character". - Yost won the very first college post regular season game in any sport,the 1902 Rose Bowlwhich UM co created ; a UM win over Stanford 49-0. - Yost and Michigan pioneered playing outside their region, was the first team to play on a foreign nation's soil , and eventually the first university to fly to games . - He became the greatest most visionary Athletic Director in history. He invented the now ubiquitous (on every campus) multi sport "Field"houses that bear his name. Michigan has our nation's first Intramural building which,btw, still stands on it's beautiful campus. - Long before super highways and even huge metro and international airports. Fielding H.Yost built the iconic shrine that is " The House that Yost Built " ; University of Michigan stadium in 1927 . Not only is the Big House,the largest on campus stadium in America, but it was the first to seat 100,000 spectators. UM stadium is also the most unique stadium in history in that most of the stadium seating is below ground level. UM stadium is also the first football stadium ever to utilize electronic scoreboards.UM stadium has never allowdd any advertising inside their stadium which is also refreshing. He also started Michigan's hockey program; a program that is preeminent today with both the most National Championships and also the most Frozen Four appearances and most consecutive NCAA post season invitations at a mind boggling 22.The Yost Ice Arena is named after him. - It is believed that Yost was the first to coin the famous term " Michigan Man " of Character. UM is justly proud of being the only college in US history that can boast that it's football alumni include ALL of the following: " a US Supreme Court Justice, CEOs of billion dollar Fortune 500 Corporations, an astronaut, members of US Congress, Federal judges, members of USA Presidential Cabinets, and a President of the United States of America. " Impressive. The immortal Yost receives a lot of credit for that AND for UM to this day being 1 of just several colleges left whose football team has never received ANY major or even minor NCAA cheating violations involving: A. $$$$ Payola B .Other illegal material benefits , or C ) Academic Fraud. Thanks largely to Yost ( .883 winning percentage) and other UM legendary coaches like Kipke, Crisler, Oosterbann Schembechler, Carr, and now Harbaugh, who all followed him , academically elite ,world famous Michigan is also the by far Winningest team in college football history at all levels. Jim Harbaugh is a Michigan legend and a great elite coach, but not sure you can say he's the greatest coach Michigan's had. Yost built and one something like 5 or 6 championships in the early 1900's. Saying that I'm glad Harbaugh is Michigan's coach and he's brought Michigan back to the top of college football.

Thanks for mentioning that you are looking at doing a video on Biggie Munn. His only shortcoming as a coach was that his career was too short!! In only seven seasons with the Spartans, he transformed Michigan State into the nation's preeminent football power. Taking a page from Fritz Crislers playbook, Munn devised what was known as the "Michigan State Multiple Offense." In essence, his teams were designed to run from every formation at the time. It was so phenomenally successful that their was a book written of it. Duffy Daugherty said, "Our single wing is not as formidable as Red Sanders. Our split T is not as deceptive as Wilkinsons. Nor is our T as slick as Red Blaiks. But we can hit em with anything." In one aspect, Munn may have been footballs greatest coach ever. NOBODY COULD FIND ASSISTANT COACHES LIKE HIM!! NO ONE. Every Spartan assistant that became a head coach reached star status at the next level. On Duffy Daughertys first Michigan State staff were Bill Yeoman, who developed the veer offense at Houston. Dan Devine, who excelled at Arizona State, Missouri and later at Notre Dame. Beyond question, the greatest of them all was Nebraska legend Bob Devaney. A lifelong friend of Daugherty's, Devaney transformed Nebraska into the nation's greatest football power under his leadership. I could coach a college team with that caliber of assistant coaches!! Devaney and his handpicked successor Tom Osborne won 356 games and five national national championships!! If you can, please do a bio on Munn, Devaney, and Osborne. By the way, your bio on Yost is very well done. I'm looking forward to future episodes.😊

Cbrippee has an excellent comment on Daugherty and Munn. When I was home in Michigan I ran into former stars John "Big Thunder" Lewis and Don Coleman. Coleman was a a modest, charming man who deflected all praise of his career with the grace of a matador. This is telling because he was the second Soarran to have his number retired after John Pingel. Coleman may have been the best offensive lineman of all time. At least in relation to the era he played. "It was nothing unusual fit him to take out two or three men on a play" Duffy Daugherty said. Ex Spartan great Hank Bullough rated Coleman above the great George Webster as MSU's greatest ever player. " Whoever is second is way behind," Bullough said. Both Lewis and Coleman were black. Among a parade of stars recruited, regardless of color. That makes me proudest of all to be a Spartan fan.

When she came home for Chrismas of 1965 she brought me autographs of Bubba Smith and George Webster as they were in her dance class . My parents bought her a rail ticket to go to the 1966 Rose Bowl where they lost 14 - 12 to UCLA after beating them early in the season. But MSU won the Natty for 1965 which was voted on before bowl games at that time. They won in 66 also. She is still a Spartan booster.

@cbrippee In many ways, those were college footballs' greatest reams because they were so influential. Those were the first college teams to have a majority black starting lineup. Duffy Daugherty almost single handedly forced full-scale integration in college football. His underground railroad into the south produced a team that had eight All Americans in 1965!! A national record that will probably stand for all time is MSU having four players selected in the first eight picks of the 1967 NFL draft. Bubba Smith was the drafts first selection, followed by Clinton Jones, Gene Washington and the legendary George Webster. This record has yet to be broken and probably never will be. What a team of stars they were.

