Fieldmaster was killed in a jumps racing trial today. He didn't even fall - demonstrating that this sport is much more dangerous than flat racing.

There is this horse his name was Hickstead he was doing some show jumping and it was either before he started his course or after he started his course he fell onto his side and started to have a heart attack everybody who is at the show was in shock. Also there is another horse his name is Medina Spirit he was working out and he died during his workout I'm not sure what he died from but yeah he died when he was in racehorse training alright so I know how Medina Spirit died he died from a heart attack after he had a problem that day and after the veterinarian hold up person who put him on the truck not to put him on a truck now he got into trouble for killing Medina Spirit and the track people kick that person off the track that's what I heard from a video the had Medina Spirit 's death

It could very well stop,at least in the U.S. The industry is floundering financially here and is dependent on coupling with other forms of gambling that require a racetrack in order to legally operate. There's even a relatively new track here called Presque Isle that despite offering high range purses,provides a very small stabling area consisting of portable stalls on a marked parking lot. The infield is not even manicured other than mowing the grass. It was clear that it was built with minimal investment to make the coupled casino legal and to be bulldozed as soon as the right people were paid to allow casinos in that state (PA) operate without a track. In Kentucky,the bottom has fallen out from the breeding industry so badly that even the infamous Calumet Farm has sold some property and downsized production. That along with general disinterest by the public and increased awareness of cruelty,I could well see the U.S. racing industry implode within my lifetime. As someone who's worked on the backstretch for 18 years,I would be both happy and sad to see it go.

Some people are defending the sport by saying that “we don’t understand. These horses live/love to run”. I’m sure they do! I’ll take it a step further and say they NEED to run. For their mental as well as physical well being. But you can exercise them and play with them and let them run and jump and get it all out of their systems w/o pushing them to extremes. One of my dogs NEEDS to run every day. I push him just so I see he’s benefiting from the exercise a couple times a day and then make him stop so he doesn’t overheat. He’s content and we’ll behaved because of it. Animals NEED exercise, yes, but they don’t need to be pushed so that their lives are in danger for our “sport”. It’s disgusting.

It depends where its broken. In this case it was the worst bit basically the horses ancle bone and they cannot recover from that they die in the wild within 2-3 days of that unless a human intervenes and ends the suffering. Its common for wild horses to accidentally kick each other and cause this same injury and unfortunately they lay dying in pain for days. All the wokist vegan types are quick to jump on other humans backs but they are uneducated as far as animals and wildlife is concerned. They are the type to think they can pat a Swan. Aight so let me explain what happened since obviously the comment section is a massive circlejerk: The horse suffered a compound bone fracture, at it's ankle; two of the bones in the ankle split out (hence the jumping about) and the amount of jumping only made it worse and likely further compounded it (For those who dont know, a compound fracture is when the bone pierces the skin and sticks out exposed in the air). The horse, even with the to vet care in the world, was never going to walk again, and was likely going to die of infecton anyways. It was either put it down right then and there painlessly, or let it slowly be killed via bacterial infection with tremendous pain over months.

The best equine vets in the world were there, it is immediately obvious if a horse's broken leg can be fixed or not. The kindest thing is to end it's suffering ASAP. To do otherwise is cruel, selfish and disgusting. leona .1107 The same goes for you. You aren’t wrong but you aren’t right. The horse would be in immense pain after a broken leg, and recovery attempts would be mostly futile, but the horse doesn’t die. That’s why people almost always euthanize their horses because keeping the horse alive would just put the horse through suffering. Surgeries to get the horse helped cost a *LOT* of money, and the chances for recovery are slim to none. You also can’t amputate a horse’s leg like you can a dog’s. Dogs don’t mainly rely on balance and will still maintain a fairly active lifestyle. Horses rely on weight and balance, and wouldn’t be able to live life normally. I’m saying this in the nicest possible way, you should do some research too, *idiot*

