FIFA approve new World Cup & Club World Cup formats

At a meeting of the FIFA Council in Rwanda, it has been confirmed that there will be 104 games in the 2026 World Cup as they move to a 12 groups of 4 format.
Also approved by the FIFA Council were plans for an expanded Club World Cup which will feature 32 teams and will first be played in the summer of 2025.

The two ‘new’ club competitions are again for the few elite sides that win or compete regularly in the CL, what about the rest that rarely play in international competitions? The introduction of the UEFA Conference League a few years ago was a step in the right direction for some of the mid table sides to aim for. It is at this level expansion and access to more competitions should be focused to help bridge the financial gap between the haves and the have nots.

And this in a sense bridges a certain gap between the haves, european teams in general, and have nots, teams from the rest of the world.

It might be unpoppular but when it comes to the club world cup it was time, it's unfair that clubs from other confederations other than europe almost never get to meet the top european teams in the football matches, and the only time they get to they treet it like a preseason friendly. This is hugely important because football is too elitisized in the sense that europe are too good compared to other confederations, and the problem with the previous format is that the disparity kept growing and growing which shows at the FIFA world cup (nations), for the other confederations to get better, and the game to be less eurofocused and more a worldwide game, which would be better for football as a whole you need these kind of competitions, for teams from other confederations to compete against the elite and learn and improve, so the qua;lity of play get's spread out around the world and the whole world improves at football not just europe. If the fact that it brings too many games is an issue, we can either make european leagues have less games, or make the season start earlier finish later(might be problematic and would be bad a bit for players) but their are many solutions for such a problem.

@@chinglee100 They should be given respectable amounts for the amount of talents they have, and let me remind you that mexican teams have done quite well in libertadores when they competed in it, and in the club world cup, as well a few times and now MLS is rivaling them and even won the last concacaf champions league, so maybe put your bias elsewhere because North American teams have the potential of being very good in the future due to the amount of money that USA and Canada has and how the sport is growing and how they are investing in it. The places should be alocated the way the fifa world cup places would be allocated, exceptyou take out the two playoff spots and give them to south americaand you create a new playoff for concacaf, Asia, Africa, and oceania, a bit like intercontienental playoffs but for clubs. This would give 13 european spots, 7 south American spots, 4.5 african spots, 4.5 Asian spots, 2.5 spots for concacaf, and 0.5 spots for Oceania, with the potential of this to change overtime based on how football evolves, and how teams from diffrent confederations do in the competition with a cap of a certain number of teams from one confederation maximum to make the competition, to make sure it favorises football worldwide, and not from one confederation.

I think the world cup should happen a week or two earlier than usual. They'll still be in the rhythm and match sharp. That's mainly the reason why the Qatar world cup was so successful. Because of such a short turnover. Hopefully that would also mean more time off after the world cup and before the pre season or start of the season if you went far in the world cup

There's still a long wait because some footballing seasons back in the day ended in mid May and their next game would be early June. It's a long break for them to get back into the rhythm. This world cup had such a short turnover, they were already match fit, sharp and that's why despite the time of year and location, it was my favourite world cup ever. Has had the most goals, so much drama, late goals and entertainment and the big factor behind that is the short turnover. That's why I want future world cups to start in early June

No not really in the first years yes but it will eventually equal the playing field more between confederations and will give more chances for teams around the world to play more european big clubs making the game less elitisized in europe and more spread out world wide. It will also give the chance for teams around the world to learn and improve from those games, vs the european elite, which will improve the quality of play worldwide, and will make it less focussed in europe . It also gives the chance for teams across the world to win the biggest honours, and makes the competition more serious and interresting where european teams are far more likely to play their first teams. Overall it is a good step in the right direction, for football as a whole and for the equalization of the sport in between confederations.

The fixture is already fully packed as it is. Introducing new competitions will do players more harm than good. Teams play games after every 4 days (Manchester United, for example). Now add two more competitions or so to that fixture; tell me what you get. Playing after every 2 days is not a distant reality. It's an insane amount of games if you ask me.

I have many doubts about this working in a good way. I hope I’ll be proved wrong, but biology with math tells me that this will affect the quality of football each team that’s going to play in those competitions. There will be less time for training, more fatigue (increase in players getting tired and higher chances of injuries for the players) and less preparation time for each game. These facts will be there to deal with. Fatigue might be countered with squad depth, but training and preparation time per game will be affected badly.

Then reduce the number of league games, this is super important for world football as a whole and to level the playing field in between confederations and to give every team from around the world the chance to win the biggest honours, not just europeans. This is a mesure against UEFA trying to create it's own super confederation/ super league. Every club from anywhere around the world deserves the same chance, and that is far from being the case with the current format, for once fifa does something right.

What is happening in Uefa is like the super league but for confederations. they are trying to form their own elite confederation and leave out and ignore clubs from the rest of the world. The Fifa club world cup expansion is the best thing that could of hapened for football worldwide, stop complaining that your super confederation and teams in it are forced to open up to teams from the rest of the world. This is good for world football, and will help other confederations improve and get better and will help football be less elitisized, in the long run, and will give every single club from every single confederation, the chance to win the bigggest honours, which is the way it always should have been. Football is not just about europe you know, and it was time the super confederations where stopped in it's tracks. Now I don't like FIFA but I have to give it to them, that was a good move.

