Fincher tried to give the message of how both ends of the spectrum, brad pitt tyler durden being an essentailly homeless wreck and Norton tyler being a guy stuck in a materialistic lifestyle browsing thorugh ikea catalogues, are both bad. You need to find the balance, not go batshit insane like tyler or be materialistic like tyler.

And lastly, and more tragically, you can see how Marla was having her head fucked with by Tyler/jack without Jack even realizing it. The twist changes everything you thought about Marla.

Nah man it was all over the movie. The fact he decided to pick a fight by hitting and throwing himself around in the presence of his boss and then blaming his injuries on his boss rather than just traditionally picking a fight with someone, getting hit, and losing like every other member of fight club did. The moment when Marla asks who burnt him, “he or she” she says, and Tyler says you talking about me? Yes, Tyler burnt him but Marla couldn’t even guess it was Tyler, because Tyler is him, Tyler is the narrator. I think it’s even more obvious they didn’t give him a name, they just named Tyler which is his second personality. The narrator wasn’t as important to name which is fitting with the movie’s message. What about when Tyler was having sex with Marla and asked the narrator if he wanted to finish her. She responds with who are you talking to? Because the narrator and Tyler are the same person. Marla would get upset all the time during interactions with the narrator, why, was she trying to win his approval despite them being at odds, but he asked what she was doing there, what was her purpose for being there, did it make her happy or something, and she was like fuck off because in reality he’s had sex with her and that’s why she’s there. Plus everyone assumed he knew about project mayhem, like literally the entire time despite him making it obvious that Tyler didn’t loop him in. And the second his friend Bob died, he said no, this isn’t a number, this is a man, said his name, and suddenly everyone in the room decided the next rule of project mayhem was that dead people get a name despite everyone telling him 30 seconds prior that everyone involved in the project had no name. Members aren’t allowed to answer questions, rule 1, we hear this repeatedly and it’s why we and the narrator can’t get anymore information on the project yet the members suddenly tell him all members are classified as numbers? Then the group decides that’s not the case 30 seconds later because the man who doesn’t make the rules decided numbers were immoral? The signs were everywhere. And this is just my first watch.

This movie impacted me deeply. It has really stuck with me after years. I believe I have never been entirely comfortable in my own skin. I am a very anxious person with a tendency to depression and to experience extreme attachment towards certain people. Over a year and a half ago I went to a club high on coke and took MDMA for the first time. I also smoked some weed which at the time and still makes me absurdly paranoid. I was in a really bad place at the time. Long story short, I had the worst bad trip of my entire life and I’ve a had a few. I was with this friend to whom I told every single one of my insecurities among other whacky things like hey we all are autistic, right? Meaning my friend group. This was the morning after btw. Two more of my friends and us were walking towards my friends house. I also thought they were taking me to some kind of initiation for a private group they had. Anyway. I could only talk to him, I have always been drawn towards him cause he seems to be extremely authentic, he’s got character, he’s not particularly attractive but every woman falls for him, he doesn’t give a fuck about so much and at the same time he’s kinda like me. We’re similar in lots of other ways. I’ve always thought he’s me if I decided to start focusing way more on myself and less on everybody else. After we talked the last thing I said to him was. We’re the same person, right? He answered. No, but we can be part of a person. I told him I loved him, he said it back and we hugged for a while. I’m still recovering from that experience, I’m still struggling, but I suppose very slowly I’m becoming more myself, I’m being more serious about myself, I’m gaining a lot of confidence and consciousness. Some times I fall back to my old self, but there’s definitely a change. I guess being on psychotherapy has also helped me. I regret that experience and at the same time I’m grateful it happened. I guess what I’m trying to say is you’re gonna go insane permanently or temporarily if you don’t know who you are, what you feel, why you feel it, if you don’t look back to your childhood. And change is not gonna happen overnight. You gotta fight the behavior patters that you hate, cause you don’t hate yourself. You love your true self, you hate the fear that has taken over you. Believe me. Be patient and choose your self. Always.

At first you go along with the events of the movie like nothing's wrong and sometimes you get a little confused and don't give it enough attention but then you see the twist and then it all hits you in the fucking face. One of the best movies I've ever seen.

Norton's character is Jack. Tyler and Marla don't exist, that is why Tyler told him not to talk to her about him. They are both characters Jack invented to escape his own reality. When he says "I am Jack's sense of rejection". He is telling the audience who is. He also feels rejected by Tyler and he is rejecting his own reality.

One interesting note about this scene is the framing when the Narrator learns the truth. When it cuts back and forth between the two, they're positioned on the same side of the frame. Subtle, but reinforces visually thst they're the same person.

He also pops up when Jack says "with insomnia, nothing is real. Everything is a copy Of a copy. Of a copy." Also when Jack is watching TV and the waiters say "Welcome!" If you look on the right side of the TV, you'll spot Tyler.
