Next time someone is about to spoil your favorite show, don’t plug your ears: research shows that "spoilers" actually make you enjoy stories more.
Taking away the element of surprise seems like it should make a story less enjoyable. Yet people will watch #movies with surprise endings more than once, and people still gladly watch classics like Romeo and Juliet even though they know the story.
UC San Diego #psychology professor Nicholas Christenfeld put #spoilers to the test. Not only do spoilers not earn their name, they should really be called “enhancers”: people consistently enjoyed spoiled stories more than unspoiled stories in experiments.
🤓 We spoiled the result, but wait, there’s more to Nicholas Christenfeld’s research on spoilers and why they help us enjoy stories: bit.ly/OMGSpoilers

But does that experiment actually account for the hard-earned emotional investment in some narrative or character over extended periods of time? What about the moment in which something is spoiled, wouldn't that be considered an unpleasant experience in itself? What about differences in plots and their plot-twists? What about the creators' choice to unveil a plot point in a certain manner?

Lan Des I have read about studies that showed the opposite of what this study showed. This kind of study is not necessarily as accurate as with movies or books because of emotional investment, things of that nature. The length of the story and how involved you get with the characters plays a key role in whether or not you really feel the suspense. At times it's the shock of things happening that you didn't see coming that make the movie or book interesting. I have to say this is more than likely a flawed study. Also, the person conducting the study wanted to come to that particular result. Studies of this nature dealing with people tend to always follow the line of the expectations of the person or people conducting the study.

Just something slightly different about spoilers that I think you may have overlooked: "Spoilers" by their name "spoil" the story. Leaking a late plot point may not necessarily be a spoiler, but leaking a hidden character detail may be, if it detracts from the overall enjoyment of the story - and that is the point. A piece of information that would cause the average person to dislike something that they originally liked. Let me give you a solid example from Game of Thrones. Assume someone is watching the start of Series 1, Episode 1, and they are thinking "This Kingsguard knight looks AWESOME! He's going to be my favourite character!". If someone tells them that he throws a child out of the window before it comes up on screen, that detracts from the scene and "spoils" it. There is still analytical information to be gathered, but the emotional connection is (at least in part) severed by this foreknowledge. Another example would be if an "honest" character was shown to be false long before their falsehood appears, the perception of that character will be different, and perhaps there would have never been the "trusting" part in which the character perhaps tries to use. I hope this provokes some more thought on this idea - especially since there is no real 'solid' definition of what a spoiler is, and since every person is different, and affected differently to different stimulus, in different circumstances with different attachments to different stories. Doing reliable blanket studies on such an obscure topic must have been difficult to create a reliable, repeatable experiment for. Great episode, by the way!
@seastormsinger
@seastormsinger 8 жыл бұрын
Actually, that follows with the data presented in the video- it showed that people get more enjoyment when the ending is spoiled as part of a descriptor, but not that much more. And, as you say, not every plot point is created equal, like, you don't "spoil" game of thrones by saying its the story of an exiled magical fire princess retaking her country with her dragons and her secret half brother (yes, I am presuming here, since ASOIAF is not finished yet) from the self-destructing ruling families who can't stop murdering each other long enough to notice the ice zombie apocalypse in the north". That's a lot of pre-information, but it doesn't give you any specifics. Now, giving away the truth behind Hodor's name, that is a spoiler that can only ruin your experience. My guess would be that the more guess-able a plot point is, the better off you are knowing it in advance. So, the fact of Jon Snow's resurrection is not really a spoiler, and neither is Roose Bolton's death, but what happened between the Night King, the Three Eyed Crow, Brandon, and Hodor would be.
@acrefray
@acrefray 8 жыл бұрын
seastormsinger I agree to an extent. I don't think spoilers inherently have to do with plot points, but rather things which are designed to create an emotional moment - particularly the first-time big hitters (Like with Hodor). Thank you for your logical and insightful answer, good day to you sir.

It's called spoiler in one language, it's not literally called spoiler in other languages, so you can't say by definition it's a bad thing, it's just what we came up as a bad thing here, but it's not universal, the english speaking world in particular has always been more sensitive than usual from my experience.

