The sheer number of racist, sexist, and objectifying comments on this video disgusts me. This is not just a feminist issue. This is a human rights issue. She's saying things you don't like to hear, and in reaction, people are throwing in red herrings and objectifying her based on her appearance. It concerns me that so many people are commenting that Asian women are hot, so it's expected that they'll be harassed--that you would do the same if you were to see her. Take a step back and consider your reaction, and why you react in that way. Decide if that's the kind of person you want to be.

Those who try to deny the facts and alter her message are either completely unaware of the reality here or simply chose to advocate the culture of silence toward crimes against women that she so eloquently describes. Ikumi Yoshimatsu's online public petition on Change.org broke ALL previous records in Japan and closed out after more than 130,000 signatures in just a couple weeks. Her story was the 4th most read story in the Daily Beast when it came out and even trended on redditt! She spelled out in detail how laws must change in Japan to implement immediate protection for victims of stalking. And that the legal definition of "stalking" in Japan must be uniform with international standards and not limited to "previous romantic involvement" like she points out in her talk. Since she has spoken out, many women are coming forward and the issues that have long been hidden are now being exposed. The reason her talk is in English, not Japanese, is because TED is an international platform... Not limited to just Japan. Like her Change.org petition, this issue is important for victims of stalking all over the world.

lol you guys are so FUNNY! comments like " I THOUGHT JAPAN WAS SO ADVANCED!" etc I live in Japan as an American. If a woman is raped here, sometimes the police say that they should forget it and if they file a report, it could send the offender to jail. I have seen some of them sexually assaulted on the train and they just close their eyes and say stop it or some just freeze. I am a taller and bigger woman so I was able to help etc. Stalking here is really bad lol Japan is like 100 years behind the usa when it comes to women's rights. However, for power harassment here, MEN AND WOMEN SUFFER BECAUSE OF IT. Japan is a bullying nation and it is hard to combat it because it is all in the head. They are masters at not confronting their adversaries. It is hard for us westerners to comprehend the bullying here because we confront assholes. Here, assholes have a lot of power. I have to pay 5000 dollars because my previous boss got angry with me for wanting to leave and demanded I pay. If i dont pay, they will call my current job and cause problems. They even demanded I tell them where I live and I had to tell them that because they were going to blackmail me. I just feel like going home but i need to save up to take my pets with me.

Stalking is a problem for BOTH men and women, we're both humans and so both capable of terrible things, and it happens all over the world in EVERY country. There needs to be more of a awareness to this issue and a different handling of this issue. The police having the stalker sign a letter that they will stop and also restraining orders, are just a piece of paper. It may work for some but not all. And if they do serve time for stalking and violating a restraining order it is not only short time but can make some stalkers more violent towards the victim who put them away. There needs to be more done like some sort of rehabilitation for them. Something needs change to help not only the victim but also the stalker as well like maybe some type of in or out patient program. Some sort of counseling at least. There's those who stalk after a unwanted break up, divorce, someone they feel wronged them, or even someone they don't even personally know. Like how some ex girlfriends not stalking their ex but their boyfriend's new girlfriend like it's vengeance. And the internet now aids them especially stuff like social media. If there was a bigger consequence of stalking but also some sort of rehab type of therapy type program to help once it's made known to police of the stalking and throughout, it could help. There was a husband who was "seeing red" when his wife had left and served him divorce papers because of abuse, but before he could go through with a murder suicide he got help with programs like STEP he visited that helped the husband to see it in all in a different light and realize her claims of abuse were true in that he realized he was mentally abusive with yelling, threatening and throwing items from stress from work. And most importantly he realized he was a stalker. Something lots of who don't realize. but this organization helped him and other people. So I think that the law in all Countries should have some sort of mandatory type of therapy or something. But when there's not much the police can do or will do some victims hire a private investigation type security teams. Sadly Victims hire them when they feel helpless in that the police and justice system can't help or can do much to help them. Again stalking can happen to both MALES and females, and in EVERY country. We need to address this problem because people are either living in fear, murdered, or suicide to escape their problem.