Sadly, saving a horse with a broken leg is not as easy as saving a human or other animals like cats and dogs with a broken leg. Horses with a broken leg are often euthanized because the chance of successful recovery is very small, and the chance that the horse re-injures itself and / or spends the rest of its life in pain is much higher. I understand how sad and cruel it might seem to euthanize a horse just because it broke its leg, something that is rarely dangerous to us humans, but in this case, euthanasia is often much fairer and humane for the horse. Many horse breeds, especially Thoroughbreds, are bred to have heavy bodies and strong but light bones. Thus, when their bones break, they often just shatter, which makes it nearly impossible to surgically reconstruct it. Humans have some large muscles and a bit of soft tissue below the knee which helps stabilize a broken bone. Horses, on the other hand, have no muscles or any other tissue besides tendons and ligaments below the knee, which means that, even with a cast, the broken leg has barely any support. Horses are flight animals and instinctively flee when startled. They don't know that they have to mostly stand still and put pressure off of the broken leg for a few weeks to months, which makes the chance of re-injury very high. Horses are also very prone to develop diseases like laminitis after breaking a leg. Usually, a horse's weight is distributed around all four hooves, but with a broken leg, extra force is put on the remaining uninjured hooves which can create serious problems for the laminae at the base of those legs. Barbaro, for example, broke his right hind leg during the 2006 Preakness Stakes. Even though he broke his leg in more than 20 places, he successfully went through surgery and the first few weeks actually went very well. In July, about two months after his injury, he started developing a severe case of laminitis in his left hind hoof which was treated through a procedure called hoof wall resection where 80% of that hoof were removed. Both of his hind legs were now in casts, he was given a special support boot for his laminitic hoof, was on painkillers and a support sling was brought into his stall which allowed him to take off the weight on his hooves for a few hours at a time. In August, Barbaro's broken leg had fused to the point where the vets would have taken off the cast and had replaced it with a brace if it weren't for his unsound other hind leg. A few days later, he no longer needed the support sling and radiographs showed that his fracture was almost completely fused. By September 26, his left hind hoof had grown back about 18 millimeters, and the support boot he was wearing was replaced with a bandage. In November, his cast was permanently removed and replaced with a splinted bandage. His laminitic hoof seemed fine. In December, the bandage on his fractured leg was removed completely. But in January, another section of his laminitic hoof had to be removed and the cast on his right hind leg had to be applied again. He was put back on aggressive pain management and the support sling was brought back. Probably due to the lack of exercise, Barbaro then developing a deep abscess in his right hind hoof and two steel pins were inserted into the healed bones of that hoof in an additional surgery as part of an external skeletal fixation device with would allow the right hoof to bear more weight. But the procedure comes with risks which also includes the risk of re-injury. The same weekend, his front hooves showed clear signs of laminitis and Barbaro was not able to comfortably put weight on any of his legs anymore. He was euthanized on January 29, 2007, about seven months after his injury, despite all the effort to save him. But there are also examples of horses who survived their broken leg. A famous example is Mariah's Storm, who broke her leg during a race, made a full recovery and even raced again afterwards. She's still alive and just turned 31 on April 1st. You might have seen or heard of the movie "Dreamer" which is roughly based on her story. Hoist The Flag suffered a similar injury to Barbaro and also survived, but fractured his leg again at the age of 12 and was euthanized. Ruffian's sire Reviewer broke a leg on 4 different occasions and somehow managed to survive 3 of that. However, those cases are very rare, and you have to have a lot of luck for this to be possible. It also depends on the fracture as some are easier to fix than others.

True, that's what it's like! For everyone who comments saying that all horses should be euthanized when horses injure their legs, etc, are talking out their arse! BS & utter nonsense! I used to work at (& before that visit as a kid,) a rescue centre/sanctuary for horses & ponies. They would take on many cases & take in any unwanted horse, pony, mule donkey, etc. They would also take in retired race horses, but also horses who had to retire because of injuries. There was at least 5 horses there who had leg breaks, fractures when I had to sadly leave the job because we moved from the area. They would get the horse tended to & care for them for the rest of their days. Lots of the time they're shot because the owners only want them as "racers" & even if they treated & mended the injuries, they can't race again. This means bye-bye to any of the owner's & trainers money! On RARE occasions, yes, unfortunately the horse can't be saved & it's best for the animal to be put to sleep, but nearly every time it's because the poor horse can no longer race, so the owner(s) no longer need or want the horse! There's such a thing as a proverbial "cash-cow" but in this sense it's a "cash-horse!"

Saying that the horse is euthanized out of compassion or because it’s too hard to rehabilitate is a dumb argument. If your relative gets cancer you’re going to fight like hell to try and save them no matter the odds of success. It’s purely economical because horses are treated as property not as people. There’s no money in rehabilitating a horse with a broken leg. People in the riding community who claim to care about horses and their well-being are fake. You’re the reason that horses get injured. Riding is cruel, period.