I think every person and every fictional story are different when it comes to spoilers. The experience you get when you know nothing is also different from the one you get when already know what's coming. People can enjoy the story more the second time, but they won't enjoy it the same way they did the first time. Anyway, I personally like spoilers, but let people decide themselves whether they want to know beforehand or not.

Some things suck when spoiled. Like I had 6th Sense spoiled for me, and it kinda ruined it because I could see the whole time all the things pointing out the twist ending, but I might not have noticed them in quite the same way if I didn't know the twist going in. Most things though can be spoiled at least in minor ways and it's not gonna ruin it. Actually there was one spoiler I needed. I was reading a book series and one of my favourite characters gets trapped on an island alone at the end of book one, seemingly for the rest of eternity, and I couldn't read the other books until some one told me if he ever got to leave the island even for a while. I begged my friends to tell me, and after a few tears they finally did. I was just so distraught over the idea that he'd be stuck there all alone forever.

I've had this experience too. You want to know that your investment in something is worth it (and sometimes you cant tell whether or not a story will have a happy or sad ending from the first few chapters), In my case i was curious about Lost, read up the ending and now i feel bad for those who watched it week after weeks for years, for such an awful pay-off.

This experiment is so bad. A perfect example of an experiment with no real world correlation. Because you are giving people a random, boring book and saying what happens in it. This may even make people give more of a damn about even reading it, since they otherwise have literally 0% interest in reading the random book you threw at them. Now compare it with things people actually care about. Let's say someone has waited for 10 years for the sequel to a movie. And then go spoil that for them casually in a way that they can't guard themselves against. Just throw it out there. When you have had surgery from all the broken bones in your face from getting punched, you can update the results of your study.

When you watch The 6th Sense for the first time the twist of Bruce Willis being dead is just a twist. To FULLY understand the entire story you have to have seen it once for the twist and watch it again for the context. Knowing the twist the first time let's you actually watch and enjoy the movie for what it is: a story about a ghost who can't accept his own death, instead of a story of a little kids who sees dead people and his counsoler. So yeah, knowing certain things actually makes movies, books, shows and shit more enjoyable because you'll be watch the REAL story, not the one you were tricked into watching.

Interesting study, but bad thinking. This does not really answer the question. Of course we can enjoy a story when it is spoilt, of course we can see a Shakespearean play and not care about knowing the outcome. But spoiling a story does something very specific: it spoils the moment of revelation so that you basically can never experience it. It therefore gives you a different experience by essentially taking one away. Without spoilers, the only experience taken away is the one mentioned: watching a movie for the first time spoilt. I wager nobody really cares about the latter though. Whether we can still enjoy a story after spoilers is not the issue. Or rather enjoyment does not exclude the possibility of it having been ruined in a way. So enjoying a “spoilt” story does not mean that the experience was not nonetheless ruined. After all, as hinted in the clip, I can always watch the story a second time, and reap the benefits of having it spoilt. I for one experience a film very differently the first time I watch it and when I watch it a second time, spoilt.

