Things I forgot to mention: I didn't have a DLNA server to test with. Spotify and a few other apps are whitelisted to use. S/PDIF output works fine to a Mojo and xDSD (tested just now). USB DAC mode has a slight delay so watching videos/movies the audio isn't in sync. Someone reported an issue with LAME-encoded MP3s with the current firmware. Update: I've had issues with dropouts with TIDAL playback when using Bluetooth transmission.

"USB DAC mode has a slight delay so watching videos/movies the audio isn't in sync" - this is ... at best, at best, very mildly put, as that "slight" delay ... makes it practically unusable as an USB DAC, literally it's a horror experience and nobody, in any review... nobody mentions this; I have a M9 and I am so so pissed every time I remember this crap of a bug that Fiio just won't fix (people are complaining on their forum for about two years and no fix came) because I bought it 70% for the DAC capabilities and 30% for the DAP ones. 300$ ... it's a real sham until they really fix this issue. Until then, please ... don't buy it! It's not worth it.
@MasqueradePW4 жыл бұрын
@@georgecrisan8446 Howdy, not sure if you're still using your M9 or struggling with the USB DAC feature but there's a way of reducing the delay. All you have to do is go into your windows settings and increase your audio quality, I keep my M6 running with 24bit/192kHz. Then you want to go into the USB DAC application from Fiio and reduce the buffer to be as small as you're comfortable with, I keep my buffer at 16 samples and it reduces the latency to the point where it's only barely noticeable at the worst of times. Somebody somewhere claimed this might require a fairly powerful CPU but I've yet to see any increase in CPU usage on my little 2015 laptop. Hopefully this helps!

I just purchased this after watching your review. Been looking for a cheap(ish) dap for a while that will do digital out, as I want to use it as a digital source for my mojo. My Galaxy Note 4 is really bad as a digital source; it produces lots of noise, hopefully the fiio will be better. I also got a bit greedy and ordered Fiio FH5 at the same time. Oops.

Let us know how it goes.

@@Currawong The FH5s sound lovely plugged into the mojo, very happy with those, my first pair of nice IEMs. I thought they lacked bass at first because I tried them with the large balanced tips and they wouldn't form a seal because they were too big. Then I tried the medium bass tips and they were too bassy lol. So now I've settled for the medium balanced tips and they sound fantastic. I usually listen to Hifiman HE-4XX and the FH5 is a much more sensible listening experience lol. The M9 is very cute and easy to use, as a long-time android user. Unfortunately though I don't like the way it sounds (when compared to the mojo, although it sounds much better than my phone to be fair), and I can't get it to talk to my mojo atm :( I have an otg cable that works between my Note 4 and mojo, and I bought a little usb c adaptor for it, and I've tried other otg cables. Not sure what I should have the M9 set to (I assume SPDIF), or what the difference between DoP and D2P is, but I think I've tried everything. Instructions are bad. I'm wondering if I need to buy the CL06 cable from Fiio, but you don't appear to be using that in your mojo setup. I'm probs gonna have to email Fiio, or send it back if I can't get it to work as a replacement to my Note 4. But at least the FH5s are amazing, I just need to find a way of getting my mojo out of the house.
@FriedEgg1015 жыл бұрын
So I put the M9 on high gain with a slow roll-off filter and I'm liking the sound a bit more after listening for a while, especially paired with the FH5s (not so much HE-4XX). I think I'll keep it because I love the Tidal functionality, even though my phone has it I somehow prefer using it on the M9 tethered to my phone for internet access. I still prefer the sound of the mojo though so I've emailed Fiio to ask advice and ordered the CL06 official otg cable (from ebay cos I can't find it for sale in the uk), and if that doesn't get the M9 talking to the mojo I'll be writing a very grumpy review. I assume it should be relatively plug and play if it's going to work at all. I will admit it could be user error but there aren't that many settings and I've tried them all, so I have to conclude it's the cable. It's not too bad on the power side to be fair, I have to hike the volume to 115 (out of 120) on high gain to get it to the equivalent of 'dark blue' on the mojo when using HE-4XX, and the difference is obvious tbh; the mojo wins hands down, but I'm still very impressed with the M9 and I'm gonna keep it. It's cute, well built and functional, and it sounds pretty good for a mobile device.

@@FriedEgg101 I'm afraid one is buying into the FiiO infrastructure the same way as buying into the Apple ditto. FiiO have numerous times claimed (at Head-Fi) that there is no one way Android thingies talk to peripherals. I suggest that you make a straight forward question to the FiiO representatives in the correlating Head-Fi thread what connector you need to use to make the DAP work with your Mojo through the USB port. Line out wont be a problem, but USB is another chapter. I'm glad you found a good tip match for your FH5. In my case I needed to use large balanced tips to make a good fit. I usually use medium sized tips.
@FriedEgg1015 жыл бұрын
@@springbay1 Thanks for the reply, it was encouraging. I don't particularly mind buying into an infrastructure (within reason) I just want my shit to work lol. I was a bit confused because, crackly digital noise aside, my Note 4 works very well with the mojo; just plug and play, and I don't even need an official OTG cable, just a miniscule 5cm usb micro to micro. The mojo also works flawlessly with my PC (with drivers), my brother's iphone and my brother's macbook. But the M9 doesn't want to work even with connectors labelled "otg". My hope is now pinned on Fiio's own assertation on their website that the CL06 otg cable is needed, and will actually work.
You can however turn KZbin videos into MP3 files and have them on the dap that way.

With the current firmware, the M9 only receives using SBC (no APTx or LDAC) so they'll be some loss of sound quality until they update this feature. I can't really test stability until they do. I'm hoping Shanling comes out with their new models of mp3 players soon. For me it's either this, the Sony NW-A55, or a Shanling M2. Overall this was a good product review, wish you went over the sound quality first as that's what most people want to hear and is one of the big deciding factors on whether to buy or not. Discussing the lows, mids, highs and bass (for us bass heads) and whether this puppy has enough power to drive a good size cans or if it works better with a dedicated amplifier is good info to know off the bat.
@Currawong5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. IMO, there's nothing to discuss with the "lows, mids, highs and bass" as all DAPs measure flat. It's only if they have an unusual circuit (like the Cayin N8), are deliberately tuned to sound a certain way (Calyx M), interaction issues with certain IEMs or headphones, or a fault, that it'll make a significant difference. Generally speaking, a low-powered DAP such as this isn't going to be a good match with, say, planar headphones if you want to turn the volume up loud.

Skip to the part where I talk about the sound. A lot of people want to know about the functionality. Something I actually missed was that TIDAL wont play in online mode reliably when using Bluetooth headphones. That's a showstopper for some people.

Currawong how’s the UI on this device? I’m reading that it’s really slow and clunky, but then others seem to be happy with the device. What’s the story mate?

Which sounds better q5 or m9

DAC-wise, I felt they were about equal. The Q5 has stronger amplification available though, so it can do better with full-sized headphones.

Bought the M9, far to complicated for no reason. Sent it back. Plus battery is flat every time I picked it up. Got a H2 Hifi Walker now, far better player, so simple to use, and blue tooth sends and reviews with no setting up or updates. H2great, M9 crap

Anthony Leatherbarrow Sounds to me you didn’t know what you were buying. This is for people who like to use streaming services.
