USD is so much more powerful than any of the other formats. It is orders of magnitudes faster than alembic, can import lights and you can reference other usd files with a usd file. Basically you can have an usd file called layout only to position objects or you can work over top of someone elses work without destroying it and then theres hydra and materialx. Really interesting stuff, if all packages implement it already then we might have something similar to an universal stand, if not then we might have one of 16 Standards :-D

You know what would make a lot of sense? If the various file formats for transferring files between different apps simply had a flag to identify the software used to export it. That way the importer for the software being used to import that file in could automatically make the necessary adjustments to make it work during the import process. It could swap out Z for Y if needed. It could apply the scale to be right in that app, etc. I really have no idea why those clever programmers who create all this stuff haven't thought of this.

Please tell me you made a mistake at 13:50 describing Aperture. 100 years of photography and Maya had better not be using the word "Aperture" wrong. The Aperture of a camera is the size of the opening in the shutter. It's where we get the F1.4, F5.6, F11 numberings from. Looking at the settings I have no idea what the inches and mm measurements could possibly be indicating. If it really does refer to the sensor size, that's seriously annoying.

It's both actually. In cinematography, when you talk about 'full app", it means that the film gate is completely open to cover a 4:3 ration, four perforations on film. But yeah, kind of dumb on the Maya side to call this aperture instead of film gate.

Cookie? Lolwut? This stuff isn't something I have to consider thankfully. But I have to say, what a mess... Be glad we're not dealing with 4D geometry :D Can't wait to have cameras properly explained. What does (from camera spec sheet) sensor size 8.5mm (1/3") mean? Or Image Sensor Size 1/1.4 - that's not close to the 16:9 aspect it delivers - so how to deal with that? So far I've just been guessing and I've come pretty close - no complaints anyway. We sometimes do something like security camera simulations to see what they cover, and we know sensor size (but don't know what to do with it), focal length/field of view and some other unrelated data. You don't have to get into this if you had something completely different in mind.

@ProjectAtlasmodling3 жыл бұрын
@@BlenderBob It's probably do to how the software got started. Most came from companies that where once part of the the 2d industry or had people who were. So they used the y up because of there 2d experience. Blender however had a much different background and thus went with a more sensible Z up. There's no real difference in the end other than preference. An Axis is just a label.

@@ProjectAtlasmodling I'd argue that the axis orientation is a constant relative to the camera. With x and y being width and height respectively and z consistently being depth. Just like 3d, there should be universal 2d format, autodesk dwg is not supported in blender correctly but needed for every archviz project. Thats why people avoid switching to blender.
@massimoconcimedia6123 жыл бұрын
This is partly due to the fact that DWG is licensed by auto desk and to use the RealDWG SDK to develope a 3rd party applications supporting DWG money needs to be paid for the licensing. Obviously for free software this is a problem, so is usually reverse engineered.
@pauliusmscichauskas5582 жыл бұрын
I really don't get what the problem is with Z up... It's just how an axis is called. It doesn't change what it does. So... why can't blender just import X values of the file to X, Y to Z and Z to Y. No need to rotate anything, or apply any transforms etc...
@BlenderBob2 жыл бұрын
That’s because you don’t need to deal with Maya, zBrush, Nuke or any other software that are Y up.

File formats are the bane of existence if it comes to cross platform use. E.g. combining Blender with Marvelous designer to create animated cloth, sometimes it makes sense to combine formats, e.g. taking an OBJ for the mesh from MD and import into Blender, then import the alembic through a modifier and use it as a cache on the OBJ instead of importing the Alembic directly as this creates a proxy mesh that drives you mad. Similar with Collada. My main issue, nothing of this is properly documented. It. Took me ages to find the right forum thread that explained that you have to toggle a very specific switch for OBJ export to avoid hassle and the standard, of course, does not use it. Sigh… sigh again… despair - LOL.
