Thank you for that great video demonstration on root pruning and how to handle the suckers. I’ve always been hesitant to disturb the roots too much. When would be the best time to root prune if I live in Southern California?

Dormant season is best but if not dormant then when the tree is not producing fruit such as winter

Hi David, great job on that tree. In your area, when do in-ground fig trees go dormant, and for how long? Zarko

Backyard figs That’s a tricky question it really depends on the weather last year. For example, we had a very cold November yet a warm February and March then freezing conditions beginning of April so the Figs started to awaken early and they got hit by frost. I would say, typically, by the middle of December things are dormant, and they start to awaken near the end or beginning of April

Do fabric pots air prune and keep them from getting root bound?
@TheFigHunter2 жыл бұрын
Hi Matthew. We have found that they can get root bound in fabric pots too. For our larger trees, we have switched to square, high density plastic, pots that have holes throughout the sides to promote air pruning. By even they will occasionally need root pruned. Fortunately the sides individually unscrew to make it easier.
