📌 Subchondral Fracture
A subchondral fracture appears as a subchondral linear hypointensity, without an associated contour deformity or visible involvement of the articular surface.
On MRI, it is identified as a curvilinear hypointensity surrounded by bone marrow edema without associated contour deformity.
📌 Osteochondral Fracture
Osteochondral fractures involve both articular cartilage and the subchondral bone plate.
They appear as a fracture line that violates the joint surface, subchondral bone plate depression, articular surface disruption and fragmentation, or a combination of these features.
The term "osteochondral fracture" is reserved for cases where subchondral bone depression or fragmentation creates an osteochondral fragment, typically in the setting of acute trauma.
