Fifty years of the iconic Byker Wall in Newcastle | ITV News

50 years ago, in 1968, design work began on the iconic Byker Wall Estate in the east of Newcastle. The architect Ralph Erskine encouraged local people to get involved in the plans for their community, and two thousand homes were built by 1982.
Like many council estates, it's had its problems over the decades - but last year it was recognised as the best neighbourhood in the UK.
