It was time for the GREAT FILIPINO BANGUS POND HARVEST In Cateel, Davao Oriental...
My British friend Anselm has been trying hard to get a local business going in the Philippines. It really hasn't been easy. In this video you will see us start the harvest at his fish pond. I ended up getting stuck into the muddy pond as it was drained... and tried my best to be a part of the Filipino work crew!
How did it go!?

Its true. Our Bonuan bangus is very famous that it is celebrated in Dagupan on May 1st(Piestay Dayat, or Feast of the Sea). Im from Pangasinan too. You should learn to ferment or say make daing na bangus someday @kumander daot

My Lolo/Lola had friends who lived somewhere in Digos a long time ago. Every Holy Week they visit our island and bring dried Bangus to give to the neighbors. 11:58 My aunt used to manage a prawn pond in Calatagan, Batangas when I was a kid and I used to spend my summers there. When they harvested them I used to do the exact same thing. Kakapain mo yung putik to get the prawns. Got paid P200 per net bag I collected. Some of the best days of my childhood right there!! =) Fun times Kulas and Kumander D!! Hopefully Kumander D got decent profit so he can continue the business!! Best of luck!!

The big pond is the rearing pond where the bangus fingerlings are being stocked and cultured up to maturity stage for harvest. The small pond were the matured bangus are being trapped/catch is the catching pond.

The big pond (Breeding pond) should be drained every year or so and the dried walls exposed to the sun to kill all the parasites. Also to make sure there are no predtors like Dalag or Hito that will feast on the newly hatched Bangus. Water is then fertilized with dried chicken manure to allow growth of "Lab-Lab" (Blue algae). High protein food for the hatchlings. Sabalo, or the adult Bangus peaks their productivity at ages between 5-12 years.

The bottom of the ponds are muddy, in some places that imparts a muddy flavor (Lasang Gilik) . Draining and drying the ponds every year or so and baking the sides and bottom of dried, baked clay, hardened sometimes with bonfires after draining.

First, I would like to credit Anselm for his entrepreneurial spirit - bold and fearless. Of all places on earth, he chose The Philippines to open his fish farming business - honorable. He brought job opportunity to the people in the area - respectable and commendable. Harvesting the bangus is being filmed as it happens - thanks to Kumar. What this episode meant to me was a life time chance seeing how bangus is being harvested. Despite the activities going on, I can't help myself but to notice Anselm's body language. He looked quiet and reserved, not as bubbly as I am used to seeing. As I scrolled down and start reading comments, the answer is loud and clear. Result of the fish harvest is not promising. I am hoping, it's not that bad. Break even is not that bad. I hope, the result will not discourage Anselm for pursuing his passions and dreams. I hope he will take his failures as his teacher and learn from it. I hope, he will make lists what went wrong and will come up with solutions, ideas and options on the next round. Giving up the fishpond business is not a good idea. If you choose to go down that road, as if as though, you give up on life too. Take the challenge head on and hopefully the change will be on your side next time. Believe in yourself, take on the challenge squarely, dig deep to yourself and conquer your fears. Life is all about confronting challenges and facing difficulties. Today is cloudy but tomorrow might be sunny and bright. Good thing though, you're not alone in this situation. Many establishments in California are in limbo because the governor asked them to close their establishment for the second time and everybody is running out of patience because they're losing money. Kudos to the people who worked on the farm. Lucky you, you have Kyle to confide your darkest fears, and I bet, he is all ears. It's nice to see a glimpse of Vince and Jessie on the video. Overall, was a good entertainment.