I never realized this was an issue in Japan. Me being obsessed with anime and Japan culture in general blinded me. I always thought there was a lower crime rate in Japan as people don't really steal there. While this may or may not be true, I see now how Japan is definitely behind America in womens rights. Honestly radical feminists in America annoy me because they're focusing on issues that are so minor while there are just normal cases of rape in Japan that go unnoticed or child brides in a bunch of countries. But no, we have to worry about "mansplaining" and catcalling. While those are problems (well mansplaining isn't, usually that is just a man literally telling an sjw a fact and she doesn't understand), other countries need WAY more help than America.

It's obvious to everyone in Japan that she did get something in return for the apology (perhaps a restraining order) but that the Japanese court system simply does not want to open the flood gates of change for female victims of stalking and harassment. I don't think that anyone (other than you and your friend) really think that ANYTHING was her fault. That's called "victim blaming" and its an outdated concept.

I think it's combination of traditional Japanese values with a harsh working environment, sadly someone has to suffer when everyone is forced into those conditions. Also what is stalking exactly? (As a crime). By definition it just means to sneak up on someone
@Pure_KodiakWILD_Power9 жыл бұрын
+Smiles the crime of stalking is to follow, harrass & intimidate a person, or invade their privacy against their will or wishes. she talks more about it after 7.20. stalking in nature is not just to sneak up on prey, it is to watch, follow, & wait for the opportunity to attack.

Although she states that there was not enough evidence to prove her allegations in court, the overwhelming amount of evidence is well documented in several articles in Japanese magazines such as Shukan Bunshun.

she's telling a long ass story before getting to the point, i thought this talk would be more direct. she's trying a bit too hard to be emotional in her speech , message may be god but delivery isn't.

+Bago Garde I don't think English is her native language. And I don't think that "delivery" is the point of her talk either. As for her emotion... She sounds VERY strong for a Japanese woman... but then again, she was the first Japanese ever to win the Miss International title.

how can she guarantee that "protection" will not become privilege? there is no way she can. ;) she want priviledge, I don't have to be gentlemen anymore. >:)

I'm going to assume you are from the west. Do you even know what equal protection is and why it is important? Do you know what it is like to live without it in a world where the circumstances of your birth dictate your access to justice? She isn't talking about getting extra bennies at her job or forced wage equalization. She's talking about the right to live free of sexual assault and rape. That if someone does commit such a heinous crime, they receive punishment fitting it. How about we protect their rights as human beings first and worry about whether or not those protections will go to far later?

you need help. putting aside the 'all they did ' for 15 minutes remark, let's reverse it. some old, fat smelly woman forces you to have sex with her. in the process, she gives you numerous STDs that plague you the rest of your life, if not kill you. men are lucky they don't get pregnant and have to deal with that little aftermath. old fat woman says, 'stop crying, it was only sex'. don't tell me you don't have women in your family that you care about and if this happened to them it wouldn't be a problem we need less people like you on this planet. that b.s. about looking at women is considered sexual ssault. you're delusional in your ignorance and arrogance.
@maggiemoran77478 жыл бұрын
you have privilege and demand respect too but say that women are not allowed the same. you sound like elliot rodgers and look what happened to him. fingers crossed.

She is talking about a specific thing. Your complaint is that she seems to have forgotten something that she wasn't speaking about? How do you expect that she will cover everything in the whole world? Better to focus on what she wanted to talk about.

Read the Holy Quran that will protect you :O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad): that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Alahzab varses, Ayah59

So women completely covered is instinct is it? So care to explain why the majority of the world goes against its "instinct". Or why such behaviour goes against our actual instinct, y'know taking clothes off when its hot and putting clothes on when its cold. You cannot call a cultural artifact "instinct".