1) Yost/Michigan's biggest issue with the 1906 BT rule changes was that they were retroactive, meaning that multiple Wolverines would be immediately ineligible. Secondly, these changes were cynically less about player safety, and more a politically motivated swipe, coming mainly from Yost/Michigan's rival: Amos A. Stagg at Chicago. Stagg loved to be portrayed as a proponent of "muscular Christianity" (Chicago was a Baptist school), but was often just as dirty as the rest. See John Kryk's "Stagg vs Yost" for more. 2) Yost's racism was "complicated", as he had no problem with black athletes (including Willis Ward) competing on Michigan's successful Track and Field squads during his tenure as AD. Track and Field (Athletics) was huge during this era, so it's strange that Yost would only have objections re Football.

In all respect, as a Michigan State fan, Fielding Yost coached in an era when football was in a neophyte stage. Primitive and unskilled, with almost no real competition. Even mild physical superiority almost always resulted in victory. It wasn't until an entire generation later that the Wolverines mastered that wonder of wonders. THE FORWARD PASS!! As to Michigan's reputation as the winningest program in college football history, they first played a game in 1879!! Or two years earlier than "The Gunfight at the OK Corral." Of course, you would have more wins when you played fifteen to 20 years earlier than other schools. Once Yost encountered stronger competition, his record faded. Actuality, the greatest Michigan coach ever was Herbert Orrin " Fritz" Crisler. Crisler's offensive imagination that prized deception over sheer power revolutionized Michigan football. He was also the first college coach to perfect two platoon football. Specialized athletes at each position. As for Yost benching the phenomenal Willis Ward to accommodate "White Supremacists" this is a huge "black eye" on his name. Pun intended. As a Spartan fan, I am most proud that Michigan State led the nation in equality amongst all races. The great Clarence "Biggie" Munn and his protégé Duffy Daugherty openly recruited black athletes by the score. And consequently, the scores of their teams outpaced those of their rivals. While it is fair to say that Michigan has a greater history over all than Michigan State, the 20 year period of the Munn/Daugherty collaboration outpaced any similar period in Michigan history. Unless you want to include Michigan's wins over Buffalo and the Saginaw YMCA!! Among other stalwarts of that era. The real "Little Brother" epoch happened between the end of the Daugherty era and the Renaissance under Mark Dantonio. That earlier period compares with the greatest in collegiate football history.

EdNorton47 has a very apt comment. Biggie Munn did learn everything he knew from Crisler as his line coach. He clearly also absorbed Crisler's great knowledge of offensive style and strategy. This manifested itself in Munn being named Spartan head coach in 1947. His first game at Michigan State was against Crislers' greatest Michigan team, led by their famous "Mad Magician" backfield. Crisler ran up the score to the tune of 55-0 in that game!! A GIANT MISTAKE. During the game State's locker room was buried in sewage at half time. In the book Spartans by Fred Stabley, he told of how Biggie always maintained that Crisler did it on purpose. "Biggie was so mad the tears streaked down out of his eyes as he raged against Kris Kringle (Fritz Crisler), unleashing the sewage into our locker room at halftime," player Howard Adam's recalled. Munn went on to go 54-9-2 in his seven years as Spartan coach. In my opinion, his career superseded that of his mentor. Fueled by that loss, Munn won his last four games against Michigan in dominating fashion. During his reign as Athletic Director, protoge Duffy Daugherty once went eight straight seasons without losing to Michigan or Notre Dame!! Munn's career compares to any before or since. Even beating Notre Dame legend Frank Leahy three straight times. Finishing with a 3-2 lifetime edge against the man nicknamed "The Master." Leahy's record is second only to Knute Rockne in collegiate football history. What does that say of Munn and his teams? I would love to see a documentary on Biggie Munn. A true legend if ever one existed.

He graduated from UM 1899..But growing up I always saw a book about Yost on my grandpas shelf. Sadly both were dead by the time I came around. My father graduated from Michigan in 1925. He attended the game in which Grange ran wild. Now, for the criticism. Michigan State didn't join the Big 10 until 1948. When my father was a student M State was MAC, Michigan Agricultural College. Michigan did play it in football, but, according to my father, only did so because the Michigan legislature made them.

@@cfbhistorychannel heard a funny anecdote about his use of ringers. Apparently this guy that played for him at LaSalle and Nebraska came to KU. To go under the radar he attend KU basketball games. Naismith apparently spotted him and "introduced" him to Yost saying he ought to be playing football. His teams were known to out opponents in the hospital. Crazy times. I'm not sure I would consider any national titles legit before the formation of modern football.

John Doe Jr. has a good comment. The Wolverines do have a strong winning percentage. Particularly lately!! The key to that success is a great coaching staff. Their player development over the past two to three seasons has been exceptional. This is no knock on Michigan and other regional powers. The fact remains that Alabama, Georgia and other SEC schools can recruit with ridiculous ease compared to the Wolverines. Other schools can only win a title every ten to 12 seasons. When the stars align. The southeastern region of the country has the best talent. Michigan had a tremendous season. Maintaining that with Harbaughs probable departure and the SEC regional advantage will be daunting. Still, I might hate the Wolverines. Yet, I must tip my hat to them on a great campaign.

I agree. I know Saban is leaving but Kirby Smart could easily take his spot as the top dog that everyone hates. If he doesn't go to the NFL, they could be the new Bama, making it hard for non SEC teams to win it all.

Michigan won almost all of there national championships in the old area of football which IMO doesn’t count. It’s like Yale and Princeton. Very few modern area wins. Michigan sucks for this very reason living off of the past. 1 win in the modern area that took forever…

Fun Fact: he’s also the reason why Notre Dame isn’t in a conference. ND wanted to join the Big Ten, but the anti-catholic, anti-immigrant racist bigot boycotted ND. Then, ND went to their “Plan B”, which was to see if that independent thing can work for them. It did, and now everyone has a problem with it. Another fun fact, now that we have 12 team playoff, we’ll never have to join a conference. On another note, great season and good look in the Natty.
