Great tips. Only one thing I would add is to be careful when using wood-chips in to your soil because they can consume a lot of nitrogen to decompose. If you do it now in the autumn it should be all fine until next spring. One tip that I can give (this is what I did) is to use surrounding topsoil to fill half of your beds. This is an old Irish method :) Called lazy beds.
@TheUrbanHarvest5 жыл бұрын
Funny you should mention that, I used the "lazy bed" method in my other raised beds. Absolutely works great!

I just posted a similar question. Habpve you had success with wood mulch when you top off your raised beds with about 12-18 inches of topsoil or black cow? New to gardening, many questions. ☘️

great info. working on a bed in the back yard. would you dig up the grass or just put a weed block and or mulch on it? East coast, CFL
@TheUrbanHarvest4 жыл бұрын
I do a sheet mulch approach. Overlap non waxed cardboard or several layers of newspaper on top of grass (no no need to dig - if its real long you might mow first) then cover with thick layer of mulch. Works great!
@slodays11584 жыл бұрын
@@TheUrbanHarvestThank You for the response. For the first box I did end up digging up the grass and transplanting it to a troubled area then using cypress mulch over some weed block that I had on hand and wire mesh as I do have moles. For the next box I won't dig though. Thanks again

Do you advise putting an organic fabric liner in your beds?
@TheUrbanHarvest2 жыл бұрын
I don't. It doesn't last long and then gets all ripped up in your beds and becomes a problem. A good sheet mulch under the bed is my preferred approach.
Hi Elise, neighbor here, kinda, Dunedin! Just getting started on my organic vegetable garden in 32” tall raised beds and was going to use natural cypress mulch approx 16 to 18 inches deep then possibly store bought soil or black cow for the rest. My project came to a halt when I heard that wood or wood mulch takes oxygen away from the plants. Since you used the chip drop mulch do you have any concerns about that chipped wood being harmful or perhaps less beneficial than the much more expensive all soil filled raised beds? What are your thoughts? Thank you.
@TheSafecrkr1 Жыл бұрын
I was always told that wood chips would Rob the soil and the plants of nitrogen. What are your thoughts on that subject please?

The beds are from northern tool. Chip drop varies depending on location, one drop was the next day & the second drop took a week. Both were large piles. I don't have video because they don't give you advance notice so I wasn't home when it was delivered. Check out their website for more details. getchipdrop.com/

Filling bed, going with a Hügelkultur type concept, something that us in Florida deal with that most gardners on youtube never have. Palm branches and palmetto stumps, can you think of any reason not to use them for the low levels of the bed? I have a large amount available. I also have a ton of mostly oak leaves and cut grass(years worth) in piles in the woods next door. Would this be worthwhile or would it be too acidic?
@TheUrbanHarvest3 жыл бұрын
palms usually arent the best for that. they stay stringy and don't decompose as well as other wood. As for the oak and grass (as long as it hasn't been treated) they are great additions. if you have woods picking up branches and sticks is great for a base too.
@rebekahb23934 жыл бұрын
I was recently told not to do this as it attracts termites... what type of mulch did you use?
@TheUrbanHarvest4 жыл бұрын
I try to use oak but get mine from free resources so its not 100%. Its always a possibility just like any other wood structure in Florida but I've never had any issues. Cedar or cypress both have natural oils that repel wood eating insects if you'd like to be cautious but it will probably cost you.

Hello. I live in Belleair Bluffs. Land is limited on my property. I want to put two or three raise beds in my front yard. Would you know if there are any zoning restrictions in Pinellas county re: raise bed in front yard?
@TheUrbanHarvest4 жыл бұрын
The state and local governments recently made gardening in your front yard legal! But if you are in a home owners or deed restricted community those by laws trump the legality at the state/county level. You would have to read your by laws to determine your communities guidelines.

Like the video mentions, compost is ideal but if its not available bulk soil. Then mix in some extras like the soil amendment video mentions.

Great video! Thank you for the information. I am in Oviedo FL (northeast Orlando) do you know if there is a similar program to the St Pete free mulch you mentioned in this area? Do you know any other business I could contact to get mulch, compost or other materials to fill a raised bed. I will be filling a tall 30" raised bed later in December. I have some material, sticks and a few grass clippings, but am looking for more. Thank you

I dont know specifically for your city no. Most of the free mulch programs are listed on your cities waste website. As for private companies you would just do a search for local landscaping companies. Sorry I dont have more specifics!

It is an issue if your plants are 'completing' with your soil for certain nutrients though...
@TheUrbanHarvest4 жыл бұрын
Im not sure what you mean. Like the plants are using up the nutrients that the compost has?
@Ms.Byrd684 жыл бұрын
@@TheUrbanHarvest Mulch typically has a lot of wood in it which can complete with Nitrogen loving plants. Wood products (limbs) would be in homemade Compost and if not totally broken down before adding to your beds should have the same affect as 'woody' mulch. There is also the issue of 'obstructions' for things like Carrots, which will 'split' if meant with 'force' in the soil. Unless of course your allowing those beds to fully decompose over a season before you start planting to try and avoid that possible problem...
@TheUrbanHarvest4 жыл бұрын
@@Ms.Byrd68 ah got ya, yes if compost is not fully decomposed when using mulch as the main carbon source you can sift it to remove the large woody debris to re-compost or you can simply leave it in and let things flow or add supplemental nitrogen (like worm castings). I tend to skip the sifting and soil amending if trying to get a large number of beds started. I usually see slightly lower production the first season then things pick up from there. The time and cost savings in many cases to me is worth the slight decrease in production.
@Ms.Byrd684 жыл бұрын
@@TheUrbanHarvest I see so it DOES HAVE AN EFFECT but you don't find it to be 'detrimental' to the plants and less so in 'successive' years? Okay but that's actually what you should say because some are going to 'walk away' thinking there is NO EFFECT. Glad I asked, glad you answered! Be blessed!
