Great vid. I am going to show it to new firefighters. A great example of how effective aircraft are and the importance of ground crews being aware of aircraft. Very professional in spotting the ground crews and working with them to achieve a great outcome. As a firefighter (VIC) on the ground, it is always a welcoming sight to see/hear a Helitak knowing how competent the crews are and their concern for my safety.

I'm surprised they used helicopters on such a small fire. Isn't a fire of that size something that can be dealt with by ground units without air support?

I remember this day very well and the additional stress this fire caused being so close to homes! but all my contingency planning was for naught as the second your machines turned up it seemed the fire was out as sooner then it started. I live between Jandakot and the Perth hills regularly get helitaks flying over to do their thing. I really aught to get my scanner out one day and see if I can tune in, the radio chatter was really interesting. I could see at least 4 radios there, I think a GME and a Tait, worked on both of them. being more domestic radios, Id imagine they are for communicating with the ground crew? for comms between the 3 choppers, are they just standard air band channels or do you have a private allocation? does anyone have any pointers on what frequencies to poke around on? Hey dude, to fight fires in Aus you need 1500 total time, and 100 on type (or similar). So usually you would start off building hours doing some other job before trying to get into the utility side of things. For me, it was tourism, I did that for 4 years before I got to put on bucket

FYI: HeliTak are firefighting attack choppers. FireBirds (what you were for vid) are aerial observers. Good video though, been working under and withthose birds before (430 & 425).
@adrianpetrie49919 ай бұрын
Fyi, both helitacks and Firebirds can be water bombing aircraft, the video is of the air attack supervisor platform who communicates with both ground crews and water bombing aircraft Which was Firebird 742.... Above them was the air observer platform providing all the Intel back to the IMT... 😉
@bentheguru49869 ай бұрын
@@adrianpetrie4991 When we call for firebirds or birddogs, we want eyes in the sky. Yes, some firebirds can hook on a bambi but when they only moving hundreds of litres each drop, not much good. Years of expirience teaches that. Here in this video, there was no coordination with grounds and no IMT. Rural crew first on scene followed by a urban when the job was nearly done. There was certainly no-one above 742.
@bushpiloting9 ай бұрын
Hey ben. There was plenty of comms with the crews on the ground, just not by me, but by the fella with the white helmet. I just had those radios muted for me, (which is what the video audio picks up,) because it's unnecessary noise and clutter that i don't need to deal with. I would just liaise with other aircraft and tower.

@@bushpiloting Yeah, going on what you aired on vid. As for the job, was only a little one, ones I am used to are orders of magnitude bigger.
