PRUNING FIG TREES
To give the trees the desired shape.
To preserve the shape given to trees that have been shaped and become productive.
Balancing fruit yield and shoot formation in trees.
Making fruit thinning by removing branches.
Reducing the effect of periodicity (the product is present one year and absent the next).
By providing light and ventilation to the inner parts of the tree crown with a good crown, it is possible to get fruit from these parts.
Reducing branch breakage and sagging.
When Should Pruning Be Done?
Pruning of fig trees is generally done during the winter rest period when the weather is not too cold. In regions where the winter is not very cold, such as the Aegean and Mediterranean Regions, pruning begins in the autumn, as soon as the trees shed their leaves. It can be continued until the trees wake up at the end of winter.
Pruning in fig trees affects the quality of flowering and fruit production. Young Fig trees are planted as a straight sapling without a crown. In the first years, side branches coming from the trunk are left untouched. Only the shoots emerging from the root neck are cleaned. The low height and short branches of fig trees affect early and abundant fruit yield.
Rejuvenation pruning is done to form a new crown by creating strong shoots on fig trees again. Thus, not only the productivity of the tree will be increased again, but also the quality of the fruits will be increased. Rejuvenation pruning is not done on fig trees that are old and about to die. In rejuvenation, the degree of resistance of the fig tree to pruning is also taken into consideration. In rejuvenation pruning, dried, dense and overlapping branches are first cut. By shortening the remaining branches, the crown of the tree is reduced and the formation of strong shoots is ensured again. In some trees, a double-layered crown is formed as a result of pruning. In such trees, after removing the upper crown, short pruning is done on the weakened lower crown branches to create a strong and balanced crown on the tree.