The same weekend, his front hooves showed clear signs aminitis and Barbaro was not able to comfortably put weight on any of his legs anymore. He was euthanized on January 29, 2007, about seven months after his injury, despite all the effort to save him. But there are also examples of horses who survived their broken leg. A famous one is Mariah's Storm, who broke her leg during a race, made a full recovery and even raced again afterwards. She's still alive and just turned 31 on April 1st. You might have seen or heard of the movie "Dreamer" which is loosely based on her story.

What happened here was An accident that happens in almost every other equestrian sport. Even horses who are just having some fun in the field can get injuries. I saw one mare who got too excited, went for a gallop around her field, went to turn, slipped and shattered her front right leg. I do believe however hedges should not be as tall as they are in most races, but I'm quite happy with the height of the hedges in this video. A horses leg doesn't heal like a humans leg does. It's a front leg that's half as thin as ours, yet supporting half a tonne of body weight. Even if it's put in a cast or you don't allow him to walk on it, it takes MONTHS to heal, and can cause serious strain and further damage to his other legs. Not to mention that as a natural flight animal, having a future where they are unable to run properly without feeling pain can fill them with anxiety, stress at never being able to do their favourite thing. As a result, often the only humane choice is euthanasia, unless the break is VERY specific in a way it can be treatable. My horse is a thoroughbred, was a jumps racer and even won a few, and went on later in life to do even MORE hunting/jumping sports for pleasure. He lives a quieter life at 17 years old now, mostly just riding out, but he still loves nothing more than to flat out gallop and do a few hedge jumps, just like when he was a racer, he goes absolutely nuts and once he sees that fence, his ears perk up, he shakes with excitement and he just takes off, you can't stop him! Even see my video I made of him if you want proof, he'll spend all day galloping around his field at the top speed he can, kicking and bucking everywhere to get out that energy. It's what they're born and bred to do, and horses that don't love their job don't even start a racing career at all. Because if their heart isn't in running, they won't perform well enough to even be eligible to enter.

the point is that it happens so much more in horse racing than in any other equestrian sport. In 2015 there were 953 confirmed deaths that are directly linked to racing. How many dressage horses broke their legs in the arena? Or had a heartattack? And the second those race horses stop bringing in money they get dumped if not send off to a slaughterhouse.

finally a sensible person! the horse racing industry isn't great, but the sport itself isn't any worse than other equestrian sports (or the many dangerous sports humans participate in!) and horses actually tend to enjoy racing and jumping, as these things are natural behavior for them even in the wild (of course i personally believe you should only make racehorses out of horses that actually like to run, rather than forcing it on perhaps talented but unmotivated horses who don't enjoy it. alas, that's where the greedy and inhumane owners come into play and make racing look bad by mistreating their horses.) but anyway, like you said, horses can acquire fatal injuries from pretty much any type of event, or even a day gone bad out at pasture! euthanasia is the humane way to help a horse who receives a serious injury that will very negatively impact its quality of life. plus it's cheaper than spending thousands upon thousands to treat what may end up a lost cause no matter how well you take care of it. not everyone can afford to take a chance trying to save these horses, because racehorse owners are only rich if they win pretty consistently. which is very hard to do. it's a flawed industry for sure, many things could be improved to make it safer and more enjoyable for the horses. but that doesn't make racing evil either. it's an incredible sport with incredible history and just as many victories and happy endings as there are sad ones.

That horse died a terrifying death even ignoring what was probably an excruciating injury. To a prey animal like a horse who's ability to stand and run is imperative to survival, the feeling of becoming groggy and off-balance that would have come with the euthanasia drug would have been incredibly scary and contrary to the video text, I highly doubt he was dead when he hit the ground. The drug doesn't work that fast, as anyone who's had to say goodbye to an animal companion in this way would know Horses aren't meant to work for people any more than people are meant to work for horses. This is an utterly hearbreaking accident. I know a lot of people commenting here mean well, and I adore the fact that more and more people are caring instead of turning a blind eye to cruelty. However it's important to understand what cruelty is and what it is not. Putting the horse down as they did was the latter. Had they done anything else, it would have been beyond cruel. Now keep in mind this horse, as any racer, has a tremendous economical impact on its owners - good and bad. They have invensted loads in him. Euthanizing the horse isn't done lightly, and in fact, if the sport was just interested in the money, they wouldn't have put the horse down as it is an investment... However they put the wellbeing of the horse first. Most people involved in racing don't do it for cash, there aren't enough first prices with high enough stakes to pay for everything that goes into just maintaining the athletes (the horses). Most are lucky to break even. Also, in this specific sport there is absolutely no room competetively for a horse that doesn't itself have a heart for winning. They won't be fast enough. Just running, in and of itself, is not enough. Just like any other top sport, the competitor must have a great day, a great mindset, superior physique and a whole host of other variables to actually win, even more so if they are to win more than once. So are there abusers and rotten apples in the industry? Absolutely, based on the fact that people are involved. Do tell me where in any society that includes humans, this is not the case...