I actually enjoy stories much more when I spoil the endings for myself. Although of course there are certain things I enjoy discovering on my own (so few it's not worth mentioning). I enjoy starting a story without much or any premise at all, to decide for myself if I could be interested in said story. However once I find myself asking "OHH WILL THIS HAPPEN OR WILL THIS HAPPEN? WILL THIS PERSON DIE? WILL THIS PERSON END UP MARRYING THIS PERSON OR THIS PERSON? etc.", I find myself being way too fixated on wanting to know the ending that my consumption of the story becomes way too obsessive. Resulting in lost sleep and an incapacity to do or think about anything else until I know the ending. Since I began spoiling certain parts of a story for myself early on in the story, I found it is much easier and more pleasurable for myself, so that I can enjoy the scenery of the story much more. The character developments, the relationships, the tragic and/or happy endings.. Knowing the spoilers prior to seeing the story unfold actually helps me be more critical of what I read, watch and listen to. As well as be more appreciative of the time it takes to come up with such an enticing story. It makes me point out the parts that stuck out the most to me, and ask myself why, and most importantly, take my time with the process in which the creation of the story required. Spoilers VS. no spoilers for me is easily comparable to two scenarios: 1 - Golfing down a delicious meal because I'm afraid I won't be hungry anymore if I eat it too slowly... when in reality, your body that enjoys the taste of something will always become hungry again, even if it's not all in one sitting. 2 - Taking a photo of a beautiful masterpiece or scenery and walking away to see the next one VS. standing in front of this work of art and analyzing all the minute parts of it all, even if it does take me more time. I personally really like spoilers (usually the big endings, or the conclusions). They help me appreciate the story much more. And as is mentioned in this video, the ending of a story is not the only reason to spend so much time on a story! The ending is simply the conclusion the author/storyteller chose to tell. If I focus on the other details, I can appreciate and come to understand the result ending much more than I would have otherwise. HAPPY SPOILING!

To me, spoilers enhance my experience. I'm a person with a very strange attention span. I can easily switch my attention, but when i get my attention attached to something, i cannot think of anything but that. When i see some mysterious foreshadowing in the story, or some plot twist that will be resolved only much later, i cannot think of anything else but how that was, and how it will end. Thus, spoiler-less-ness ruins my experience, as i do not focus on anything beside the thing that i have my attention for. That's why second-runs are much better and easier for me to watch or play. Everytime i start a videogame, and when story becomes thrilling after the middle, i just stop my exploration of the world and side-quests, and just focus on the story. And i can keep playing that story for hours, and my brain becomes pressured with thrill. Especially when there's one game segment that doesn't let me to go to the end easily, like a hard boss-fight. I get so worked up that i start to cheat fo finally finish the game! Yes! I get so worked up in wanting to see the conclusion, that i just start to straight out cheat the game, so i finally could experience that story! >< And only after that i can restart the new game, and then play it fairly, slowly, enjoyablengly. Also spoilers make myself more ready for character deaths. As i can prepare myself to cry. ...BTW, most of the stories i've played got spoiled even before i played them. I knew that everyone will die in (--)Part 6, i knew that (--) will die at the end of (--) war, i knew that main character will die in (--), and the bad guy is basically won. But those spoilers don't ruin the fun for me. Instead, they add more thrill.

Ehhh.. well to start off.. yes it does ruin the story if you specifically didn't want to know what happens.. you can't speak for everyone because we clearly know so many people who it does completely ruin movies and stories for. Secondly those were just random books they most likely didn't give a shit about and wouldn't have read outside that experiment.. if you got them to tell you their favourite current tv show or book they're reading and then you spoil that.. they sure as hell aren't going to enjoy it as much because the adventure of discovery is gone, like what's going to happen.. of course you enjoy the book as you read it too, but that will also be dimmed down is you're sad about knowing the ending already. So.. do the experiment again with something they currently care about in their own lives.. or don't because that's a shitty thing to do lol, and the ones who agree to have it done already know what you're doing, and if they agree to it then they wouldn't mind as much so that's a flaw.. You enjoy things the second time round sometimes, because of the story itself was good and whatever.. and you notice more things sometimes.. for me I only watch all movies once unless they're an easy comedy and the first time is still better.. but by making their first viewing more like a second viewing.. that takes away an element that only the first viewing can provide, and I'd say that would be a negative for a lot of people when you do it to things they themselves care about. I'd also say it depends on the story.. like the woman who kills the dude, you might get more joy from the rest of the book knowing that she will get him in the end.. so it's not as shitty reading her troubles through the book.. (assuming he was making her life shitty, I dunno). But a spoiler that just ruins shit.. or provides nothing of value.. well that's no good.. like Jon waking up.. what good is that.. how does that offer any more joy for the story. How about you just spoil everything that is about to happen lol. Also, douche move adding that pointless spoiler. Definitely seems to be issues overall.

