Came for the music; stayed for the costumes and choreography. An amazing spectacle. In battle scenes, do female characters participate in the combat?

Certainly! One of the characters in Miyajima no Danmari is lady Suke no Tsubone (who also has an important role in act II of Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura), and in Otowa-ga-Dake Danmari there are four female characters, each from a different role type.

Is that a bull costume I see at 6:27 and 6:51 (at far right of picture)? What is the bull's function in "Ichihara no Danmari"? I love all doubutsuburi, but I've never seen this one!

That's right! Kidōmaru enters the stage "disguised as an ox" and attacks Yasumasa, before his identity is quickly revealed. I'm sure it made sense in the original context, but I haven't read anything that would explain it!
