Armored Core 6 Review - A Mecha Masterpiece

Thanks to Bandai Namco for a review copy of Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon!
Based on the knowledge gained during joint development of their recent titles, Bandai Namco Entertainment and FromSoftware seek to deliver a new action game. By combining FromSoftware’s longstanding expertise in mech games and their signature robust gameplay, ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON will be a new action experience.
In ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON, players will assemble and pilot their own mech with 3D maneuverability to move freely through three dimensional fast-paced missions. Take on difficult challenges and overwhelm your enemies with dynamic movements that make full use of ranged and melee combat. Players can enjoy a variety of actions that can only be truly realized with mechs.
A mysterious new substance was discovered on the remote planet, Rubicon 3. As an energy source, this substance was expected to dramatically advance humanity’s technological and communications capabilities. Instead, this substance caused a catastrophe that engulfed the planet and the surrounding stars in flames and storms, forming a Burning Star System.
Almost half a century later, the same substance resurfaced on Rubicon 3, a planet now contaminated and sealed off by the catastrophe.
Extra-terrestrial corporations and resistance groups fight over control of the substance. The player infiltrates Rubicon as an independent mercenary and finds themself in a struggle over the substance with the corporations and other factions.

Never played an AC game myself before this and yeah. I got the second pistol, the really long one and it works so well with my build. I'm running the full Nachtreir (or however you spell it) for body with the pistol, laser dagger, right shoulder grenade launcher, and left shoulder plasma missiles and it's nuts. I'm so fast that almost 99% of enemies can't hit me and I dish out so much damage.

Dual miniguns on a beef build is kind of wild, throw on like a shoulder grenade launcher and some other big damage weapon then just stagger things in like 3 seconds with the MGs and then unload the big shoulders for direct hits. I have REALLY been enjoying a lightweight super fast/agile build with double shotties and double SMGs using weapons bays. Oh and a close range FCS obviously... You use your speed / agility to just bounce around very close to your target and most things that aren't also a fast agile build can't really deal with it.

Arms have always been more important than just extra armor. They also affected the efficiency of energy weapons, the delay between when your FCS targeted an enemy and when your weapons actually pointed at it, recoil control, and of course, the weight of the weapons you could carry.

I was kinda skeptical about the game but it’s so fun. The combat is very satisfying and fast paced. Plus the range of attachments and weapons is insane. Sure it’s difficult but the difficulty makes it that much more rewarding.

Honestly, as a new player, I'm glad to see how insanely new player friendly it is. You never see that in a fromsoftware game, when I tried ds3, it was so shit cause I kept getting lost and all that, and it's impossible to know what to do, but in this game, you jump on in, instantly learn the controls, it tells you ever little thing of what to do, and requires 0 skill, your just good to go! 😁👌 10/10 game imo.

I've never played AC and have never really been into mech suit type games besides titanfall (if that counts) so I planned on passing this one up even though the gameplay looked pretty solid. fast forward to tonight and I tried it out on my buddies account until I got through the first boss, did some customizing, a couple ch.1 missions and instantly bought it. Fromsoftware never disappoints man they just know how to make great games every single one. I know cringe but I have always wanted to play this game and never was able to being poor growing up. I had the $ so I didn’t want to miss out on anything. I never played any Armored Core game, nor had any interested in playing them. Until this one came out, and I finally decided to check up one of Cowboy's videos. His enthusiasm and love for the game, and then the gameplay made me excited. Now I just watch every single video just to keep the hype going. I'm really liking what I'm seeing and, if things go well, I think starting with this one will be a great start to the franchise!

EDIT: Yes, you can craft the craziest build and make it viable. Just know what weapons you equip and what synergy they have. Such a magnificent game.

@@joevaghn457 Thanks for the info. I want to try a tank and a back leg build, so I don't mind changing weapons as long as I can use those leg types. Of course I'll spend a lot of time in the garage with the other two leg types. Any other advice would be more than helpful.