Imagine yourself in 1980, waiting in line to see The Empire Strikes Back. You've been anticipating this movie for months, and you're wondering how they will top the original Star Wars (which you loved), then some asshole blurts out that Darth Vader is Luke's father! All of a sudden, you feel robbed of the full enjoyment you would have had going in knowing nothing. Sure, you'll know everything about the plot on subsequent viewings, the the first time should be special. The first viewing should be full of surprises, then when you watch it a second time, you can still enjoy it because when a movies's "I am your father" moment comes up again, you can reminisce how that made you feel on your first viewing.

To me it's not what happens in the story as much as knowing HOW it happens in the story. I remember being scared to death when I watched Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire because I had read the books and I knew Voldermort would come back. I remember being anxious and stressed every time Norma and Norman bates held a heated argument on Bates Motel because I knew what happened on Psycho and that a there was this milestone that was expected to be reached at some point. When I watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, I didn't know if I wanted to see Margot's Sharon Tate die, because that's what happened in real life, so, I was anxious as well, listening to the narrator tell the dates, describe the prior facts, and then.... SPOILER ALERT, Tarantino gave it his own plot twist. Brad Pitt and Leo kill the bunch of hippies and Sharon gets to live. NICE OUTCOME! better than expected!!! Spoilers improve the experience a lot. Just don't call them spoilers

The problem with this study is you're spoiling something the test groups had no prior interest in, that's a lot different than spoiling something people are already interested in. For the former the spoil might be the only thing that generates any sort of desire to view the work, the latter on the other hand is specifically here to experience that plot for the first time.

I love playing devil's advocate but count me among very hostile reaction. Many people I meet who are not avidly into film/books care very little about spoilers and have no qualms watching a movie multiple times to the point of insanity. I like things to unfold exactly as they should and be intended to. I avoid trailers for this point. Just the covers alone you can get an entire tone and feeling for the story and off that guess too much due to the overwhelming predictability and over-usage of common ideas in mainstream films. People read, and watch for different reasons. I obsess about films when I watch them I am completely absorbed trying to figure out everything that the film-maker, writers, and etc. are trying to convey/do. Like a puzzle to me. The difference in satisfaction of solving a very difficult riddle or someone telling you the answer right as you felt like you were about to get it. Once the mystery is gone I often have very little drive to re-watch. All movies are different some are puzzles, some are very intense and emotional pieces that grab hold of you, and some are just an entertainment to pass time and often people decide for themselves which movies are which to them. I think spoilers would detract enjoyment in that order from most to least respectively. I imagine spoilers give some people something to look forward to or a piece of context to frame the story. I imagine telling me the hero lives in every marvel movie wouldn't change much, but spoiling the perfect momentum and build up to the perfect ending of American beauty... UGHH! I think I would hate you for life.

Different movies serve different functions. You CAN spoil "The Departed" or "Interstellar" Replay value is contextual: high replay value = The Godfather, Pulp Fiction ; low replay value = Hostel Movies =/= TV Series Spoiling the movie right before you watch it =/= spoiling the new episode right before you watch it Cliff hangers are real.

I'm super mixed on this. In general, I like spoilers. How I imagine something to be and how it will actually be are often 2 different things, so if someone gives me verbal spoilers i can still enjoy a show or a movie anticipating how something will look despite having knowledge of the ending. That being said, there is an anime and im not going to say which, but for around 20 episodes not much happens and there's a twist and when it happens, it was like completing a jigsaw puzzle all at once. I cant imagine gasping out loud if i knew that was coming. The 20 episodes felt like a setup in retrospect for that moment. So yeah mixed. Anything hero's journey related, i don't mind being spoiled (since the good guys always win anyway) but yeah, that experience was a 10, i cant imagine it being a 10 had i known what was coming.

If you aren't DIRECTLY spoiling, the "experiment" is almost completely moot, in my opinion. The way it was explained, you simply led the participants to the ending of the book with the prompt beforehand. This is much different than reading information saying, "X character dies at the end of X". I'd also argue the form of media being spoiled, and also what form it's spoiled in, matters quite a lot. I've been spoiled via: text, image, video, audio several times before watching a movie/tv show, and each had different levels of impact on my enjoyment. This may be due to the severity of the spoilers, but that's hard to know/test by myself!