It would be nice to know over which time period this took place so one could judge better how lightly the decision was made or whether the horse was examined by a vet who determined that not killing the horse would be cruel/he might not be able to recover and walk again ect. Maybe one would have been able to find a new home for him where he could live the rest of his live, but if he's severely injured that would cost a lot of money... one positive thing I would like to mention is that the jockey got of the horse rather quickly and didn't try to make him continue. Also if there are children in the audience just letting them watch how this or horse struggles would be cruel as well

It is 2023, there is no reason there should not have already been enough advances in veterinary equine medicine that we cannot fix a horses leg. We build robotic legs for dogs and cats now in this day and age. Even it’s not fixed to where they could go back to the intense racing and jumping, they could still live and enjoy life. We just automatically assume that since a horse can’t do something they’re bred to do or love to do, then that must mean they can’t have any type of enjoyable life as a companion horse. Geez it’s a good thing we don’t kill human athletes when they get hurt and can no longer do exactly what they used to do.

I understand why u may think this But I race and I’ve had to put horses down Thankfully not for this reason But It’s a team sport You and the horse are a team And The horses are genuinely competitive and want to run And as a jockey it is ur job to make sure everything is right in order for the team to do so This involves spending an unbelievable amount of time with the horse And learning everything about it Emotionally and physically This obviously ends up creating a bond Between the two And it’s heart breaking when you loose a horse, because they know everything about you And you know everything about them So it’s not that they do not care It’s actually that they want to make it as quick as possible And try to cause as little pain to the horse So there is no time to cry The vet comes out and deems it whatever And you make a decision But make no mistake That jockey was heart broken And also the CROPS we use Are extremely light and do not harm the horse It’s pretty much just designed to make a loud noise to make the horse focus Not to promote pain for Speed

For all the children who get upset about this accident, here is a fact: horses grazing in fields all over the country are more at risk of injury than racehorses, and proportionately no less at risk of death from injuries than racehorses. Lameness in one leg can lead in less than two weeks to fatality. The horse cannot live on three legs. The statement above is irresponsible .Let's have some mature common sense and less emotion.. If you could take all risk out of athletic sport, we would all be sitting at home , obese and bored to tears, and there would be no thoroughbred horses, and no greyhounds. But grazing horses in fenced fields would continue to be prone to accidents and neglect on a vast scale, because many owners of such horses are impoverished AND ignorant as to when and how minor injuries are best treated, and try to avoid vet's bills.

so instead you want the horse to live in extreme pain and stress until the day he dies, which could be years later. Horses don't heal the way humans do. It is actually better for the animal to be put down. That fighting to live could actually been because he is in pain and stressed out. If a horse's leg is broken, there is no point to try and repair that leg because it’s almost impossible to surgically reconstruct the fractured leg. While humans have some large muscles and a bit of tissue below the knee that helps stabilize a broken bone, along with a cast, a horse has no muscle or any other tissue besides tendons and ligaments below the knee. The lack of muscle and other tissue means, even with a cast, the broken bone has little to support it.
@Dayum1353
@Dayum1353 2 жыл бұрын

I understand why u may think this But I’ve lived all my life on farms and I race and I’ve had to put horses down Thankfully not for this reason But It’s a team sport You and the horse are a team And The horses are genuinely competitive and want to run And as a jockey it is ur job to make sure everything is right in order for the team to do so This involves spending an unbelievable amount of time with the horse And learning everything about it Emotionally and physically This obviously ends up creating a bond Between the two And it’s heart breaking when you loose a horse, because they know everything about you And you know everything about them So it’s not that they do not care It’s actually that they want to make it as quick as possible And try to cause as little pain to the horse So there is no time to cry The vet comes out and deems it whatever And you make a decision But make no mistake That jockey was heart broken If ur a good jockey You become emotionally mentally and physically attached to ur horses and when u loose one like this It’s like loosing a best friend We do not treat them like objects Unfortunately there are cases of it But all the places I’ve been Are not and do not

What the fuck is wrong with humanity? I hate every single moment of this disgusting existence we call the human experience. It's a failure to us and everything around us.
