How you know the narrator is winging it, the first kata being demonstrated is not Mae. It’s Yaegaki Ura (Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu) also known as Yaktai Inyoshintai (Muso Shinden Ryu). In no way could that be confused with Mae by someone familiar with Iaido.

That phone call in the middle of their recording session was amazing. "Should we do the take again?" "No no, I'm on a roll, Gerald!"

That colonial British accent (and commentary) is as much a historical glimpse into ancient UK, as the footage is into ancient Japan:-D

Prince, you are mistaken, these form were practiced before the Meiji restoration, so they actualy WERE used by the samurais to train (look up Hasegawa Eishin Ryu, which is being demonstrated here as part of thr Muso Shinden). But you are right, it is a nice video!

The only thing the Meiji Rwatoration did was formally allow the Samurai class to accept the fact Kenjutsu was no longer a practical art at the time of peace so for the sake of conservation, culture, and practice it was broken up into Iaijutsu and Kendo.
