Fun Facts: 1.The assistant manager of Socceroos at that time is none other than the current manager, Graham Arnold. 2.Australia reached the Round of 16 in two occasions. The ironic fact is that the opponents that denied the Socceroos' dream (Italy and Argentina) went on to win the whole thing at the end. Italy and Argentina also won their World Cup after beating the same opponent on penalties (France). 3.Japan beat Australia in the next year's Asian Cup held in 4 ASEAN countries. Aloisi got another goal, but the Socceroos lost on penalties in the quarter final. They also lost to the same opponents in 2011 Asian Cup Final held in Qatar after extra time, still with the same golden team from the 2006 World Cup (minus team captain Mark Viduka).

@@aerime That's the main reason why Australia and Japan were allowed to face each other in the same group at that time. FIFA still recognized Australia as the OFC members during the final draw, and since then, both nations weren't allowed to be in the same group of the World Cup, unless they were the UEFA members.

@@craigedwards29401997 qualifying just makes me sad. Literally lost in the last 20 minutes and we should’ve been up by 4 goals before Half time in the 2nd Leg. Lost the tie on away goals. Seeing how Iran went in 98, they would’ve done well and under Venables and a 20 year old Harry Kewell close to his absolute peak when at Leeds, would’ve been a real unknown for Germany and Yugoslavia to handle.

日本のダラダラ守備が気になる。当日相当暑かったそうだが、それならそれで体力ある選手をスタメンで使うべき。まして、初戦から足をつる坪井は本人もそうだがメディカルチームの責任もある。あとは、守備のシーンで1 topならまだしも2 topなのだからもっと降りてきて守備してほしい。中盤のディフェンスも相手に時間を与えすぎ。全体的に日本の守備にあまりルールが無いのがわかる。 総じて、監督とその監督をここまで引っ張った協会の責任。負けるべくして負けた。
