Point fighting is the absolute weakest measure of a fighters spirit. 5point scoring system for black belt level. Still it is ribs groin or head. Sweeps are allowed but only if a point is scored in the process. This is not my isshin-ryu. I carry scars for my art. Point fights are ballet. I was taught better.

Jeremy Hoffman you have to play by the rules, no matter what style you are in. Like it or not. It has been watered down...but my kid lives for this and he has plenty of scars from it as well. He fought 6 fights in February at a Pro MAC Tournament with a torn anterior labrum...he kept pushing through to win Grand Champion. Now he is on month 3 of a 6 month recovery.

Congratulations. Glad to see that Isshinryu still exists. I got my black belt from Allen Wheeler in 1984. I was 17. We trained something back then which I wish to recommend to you. It's natural to swing the arms when you kick. But, there's fighters who will kick you, then stay just inside your range waiting for YOU to kick. If you swing your arms they will find your head wide open. So here's an ooold school move to train the arms not to swing. Get by a bag and set yourself to kick it. Take a karate belt and hold it behind your neck, down low, toward your shoulders. You should bring your hands as close together on the belt as you can, without pulling your head forward. Your arms should be bent at right angle at least. Eventually, you will join your hands behind your head and leave them there, but not at the beginning. Now, round kick the bag with your lead leg. Now, set the kicking foot down next to the other one, and change leads, kicking the bag with the other foot. Kick, foot to foot, kick, foot to foot, kick etc. Go up and down the bag and use all your kicks, with both feet. The rhythm of switching sides I always got a kick out of, haha. What will happen is that the muscles needed to throw the kick without swinging the arms will get stronger, and your arms will stay close to your sides while you kick, and your hands will stay close to your face. Many many many times a quick and skilled opponent was frustrated by my ability to kick at them and my hands, especially the one on the standing leg side, stayed beside my head and intercepted kicks that otherwise would have found my head. Good luck to all you guys. Best wishes.

Does this style actually teach you to lunge at your opponent with no hands up? Because that seems to be what is going on here...

No. These two guys would't even be Dark Green belt in my old Sensei's dojo. They keep dropping their hands about as much as unskilled fighgters. I'm shocked at how bad Isshinryu karate has degenerated in the past 23 years. We used to spar full contact every day in the dojo, now they are doing points sparring for a championship, and if they get in a real fight they get knocked out.

I hate to break it to either of these guys, but I'm a real A.J. Advincula trained black belt in Isshinryu, and I could literally beat both of these guys in a handicap match right now. This is not Isshinryu. This is some half-trained paper black belts.

Absolutely no, this is the result on too much focus on point sparring. It doesn’t look any different from any other system that follows this path. I don’t see any Isshinryu here. I’m from the early 70s, we’d go hard bare knuckles just for in dojo kumite.

@@Pomisher I trained for 200 total seminar hours under GM Advincula and about 4000 total hours under two of his best students, and we did full contact sparring, "As close to no rules as possible" and that was about 1/4th of the training. We did about another 1/4th of the training was kumite and street lethal bunkai and jiu jitsu. About 10% of the trainign was Gracie Jiu Jitsu and how to beat Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Mark tested out of the entire Krav Maga syllabus, which proves Krav Maga is an inferior style to the REAL old-school Isshinryu.

Let me explain how a REAL Isshinryu student is supposed to be training, and this is NOT real Isshinryu anymore. This is not what Tasuo Shimabuku and his best students taught. TRADITIONAL ADULTS CLASS: (two hours session) 10 minutes basics reps and warms ups 30 minutes kata 30 minutes bunkai of kata 20 minutes or so "Kumite" and submissions 30 minutes FULL CONTACT sparring with only contact rules being No Biting, no throat jab, and no eye gouges. About 3 times per month, my old Sensei would teach Gracie Jiu Jitsu and how to BEAT Gracie Jiu Jitsu for about 30 minutes per class instead of the traditional Isshinryu submissions, since he had a black belt in Gracie Jiu Jitsu too. I learned over 200 submissions from Mark and Advincula over the years, AND I was the best striker in the dojo other than Mark. I would absolutely curb stomp any 2, 3, or maybe even FOUR of your black belts simultaneously in old school isshinryu sparring rules in a HANDICAP MATCH.

Would you ever introduce your kid to a full contact fighting sport? Perhaps he would be interested to know how strong and tough he can become when it matters most.

He is actually trained in several martial arts, including Krav Maga. He is a beast now at 6ft 3inches and weighs over 220. This video is several years old and he was still in the Black Belt Junior Division. I certainly believe with everything in me that he is a force to be reckoned with in a ring or if he needed to be on the street. But no, I would not like to see him in an MMA Fight. There is a place for that for other people, but I like his ears the way they are. He can however crack ribs through kick pads with his kicks. He has trained Continuous Fighting as well as Muay Thai. So there’s that.

Marvin L Garrett I agree that it’s definitely different than it was in the past. These kids however, train just as hard as you all did. Its hard to control your kicks and punches, and even more so when emotions are running rampant. The kid in the black gi, you’ll see him representing the USA one day. Maybe you will be kind enough to support him then.
