The Chinese lantern, as you have recognized from the name, is inspired from the Sky Lanterns from China. These lanterns were used during war for signaling troops. After a short while, the lights became popular with kids and adults. Which made them popular at festivals.
A few hundreds years later, some a smart person decided to stick a Chinese lantern on a light for a photo! That brings us to today where we need to fill light. The Chinese lantern gives the advantage like one my friend says to “light without looking lit”.
Used as a single source modifier, it creates a naturalistic light that simulates what we see indoors.
Use in combination with other modifiers, the Chinese lantern creates a gentle directionless fill light.
In a non-ball form, the light from mount to top measures 24 inches or 60.94cm.
The Chinese lantern creates a very even light that is omnidirectional.
My overall impressions of this modifier are:
1 - great to create a fill light or naturalistic scene lighting
2- Also great to light a couple of subject without too much "directionality".
3 - build quality is decent, I wouldn’t carry this on a rough shoot but the locking system is nice and needs a little strength (barely) to setup.
Although, the unit velcro for this model has a hard time closing all the way through which can either be attributed to user error or the measurements of the cover fabric. (most likely me)
4 - But overall, I am quite happy to have this in my bag and look forward to use it on location or outdoors!

I just ordered one two days ago and it came in today. I wanted a Lantern specifically for videos, and the reason I chose a lantern over a regular octagonal or rectangular softbox is because i'll be shooting groups of people (about 3 to 4 people at the same time) and panning my camera around so I need the light to reach everyone. It was either the lantern or 2 regular softboxes

I have the Godox 85 lantern - The velcro is tight but you need to match the inside frame bars with the fabric creases. Your problem will be solved.

Are you using 1 strobe and 1 continuous light?

In video where subjects are moving around I can see the advantage of the lantern modifier. In flash photography where you’re not using the bounce off the back, I don’t see the advantage of the lantern over a shoot-thru umbrella. That said, I like the video and your explanation of fill light and how it can reduce retouching time.

Hi 👋🏾, thanks for the demo. It was very helpful to see a lantern modifier used as a fill light in context. The lantern modifier is really impressive. Would you ever consider using 2 lantern modifiers instead of a lantern and and softbox pairing? I’m considering doing a 2 light set-up for portraiture with 2 lanterns, with one as a key and the other a fill. Would you ever go with a 2 lantern set-up over a softbox and lantern set-up? 🥂

Hmmmm.... I wouldn't. This would be very broad lighting and I always like to have one light that I can control the spill. The lantern does not allow you to do this. I'd pair it with an octabox or an umbrella.

Hi YvensB Photo, I had assumed the extra control from a octobox or umbrella would be valuable but it is very helpful to have some confirmation to guide my experimentation. Ive just ordered an AD200pro and the Aputure Lantern. I’m looking forward to jumping into studio photography! Thanks for the insights!

The soft lighting happens because the light bounces everywhere, so I don't see how you avoid color cast issues by using a lantern

The diffuser Velcro is still a problem I just got the glow 20” and I can get it close but not perfect but it’ll work came here to see if I was doing it wrong lol nope it’s just tight AF

I do like your concept and explanation for your still photography, and if a picture is worth a thousand words then why not do it for your on screen image. Your one portion of face is gone with out the fill light, just saying....
