John Maitland’s skilfully executed oil and acrylic paintings are informed by figurative expressionism and imbued with rigorous colour and texture to denote emotive nuance. The work achieves poignancy through a unique perspective which resonates throughout his cohesive presentation.
Drawing on inspiration from visits to the European galleries John has completed several works reflecting his fascination with the classical sculptures. These influences were the foundation of the highly acclaimed Grafton Regional Gallery Exhibition where two pieces were acquired for the permanent collection.
“Executing broad strokes with a pigment loaded brush, sometimes swishing back and forth with a contrasting colour to react with the subject matter in a discordant fashion, I begin to create an experience for the viewer. I avoid photographic representations in my work, preferring to allow colour, distortion and texture to evoke a response.
The process often reminds me of the total experience of listening to U2 and Pavarotti doing Miss Sarajevo. From the contrasts in key and style emerges a scintillating discord so beautiful it leaves me breathless. This is the type of experience I'm always looking to evoke in my work.”
Margaret Campbell-Ryder was born and educated in Bendigo and Rochester in Victoria, but has been a Queenslander now for the past 50 years, and lives in a traditional 1920’s Queenslander in the inner city of Brisbane.
Margaret and her late husband Graham jointly own and operate the Red Hill Gallery in Brisbane which they acquired in November 1998. In 2004 they established and opened their second Gallery- Emporium Gallery of fine arts - which was in Fortitude Valley. Red Hill Gallery is recognised as one of Brisbane’s leading Art Galleries.
Margaret manages Red Hill Gallery on a day-to-day basis with her five art consultants. She is also responsible for establishing the program of Exhibitions, hanging and marketing them on a monthly basis.
