Wonderful review. Much appreciated. What reviewers rarely mention is ease of compatibility with powered speakers. The K9 is a full desktop solution and full includes speakers. I just received mine and its connected to iLoud Micro Monitors. The one complaint I have is the sound initiation lag through USB. Its a second or two at most, but every time a source changes (even between videos on KZbin) there is an initial silence before the audio kicks in. No delays in video, just sound. Never experienced that before with other devices.

That's really interesting. I didn't have it hooked up like that because I was focussed on its audio performance. I wonder if there are any settings available via the app that could be causing that.

Walked out of a shop with a K9 Pro today with the intention of picking up a Burson C3P. I never got to listen to the Burson as the guys seemed pretty disinterested in it and we meant towards other units, and I’m absolutely stoked I walked away with the K9 Pro. @@PassionforSound just wondering what your take is on some amps (and headphones) being more prone to cause tinnitus than others? I swear I dont have it turned up to unsafe levels but I seem to have more tinnitus than I ever have in the past week with the K9. I use them at work for a number of hours each day. I’m powering my Aeon Noire’s with them and listen to mostly music scores, a bit of other classical, and some pop. I had read a comment someone made about another amp causing them to have tinnitus but just thought they were imagining it - now I’m wondering if it’s a thing. Either that or I did have it turned up too much for too long. It’s my first set of cans, so maybe it’s something I’m not used to? Anyway would love to hear input from someone who’s listened to a few amps and headphones in their time!
@dan110024 Жыл бұрын
Just did some reading. Im thinking it’s likely that the low distortion of the gear allows you to listen to it at higher volumes without realising. Also the brightness of the Noire’s probably doesn’t help
@PassionforSound Жыл бұрын
I can definitely help as someone who suffers from tinnitus sometimes and who's discussed this with a friend and patron who has the same troubles. It's more likely the headphones than the amp causing this problem I think (I'm trained in human hearing, but not a practicing professional). Are the headphones also new or have you used them before on other systems without issue? Depending on the answer to the question above, my experiences are that certain treble peaks can aggravate the ear and trigger tinnitus - this will depend on your specific sensitivity to different frequencies so it's difficult to predict and requires some trial and error. This is likely most affected by the headphones rather than the amp. Where the amp could come into play is in the character of the sound it delivers. If it's triggering your ears' natural protection system (the stapedius reflex) due to any perceived harshness and fatigue then that could potentially play a part too. Unfortunately, tinnitus isn't particularly well understood and has many possible causes. Let me know if the headphones are new or just the amp and we can maybe chat a little further (not that I can provide medical advice).
@PassionforSound Жыл бұрын
That's possible (on both counts). Maybe try the thicker inner filters on the Noires and see if that helps. Beyond that, just be careful with your hearing and see if quieter listening can also improve things.

The E50 is a brilliant DAC and definitely sounds different for many other DACs. It's true that some DACs are almost indistinguishable (I've called this out in a few reviews lately when I honestly don't think I could pick them blind), but it's not always the case. The E50 is a standout to me for sound quality. That said, the L50 is a bit lacking in dynamics and would likely keep the E50/L50 stack from matching the K9 Pro I think (I haven't compared them and don't have time right now to offer that comparison). If you were happy mixing and matching styles and getting the right cables, I'd expect the E50 and Geshelli E2 to be a better setup than the K9 Pro, but at that point you're getting into some serious hassles for cabling and also missing out on some of the K9 Pro's features.

For a slight difference not even worth double the price of the Topping DX5. I think the better choice would be the Topping E50 with the SABAJ A10h Desktop Headphone Amplifier if having sensitive headphones. If your headphones are more demanding, then go with the L50 headphone amp....much better bargain. Things are getting much more pricy, and getting less for your money lately. $800-$900 is not exactly a budget device. This would be budget priced if you are fairly wealthy. Most people can not afford to spend $800-$900 just to get a headphone amp combo. Ty for the review though, your appreciated.

Great review. I still would have liked even just a short mention on differenced between digital inputs. As for the product, I am disappointed at the limitation of the digital inputs, the DAC implementation, the SE output (only just a bit). For the 850$ requested price, I think it's not worth it unless you are severely space limited and cannot go with a dac+amp stack. The 200$ Soncoz GD1 and any ~400$ THX AMP would probably be better.

Sorry I couldn't cover the input quality as well - just so much to cover in this one. As for the quality vs a stack, it's rare that a similar priced stack won't outperform an all-in-one because each device in a stack has it's own power supply, etc. but then you'll also need interconnects and two power cables so it can get messy. I like stacks more in most cases, but there's no denying the convenience of an all-in-one like the K9 Pro.

Hi Lachlan, very good review as always! Did your hear this ECM album by any chance? HAFLA by JON BALKE, SIWAN. It is so good and well recorded, amazing micro dynamic and tone! Great for testing dac in my opinion. If all album sounded like that, the eq on the mojo 2 wood be totally useless :) P.s. Your mic sound less good than usual. It seems that it is getting more room reflection especially in the Lo mid. Maybe to much omni directional...

I've been looking for a desktop all in one for a while and this looks really interesting. Curious if you plan on doing a review of the JDS Labs Element 3 and how would compare to something like this? Thanks for the reviews.
@PassionforSound2 жыл бұрын
I don't have a contact to get JDS Labs gear unfortunately so no current plans there. There's no doubt they make great gear, but my past experience suggests that the Element 3 probably competes more with the tier down like the Topping DX5. That said, the sonic differences are small and a lot of the K9 Pro's value is in the features, balanced capability and power.