I doubt that every possible combination of parts will be viable. I think every part needs to have a purpose and be reasonably balanced. Since the game allows for such customization, it will probably be possible to make stupid choices. I have not been able to test the game, but I assume that a build that is too heavy for its legs, and has arms for melee weapons, while using guns would be garbage.

@@enman009 I've only played the PS1 games, so my knowledge kinda is lacking, but from what I remember, those games had situations where a specific "class" or type of body part was more *optimal* to use than another. For example, there's a mission where you go underground to plant bombs in a corrosive gas filled area, and quadrupedal legs were better than any other leg, where bipeds and reverse joints were doable, but tank legs would absolutely get you killed no matter what you tried (you'd be too slow to make it to the first bomb site). I'd personally recommend just experimenting. You can also go the stubborn route and stick with one build for the entire game, and who knows, sometimes you discover interesting strategies for completing missions that many others would miss because they were going PoLR the who game.

I'm going to end up with so many builds with how easy they make it to customize things. A build for kinetic, energy, shock and fire weapons, one build for each leg type, one build for each weight class, a build using all the parts I just think look cool, a build that uses dual shoulder weapons and one that uses all 4 hand weapons instead. SO many possibilities.

Agree on the visuals comments. I’ve never understood this. And it doesn’t help that even people who love these games seem to always add a qualifier like ‘the visuals aren’t top shelf… but… the gameplay is incredible’. FS titles are striking. Full stop. It’s kind of insane that their art team has remained so consistent for over 15 years now, within multiple settings and time periods. Art style is always priority. The world building, attention to detail, and ambience is unmatched. You feel like you’re in these worlds. And they are instantly recognizable. Everything feels hand crafted. Even a game like Ghost of Tsushima, that reuses a lot of assets and blander architecture, has incredible art style and tone, and that’s what sells that world as well. FS titles are some of the most beautiful in the industry. And I’m still baffled at how anyone can see this stuff and think otherwise.

Armored Core 6 is the ultimate mecha porn. Fell in love right after a few minutes. This game is the perfect translation of epic mecha fights fantasized on with anime. The feeling (weight, inertia) and animations of the mecha is a mecha lover's dream come true. Replayability is thrilling. Replaying a mission with a different mecha setup is game changing. Cowboy, awesome review as always. I just want to add as I didn't hear it in the video, for others, that the build customization allows you to buy and sell parts for the same price. Maybe this was the same in other AC games, but I'm newcomer and this was pleasant surprise. So I can just try whatever weapon is available without fear of not liking it and losing my money.

Best year for gaming. Chefs kiss if we get Elden Ring DLC in Nov or Dec. It is a 10/10 game for me. I lost track time coloring and building mechs. I am like trying to build as many as I can. Unlocking Arena made it even funner. The controls are the smoothest I have ever felt playing the early ones.

It would be awesome if you could upload a certain file type of a decal/graphic/logo you made into the game and then useable on your mech. However it’s awesome you can at least create something custom within game but it would be cool to see the ability to upload something you’ve already made outside of the game like your fightin cowboy logo or what not.

I wish for that too, but unfortunately companies won't do it because they fear legal problems thanks to that tiny amount of assholes using those features to upload porn or outright illegal shit in some rare cases.

Definitely hooked on this game. Flows so nice and very satisfying to whoop some ass. Bosses can be frustrating but there are plenty of builds you can make you can pull up before hand. Excellent review cowboy! Love your content

I am new to the mecha genre but also fromsoftware soulsborne veteran. I am having a blast in Armored core fires of Rubicon. However, one thing i dont like THE MISSSIONS AND THIER LENGTHS. i would love to see armored core as a semi open world like dark souls games.

I don’t think any other FromSoftware game has divided the fans this much. I haven’t seen much middle ground. It’s either a masterpiece or it’s trash. I just finished the tutorial boss after about 20 attempts. I’ll be honest. I didn’t find it fun or intuitive. Combat felt disorienting and sloppy. It was hard for me to realize what exactly the enemy was throwing at me and when. I refused to give up and finally blew up that damn helicopter. I’m still looking forward to experiencing more. I think many are giving up too quickly. So many games start off slow that turn out to be great experiences.
