I went to Fiji in 2017 and their nation is incredibly proud of this team. They made a $7 bill to honor them too. When I exchanged my USD to Fijian dollars, I noticed the $7 bill and told the clerk that I remember watching their rugby team winning the nation's first ever gold medal. The clerk then handed me a $7 bill signed by one of their players. I kept it and still have it to this day! Bula Fiji, I can't wait to go back someday!

For me, this was definitely one of the highlights of the Rio Olympics. I remember calling my sister who was still at work and urging her to watch this match. We were both stunned. We play rugby in Jamaica, but one could never say that it is in our top ten most popular sports. I had to watch this to the end though. It was an absolute joy to witness. Fiji Prime Minister's words to our boys just before the finals in Rio Olympics (Translated from iTaukei Fijian language) "We have lost before so if you lose today, you will not create any losing history...you have reached the final and if you lose, we will still honour you for bringing home our first Olympic Silver Medal. But if you win, I tell you that your mothers at home will be proud and will recall the days when your mothers gave birth day to you. They were awake when you were sick. They did not sleep caring for you. When you took the first step, they are overjoyed. Do you want to bring that overjoy to your mothers again? If you do, bring the gold medal and hang it around your mother. After you have hung it around your mother, tell your mother that you run because she taught you how to walk and this gold medal is for her. If you do not win, you would bring tears into her eyes. Do you want to bring tears into the eyes of your mother in Fiji while you are in Rio? Go .... and play, not for the nation, and, not for the government ,because I am with you here. I am here to tell you to go and play for your mothers...." The Boys played for their mothers and hammered Great Britain 43-7. Tabusoro !- Never give up!

In Fijian culture kneeling (or sitting) and clapping is showing respect to someone of authority or nobility. All the players would have known who Princess Annne was. @timocigaunavinaka31584 жыл бұрын
Yes very true..... Ben Ryan groom and build this team to become what they are. Since they were camping in a resort with access to alcohol and etc. he breathlyzer them every day. The Sigatoka Sand Dunes where the team trained has remains of our Fijian Ancestors dating back to over 3,000 years. Ben then starve the players with carbohydrates (energy food) a month before Rio then took them to the thin oxygen altitude of the Andes Mountains where they secretly trained for two weeks before bringing them to the sea Level altitude of Rio just two days before the opening of the Olympics... he then pumped them up with carbohydrates... The impact of this was like injecting the players with steroid.....
@Ronald-qj5nx4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that book is a must read for anybody who has watched this game, one does not even begin to scratch the surface of realising the work that culminated in Fiji winning this medal if you have not read the book. It really makes you wonder how Fiji is able to be one of the top Rugby 7s teams with such an operating budget and how good could they be if properly funded. Rugby is generally a British Commonwealth sport, largely amongst those with strong British influence (England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, NZ, Australia, South Africa, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga) but is certainly not confined to those countries. France, Argentina, Italy, Japan, Canada, Romania, Georgia, and a host of others have strong rugby traditions in the 15-a-side game. In 7's rugby, the likes of the U.S., Canada, Kenya and others are more than capable of tipping over the traditional rugby nations.

I am from England (GB) the try where he pick it up on the line for Fiji. And the touch judge gave it. It was very good play and to be a touch judge and do that you can’t complain. What a game by both teams

In Fiji, everything paused when Fiji played...bringing back memories in primary school when our teacher used to bring his television to classroom. Fiji rugby at its best. Praise God for the talent

Fiji’s plan before this was to not eat sugar and to not go to the floor always off load , or basically Fiji touch where they get hit n offload, avoiding rucks and none can compete with their style of play