I too have the AKM version and find it quite competent at it's price point with many headphones but not all. I find that using the K9 Pro DAC can drive the Focal Stellia to satisfactory and enjoyable listening levels, but not the Focal Utopia as there is just a lack of synergy. Not unexpectedly it cannot match the musicality of my (for now reference) combo of an RME ADI-2 DAC and Felicks Audio Euforia with the Utopia or Stellia. But I am happy to report that in the last couple of days I just received the Helm Audio Bolt and the DB12 AAAMP mobile headphone amp ($179.99 USD for both) and using it with my iPhone and Apple Music and Tidal along with the Stellia & Campfire Audio Solaris 2020 (without the DB 12) and it easily sounds better to my ears than the K9 Pro. If you get a chance to audition it I would suggest you give it a try.
@PassionforSound2 жыл бұрын
I'd definitely like to try the Helm audio gear at some point and I completely agree that the K9 Pro isn't a setup I'd recommend for high end headphone listening. Having enough power is one thing and, for an all-in-one, it sounds good, but TOTL headphones like the Utopia often need a specific sound and character in the source chain to sound their best. The K9 Pro, to me, suits warmer cans a bit better and also isn't the last word in sonic bliss (and shouldn't be expected to be at its price 🙂)

@@PassionforSound I currently run a Schiit Hel2 DAC. It connects via USB C from my laptop with a Wireworld Starlight 8 USB 3.1 cable.. USB C isn't restricted to phones and tablets. To be fair. ... Your review doesn't exist for you... Unless I'm wrong. I think I can safely assume though that you made this video for others. It is after all, posted on a public platform. A prominent selling point for someone might just be in knowing about the USB C input. In my case, for examples, with my expensive USB cable... It would be nice to know if I will be able to use it with this device vs "needing" to buy a different cable. You finding it to be redundant because of your usage scenario doesn't really align with why the video review exists. If this video is to be of service to others... It makes sense to address all the avaliable options and address the possible usage scenarios of your audience. Nobody talking about he USB C input in any review isn't helpful in creating informed consumers. I'm actually shocked that nobody has covered it. Some have failed to even point out it exists as an option. That's hitting the OCD buttons kind of hard I'll admit.
@PassionforSound2 жыл бұрын
As I said in my first response, you have a fair point. It's very easy to miss talking about that socket during a "tour" of the device because of its location. On top of that, I tend to focus my reviews on the usability and sound quality of the devices rather than the things that can be read on a retailer or manufacturer web page. I do try to cover of the inputs and outputs, but it's not a point of emphasis for me because it's all available elsewhere and I like to dedicate the limited time for each video on the things you can't glean from a webpage.

i think companion apps are a big deal, not only is the UI more comfortable, remote and easily upgradable, it also simplifies the hardware, fewer buttons, no screens, not only a lower cost, but maybe even improved sound ? frankly i don’t see why constructors, like RME for example, or, much worse, chord, which their clownish and expensive UI don’t just use apps instead, i doubt anyone buying a chord huge tt2 doesn’t own an app, oh and chord, i can make an app for u, for the price of your next generation Dave :) (all resemblance with a real contract is false) get some app devs working on this, we might even be able to decide on a standard that will pilot any hardware. oh and finally, hardware builders would be able to offer many more parameters, for almost no cost, because it would not involve any more hardware. i find it hard to understand why audio products still have buttons to be honest, except the volume control
@PassionforSound Жыл бұрын
I think the easiest answer to why products still have buttons are all the people like me, Martjin. If you're sitting away from the unit, having an app makes complete sense, but if you're a desktop listener like me then you want the buttons at your fingertips and not having to reach for a remote or an app all the time. 🙂

@PassionforSound2 жыл бұрын
I think it all comes down to expectations and price. I agree that AKM, ESS, Cirrus, etc. chips are all a limiting factor in modern DACs, but based on the price and what else you can buy for the same money, the K9 is pretty great.
@nitraM321 Жыл бұрын
ok, so, i have one problem with the way you, and many others raté product, i think you should NEVER take price into account, if u do,u make many products appear equally great, when they clearly aren’t. even better would be if u had a ladder, and place the products at a spot in their ladder/ranking. the current way all of you do things makes it really hard to choose a product at a given price, because some 100€ product might sound so extraordinary in your review. think about it, and please send me the discord invite :) i would introduce a rating vs some representative headphones, or speakers, different technologies, hard, or easy to drive, susvara’, susvara’s and susvara’s :) oh and some speakers or amps, anything you have really, maybe someone should make a web site for that, right ? because without that all this information is just confusing i me a HOW am i supposed to chose between the Burson, KME, Ifi sigs, ferrum (try to text them) etc ? sounds like this one is better, and u clearly don’t mean that !
@PassionforSound Жыл бұрын
That argument cuts both ways, Martjin. If we rate it without considering price then it sounds like cheap gear is just as good as expensive gear and that's normally not the case. I think the best balance point is to provide comparisons with similar priced options, sometimes an option above or below in price and to discuss the unit's overall value for money rather than ignore price altogether.

This is an interesting topic and I'm still trying to get clarity on it myself. On one hand, the radiation used to transmit signals is at a lower frequency than visible light and therefore has less heating power as I understand it. Having said that, there is some evidence that people sleep better when electromagnetic radiation is minimised so it's probably doing something to the body. I'm still unconvinced in either direction on this one.