Fifa/ IFAB I reckon you look into including one or two teams as well from the six regional confederations into which the world is divided , I want to see something. For example, in south africa premier division we have Mamelodi Sundowns and they could really use a new challenge.... as I write they just beat up Al Ahly 5-0 and again won 5-1 locally against Royal AM. They are number 1 in the log with 23 games played, 2 draws, 2 loses, 59 points, 45 goals, goal difference 36. And the team just below them is no were near as a match, goal difference for number 2 in the log is 10 - cabanga! This means they will be extending their record in a row to six this year 'when' they win. I've always been an Orlando Pirates fan - once and always, but these guys are the best we got... They should be the new Bafana Bafana, the sky is the limit.

i'm genuinely shocked it took this long to make a club version of the world cup, just keep it in the years between the actual world cup and the euro's and we're good. also a limit on the amount of teams from 1 country would be nice as well exceptions are obviously the winners of the yearly tournaments but when it comes to coefficient it needs to be more spread out, the 8 European places should go to the best team not qualified from the top 8 leagues in the coefficient table. none of this 6 or maybe even 7 clubs from england now that newcastle are stupid rich dominating the european spots.

I get your point but I think every single team should have equal chances of making it so I like the current format, however, I would like if they put a cap on the amount big clubs can spend, and make it more reasonable, so that whoever makes it is not based on who has the most $$$$, but who runs their football club the best, and who is has the best team with similar amounts of money spent. I think that the financial rules in european football are ridiculous and not nearly tuff enough on big clubs. People saying that leagues such as the premier league are so competitive specifically at the top of the table is a joke, considering, it is almost always the same 6 big teams that make the top 6 that is not competitive. A competitive league is a league where anybody can finsih top or bottom, and where it is borderline impossible to predict what will happen. Maybe the prem is less worse than leagues that are always won by the same team for the title race, but it is still not really competitive, I would even say that leagues such as the bundesliga, other than for the top 2 are more competitive than the prem, and more unpredictible, where big clubs such as Shalke can get relegated (and the top 2 is not even that much due to financial disparities, but due to the fact that Bayern and Dortmund do things so well. Allthough they could tighten up certain financial rules there too).

I think Fifa needs to give players at least a 2 month vacation before a Fifa World Cup and national club competitions stop as well. Too many players end up with injury and superstars which worked and waited 4 years to play end up missing out of the world championship. With a 2 month break period it gives big stars a chance to recover on time before coming to the world cup. There is a greater chance of a player recovering from an injury if Fifa gives a break period for the national teams before the world cup starts.

oh no quite the opposite it is the exact opposite of super league this stops a super confederation named UEFA that wanted to close itself up as much as possible and ignore teams from the rest of the world, and never play against them, or as least as possible. This gives the opportunity for any team around the world to win the biggest honours, not just in europe, and levels the playing field in between confederations. If their is anything that is super leaguish it is rejecting such a tournament and favorising european, and UEFA elitism in the sport, for them to build their new super confederation, and close itself off to smaller teams outside of europe like it has always has tried to do, a lot like how the super league is trying to exist to close itself off to the small clubs in europe.

The Fifa Club World Cup with 32 teams in 2025 is fine, but don't make it every 4 years as it should be an annual competition or nobody will care about it. The only thing it will do is just make the UEFA champions league and Libertadores the only two major continental tournaments fans care about since Europe and South America are the 2 strongest federations in the world and since Africa, Oceania, North America don't have world titles.

The competitions will still be dominated by European and South American teams and hence they will get the majority of the revenues , which might even wider the gap instead of close it ! For example Argentina got around 42mil $ for winning the World Cup , France 30 mil $ and a country like Canada got 10mil $ for their performance ! Look at the European Champions League , more teams than ever are competing in it , but realistically only 7-8 teams have a real chance of winning it , the likes of Real Madrid , Bayern , Liverpool have been dominating the competition for 10 years now , you might have an outlier here and there , but i guarantee you , the next 20 winners of the ECL will come out of England , Spain , Germany or Italy ! In the 1980s 1990s you had teams like Ajax , Anderlecht , Benfica , Steaua Bucarest , Red Star Belgrade etc. all able to reach the finals an win it , now only a select few countries and teams benefit from the competion.

Club World Cup for men and women should just be the club continental champions. Keep it exclusive to the best teams, as it’s the most prestigious club trophy in world football. I’d add a secondary Pre-season competition for domestic champions of men and women’s Leagues . To make it fair, entry to the competition would be based on things like fair play, total number of points, games won, fewest games lost etc… The winners of that get added to the CWC or something along those lines.

Nah that format is better I find a bit like how the new champions league is better than the old one where only the league champions of european leagues can participate. It will make the competition far more interresting, and will improve the sport world wide because other teams from other confederations, are gonna be able to meet top european teams, and learn, and improve, based on their games agaisnt them, which will make teams from other confederations, catch up more and more.

I personally couldn’t give two f**ks about the Club World Cup, it’s never really interested me and probably never will. I will always love the FIFA World Cup, period. I love the new 12-groups of 4 format for the 2026 World Cup in USA/Canada/Mexico glad that FIFA saw that having 4 team groups will retain the drama and excitement.

There's already a Club World Cup but which takes the champions of each continent plus the tournament host. The current model is only flawed because they would just throw in the undeserving host club champion, often from a rich Gulf monarchy. A reworked CWC doesn't need 32 teams, just expand it to 12 and host it every two years instead of annually. That way there's slow hype that builds up and people actually care about it! The model would be: 6 continental champs from year one and 6 continental champs from year two are the contenders. If the same club was continental champ twice in a row, then the two runners-up from each year have a match to determine who the second entry is from that continent. If the same club was continental runner-up twice in a row then they get instant entry.

I don't agree with the 8 best third place teams making the next round, should be the top 2 only out of the 4 getting out of the groups. It makes a joke of it, it reminds me of the euros where Portugal were poor, finishing 3rd, but went on to win the euros without really winning a game in 90mins till the final rounds.
