This all depends on your experience. I agree we’re all Filipino no matter if you’re mixed or born here in the US. But, from my experience going to school here & being around other Filipinos, not many are proud to be Filipino or at least don’t show it. I see Filipinos making fun of “FOBs.” These are considered the “cool Filipinos” in school. They don’t give props if you can speak Tagalog. They laugh at you for it. These are the Filipinos that act like they’re too cool to be associated with their roots. They say your “FOB” if you don’t dress like them or don’t talk like them. So, from what I’ve seen, not many FilAms are proud at all. But, this was in high school. Maybe they just weren’t mature enough at that age, but I still know these people now, and they haven’t changed. If an NBA player is Filipino, they’ll be proud but if it’s for example, Charice when she was killin’ it, they would make fun of her. You guys know where I’m getting at. Did you guys see this at all growing up here? I’d love to hear this be topic cause I know you guys know what I mean. Any Filipino that grew up in the far east coast & west coast have seen this.

I'm so glad that you guys are having this dialogue because I've been seeing it everywhere and I have very mixed feelings. I'm not Filipino so of course I'm not going to insert myself in that space but as a Palestinian American I do have similar experiences. I'm never "Palestinian enough". Whatever that means. From my perspective as an outsider I think that it is ridiculous to shame someone for having pride about their homeland and simultaneously shaming them for not knowing enough. As immigrants it is up to our parents to teach us our culture. Sometimes they don't and for the parents they have a reason in mind for doing so. Usually it's just so that we acclimate well. Of course we have access to learn about our homelands but reading information is not living it. I think that's the biggest gap. Yes, we are capable of doing the research but if at the end of the day we don't experience it firsthand and also often; it isn't authentic. That is out of our control.

I want to share the filo living in the PH perspective. First of all I enjoyed all your thoughts about it, the dude who wanted to "bridge the gap" def came off weird about it. On the stole specifically, I think us as a community and race should find a better way to rep the PH. I know it came off as filos being haters about it, but here in the PH it's really discouraged, regardless whoever is doing it (and also just because the US is lax about it doesn't mean it is for us as well). I'm sure the people here in the motherland love seeing the filams being proud of their heritage and reppin' it, and to Merz's point that he did it to symbolize and pay respect what his parents did to get them there that's totally valid and appreciated. I just think that just because the flag law doesn't apply to filams, means it can be done casually, there should still be a level of respect to it. It's easier said than done to find a way to rep the PH without using the flag itself, but we're hella creative, I think we can find a middle ground for both communities. We all just want to flex the heritage, doesn't help that the flag itself is hella dope too lol.

I haven’t gone back home to the Philippines at all since I left with my parents , because I know I will be criticized for being too American. So, when I do claim to be fully Filipino here, and I do have pride to be one, I feel like I’m trying too hard. There will be a time I will end up going back with my American husband. My kids, who are half Filipino are more proud to be half Filipino, than half American.

Story of a mixed kid. I’m Mexican and Filipino I went through it with both sides. In school I was never Mexican enough to hangout with the Mexicans and not Filipino enough to hangout with the Filipinos smh growing up in San Diego that’s all there is for the most part lol. I’m mostly Mexican but I look more Filipino 😂😂😂 Filipinos were a little more accepting though, sh*t is complicated lol

Same thing with Hmong Americans. One "problem" for us right now is that Hmong Gen Zs do not know the language at all or maybe very minimal. I can foresee our language being lost forever. But anyway, they would get a slap on the hand for not knowing how to speak hmong, but they dont know cause its not being taught. So I wanna know why nobody in the home is speaking or teaching hmong? Schools speaks and teaches English so if at home you're not speaking Hmong to your kids then they're not gonna know Hmong. I'm not trying to bash any parent or guardian but I want them to recognize that they have the authority and lead to educate their own kids. I only knew Hmong cause my parents spoke to my siblings and me in Hmong. Also when I was little we lived in an apartment with Only Hmong people so at home I spoke hmong and had friends who spoke hmong then I learn English at school. And Yes, I agree. They just need to educate us. Do not shame us for not knowing. How can we "be Hmong" when we are growing up in America and living within American customs. Leave room for some grace, build relationship with your kids and educate. Anyway, I'm glad I still know Hmong even though I know I'm struggling with it nowadays. I hope I will still know enough to teach my future kids someday

1:30:00 I need to do commentary on y'lls commentary. But there it is. "Why are they mad?". Because like it or not because we Filipinos in the US we move the culture. We got Jo Koy, Bruno Mars, Dave Bautista, Olivia Rodrigo and even Hailee damn Steinfeld with her 1/8 Filipino background, etc, so when any news about Filipinos that's feed through the mainstream media it's in the lens of Filipino American culture. So (IMO) motherland Filipinos be mad we get the attention when (in their eyes) we're AMERICAN not Filipino. To which, I'd say, that holds some merit. And I say some, because if Bruno Mars or whatever Fil-Am celebrity were to show up at the Manila NY Int'l Airport, there will be no debate on their "Filipino-ness" because they have celebrity status. This hate, divide, etc. is more online performative clout than actual controversy. So rather it's a "Nontroversy" (Non-Controversy). Not to say there's isn't something we can learn from it. And there's definitely a level of responsibility that Fil-Ams with platforms SHOULD represent our people as best as possible.
