Fighting Regiments of War of Rights - 1st Louisiana Zouaves

The 1st Louisiana Zouave Battalion is a combination of 2 unique confederate zouave battalions, Coppens’ Zouaves and Wheat’s Tigers, both infamous known for their outlandish behavior in camp and zealous appetite for battle. Both were raised from the roughest of New Orleans society, men accustom to hard work and heavy drinking. Both of these battalions would take extreme losses due to their hard fighting in the previous campaigns and would be merged for the upcoming Maryland Campaign.
At the battle of antietam, the men of the 1st Louisiana Zouave Battalion would be led by Captain Marie Alfred Coppens. Their battalion would be attached to the 2nd Louisiana Brigade under the command of Brigadier General William E. Starke who was rushed to the west side of the hagerstown turnpike to stop the attack of the Federal Western Iron Brigade. The louisianans would fight hard but would be pushed back after taking extreme casualties, with only 12 men fit for duty the next day.

zouaves are a french army corps since 1830,created in algeria , the first battalion of zouaves fought at the battle of seven days,antietam etc...600 men,after the battle of sevenss days they had been incorporeted in the coppens zouave group,the louisiana state university (the tigers) keep the same name,excuse my english,an ancient soldier of the 5th armour brigade french army

@@br_u_u_klyn bonjour,excuse my englis,the zouave corps were created 1831 with the colonial occupation of algeria,by the first time it was a kabyle tribe calling zwazwa allied with french but the french call them zouave(frenchisism)there were the first battalions of zouaves,later there were only french since 1942,there is not historical french zouave translations in english so i send you the right document in french ,may be you ll' can translate this one in english and all yours questions about zouaves ll'have an answer, good confinement...collectifrance40.free.fr/index.php/france40/histoire/les-zouaves-des-origines-a-1940

Very cool, but I have to make a call-out. The Coppens Zouaves wore RED Trim on their Jackets, Not Yellow as evidenced by period photos and accounts. There's another regiment, the 13th Louisiana, who had companies from New Orleans that were dressed in Zouave uniforms that had Gold (yellow?) lace on their jackets which are described in several period accounts. They were known as the Avegno Zouaves, or the "Governor's Guard". There is an oil painting of a Zouave in the collection of the West Point Museum that is of a "New Orleans Zouave" by Enoch Perry. I believe this was an Avegno Zouave. The more I research these units, It seems that the Avegno Zouaves are being mistaken, or mixed-up for the Coppens', which is an understandable.