I think the whole “spoiling is a great sin” thing is just cultural inertia. It’s been accepted as rudeness, and so that’s how people register it. That perception is justified after the fact, and not the result of observing one’s experience. Stories are about the characters, dialogue, emotional impact, and lots of things beyond whether or not you’re surprised. It’s silly thing to put such weight on that tiny aspect.
@ShabazzTBL

dustinseth1 No. That was all bull. Don’t like spoilers because I like to learn things when the creator intended me to because it usually changes the way you experience the story. ESPECIALLY if it’s a character death. If you were meant to grow attached to the character their death hurts. But if you knew all along that they die you don’t get as attached because you know it’s coming. Yeah it’s not the worst thing ever but I don’t dislike it simply because culture tells me to.

I'm personally split on spoilers. Although I do enjoy going in to a story blindly. tl;dr - On one hand, don't tell us what is behind the curtains before playing the dramatic music. On the other, meh. Once you know the twist, like if a loving person turns out to be using the protagonist for his/her/xir/whatever benefit, or if someone is about to die or betray someone else, it renders all build-up, suspense, and mystery into padding. It almost makes reading the book/watching the movie or show/playing the game completely unnecessary. That is why I can never motivate myself to watch _Game of Thrones_. Spoilers are even worse when it comes to books that were made decades or centuries ago. "What is the problem with spoiling an old story?" Well I am sorry not everyone can read every book ever made! Sometimes spoilers don't have an affect on the impact of the twist. I knew Veidt was going to teleport a fake alien squid to New York, killing millions and motivating the US and USSR to temporarily band together, in _Watchmen_, but still found the twist fascinating. To this day I don't know why.

In short, spoilers are like a thrilling moment in a horror movie. You KNOW that there's something scary beside that corner, you KNOW THAT. But you still feel the horror at every step of approaching it. Same with spoilers. You know that it will happen, you know that your favorable cherry-loving character will die. Yes posting spoilers does ruin it for other people especially when a TV show episode just came out and people are posting in groups and stuff about it where everybody could see it and then end up ruining me experience for other people you shouldn't post anything about something until it's been out for a week or even a month the fact that people go watch something and post about it right after and expose everything just shows me that they're ignorant and they have no brain up there

I can definitely say that in my experience I tend to enjoy movies more when I haven't had them spoiled vs when I have. Especially when it's a suspense thriller or something of that nature.

A story that depends so much on plot twists that the entire story is ruined because of "spoilers" is just a dumb story. It's one of the weak points of GoT i think. The idea of the plot twist is being milked out, which makes the series boring sometimes. Luckily I like the universe in the series a lot.

I disagree with that a lot, but I don't have anything but rhetoric to back that up. I've had things spoiled for me before and it totally ruined it for me. I love the experience and adrenaline of discovering something in real time. It makes me feel like I'm experiencing it with the characters. I can relate to them and empathize with whatever response they may have to the event. I like to experience media in a way that suspends my own reality. And when I have meta knowledge of the universe in which the story is taking place, I'm removed from it by default. I would relate it to experiencing real-world tragedy as it happens as opposed to reading about the events that happened before I was born. Do those events become any less significant or meaningful just because I didn't experience them? Absolutely not. But there's something different about being part of the world in which it happened. It's the reason our kids will understand that 9/11 was a big deal, but not comprehend the emotion and empathy that those who experienced it know. And as far as the point that someone watching or reading more than once, I don't agree there, either. the first time I experience a story, it solidifies my love for it. I get to experience all those sensations and feelings I previously mentioned. And then the subsequent readings/viewings allow me to appreciate things that I missed while being caught up in the narrative; the subtleties and nuance of character developments and events. I need both the initial experience and the follow-up ones to truly appreciate a story. And I've found that having one and not the other just isn't enough. But those are just my personal experiences. I understand that they don't discredit a study or experiment.
