You may also want to check the difference between using closed-cell foam instead of open-cell. Open-cell has paths that allow the trapped air to escape. It'd be interesting to see!
@Ghryst

there are holes in teh tyres, open cell foam would absorb water every time you go through a puddle and even just soak up surface water when it rains. not very smart.

I would have calculated the foam volume so you dont need relief holes. You know the expansion ratio of the foam. You can measure the volume of the tire. If you calculated the right amount of foam to get 3 times the tire volume, you'd (theoretically) end up with 3 bar in the tire. You wouldnt need the relief holes, and the final pressure would be a lot closer to a normal tire.
@bennylloyd-willner9667

Wouldn't you still need some holes to release the air that is in the tyre already? Or does the foam "use up" the air?
@VintageCR
@VintageCR Жыл бұрын
the thing is, there isnt only foam in there, air is in it as well, so less foam = more air. more foam = spillage(if you drilled holes) but also air that can escap from the tire.. what they should have done is spread holes on both sides of the tire, then fill it completely with the foam liquid mixture and run/stay away + let it sit overnight. the foam itsself once it is hard, als consists of air as well so.. any air that was in the tire still (after the liquid pooring) should be removed through holes. otherwise if you do poke it with a knife, you hear hissing noise from leftover air and the tire will be less inflated lmao

Yes, there would be a bit of air trapped. Unless the tire is complete shit though it should be rated to handle more than 3 bar. Tires on my light truck right now are rated to 5.5 bar. Plus there's going to be a safety margin on top of the rating. One whole tire volume of trapped air would add 1 bar, but we're not trapping an entire tire volume of air. And the volume of the polyurethane itself displaces some air so that adds some pressure. The heat from the expanding foam would also add some pressure. Overall though, you'd still be well within the bursting pressure of the tire.

This is a pretty common thing that's done on industrial equipment. A common place you see it is in the tires of skid loaders at scrap yards since tire punctures are common in that sort of environment. Generally makes changing tires a pain (often just have to change the tire and the rim), but better that having to deal with tire punctures everyday.

@Swim Fan Different material but same idea. Lots of people use "window weld" polyurethane to replace car bushings. Depending on the car its actually a slightly stiffer (a slight upgrade) to the factory super soft ones, that tear easily. Some factory bushes are even filled with a gel... those also tear easily.. So easily so that if the tech who installs them does it incorrectly, just letting the car down on its own weight will tear them.

Here in Canada you can buy one time foam expander for punctured tires. The can has a nossle that attachs to your tire air valve so you can blow the tire up. This is only meant to get you home or to nearest garage. The stuff seals the hole up to a reasonable size and blows up the tire. These cans oftin come in car emergency kits with other items like booster cables, flashlight, gloves etc..

I would be more curious what would happen by adding more Schrader valves all around the center of the wheel, then remove all their valve stem cores so that you have no holes in the tire other than the stems. Fill it with the foam thru the bottom valve steam and spin the tire so that the foam centrifuges to the outside of the tire. Let it harden, and then add more foam, and spin it some more. You can then add the valve stem cores back to the tires after it all mostly solidifies with very little air pockets inside. You should be able to then air it up using the Schrader valves and the tire should still be pretty much puncture proof as the foam would act more like stop leak.

Has Vlad and the crew fixed up a Lada with a complete air ride suspension? That would be a good project. Instead of basketballs, as was done before, get some real suspension airbags (like the ones for a bus) and rig up an air pump and controls to inflate and deflate the airbags.

@@SwapBlogRU I found a video of another Lada ( not the shorty) that was given a basketball suspension. Interesting idea but, it didn't last long at all. I'm thinking of Vlad getting some legitimate air bags off of a bus or some other truck and stuffing them underneath. Rig up an air pump driven by the engine and controlled from inside. The air pump can come from a diesel truck with air brakes. It will already have the pulley, fittings, and mounts. I'm sure bus air bags will give the best ride for a Lada at a third of the air pressure they normally take. But, Vlad will have valves on the dashboard to control the inflation and deflation of the air bags.

Back in the day, tires used to have inner tubes, wouldn't it be a great come back to fill the inner tube with foam, allow the tube to protect the rim from goo, so when the tread is gone, you only need new tires instead of rims and tires. Perhaps have the instalation rotate on a spindle as it expands, the inner tubes may already have no air in them that needs to be expelled.

You should fill a tire with the yellow urethane expansion foam that comes in aerosol cans and gets hard when it cures you should just pop the valve stem and spray it in and replace the valve stem as soon as the foam starts to come through the hole you'll achieve about 15 psi inside the tire from atmospheric so it should work way better than that soft grey stuff.
@Stupidspencer1
@Stupidspencer1 Жыл бұрын
I've tried it. The Great Stuff foam doesn't ever expand and set unless it has a low pressure path (with air available) to expand into. I filled a tire using the method you mention (removing valve stem to fill) and several MONTHS later, most of the foam was still liquid inside the tire. Upon cutting the tire open, the liquid foam that had been in there for several months then began expanding and setting. So Great Stuff doesn't work for this purpose. I think the reason it won't set is that this type of foam is a single part, air activated reaction. The professional foam is a two part reaction where the dispensing machine mixes the two parts at the time it is dispensed which starts the reaction. It cures independent of the presence of air.

You need to make a special jig for the tire. Take the wheel off the rim. Put it in the jig that will keep the shape as you put the foam into the tire under presser. The most important part is to make sure the tire is balanced. If there is not enough foam in spots the ride will be very bouncy and uncomfortable ride. When driving a car down the road your tire builds up air pressure. You put in 32lbs of air. While driving the car down the highway at 55mph. Your tires build up air pressure in the tire after 20 minutes your tire pressure is about 36 to 38lbs. Where does this air come from? It’s crazy but it your putting foam in the tire you have to count on the build up of air pressure to. Putting holes in the rubber is useless. Put the foam in before you put it back on the rim. Use a cutter and shaper to cut the over flow of foam off before putting the rim back on. Check the balance of the tire. Good balance without any damage to the tire or rim. Give it time to harden and saddle down while spinning the wheel to keep everything in line. Then through the tire on the care and hit it. Since there isn’t know air build up in the tire there isn’t any chance of the tire exploding. The tire will push off the rim and stretch away from the rim not go boom. If pressure was in the tire yes there is a chance but not likely to All because there isn’t enough air only foam that takes up the space where the air is so post to have been. Fire is my only worry. It’s very deadly from the gasses that let off from the foam. Plus how hot it gets too. That’s should be the looked into more as welll. The more heavier the foam the stronger the tire. Just one problem how uncomfortable the ride will be. All these Ideal have been tried before. Just go check out a Goodyear book at the library. Through the years everything has been tried. Good luck at your project.

I think you may be looking the wrong direction with harder polyurethane. If you think about the way a tire works normally, air is not hard, it's just pressurized. So maybe try to figure a way to fill the tire through the fill valve? Or design a larger fill valve that could be used. That way the air in the polyurethane won't have a way to escape when driving the car.

The sound deadining foam they are using is much like a foam sponge. Other types of foam like the kind that pool noodles are made of are far less permeable to air and water. Your method of sealing the tire would more or less be just a typical tire with run flat qualities. Now if they were to continue looking to choose the right type of foam and inject it into the wheel while vertically spinning at an optimal speed in several layers of increasingly more dense foam towards the rim, but of course also allowing each layer to fully dry before injecting the next; they would be able to create a badass tire that would out perform all other modern runflats.
@RANDOMNATION907
@RANDOMNATION907 Жыл бұрын
Very interesting. I suggest fully seating the tire on the rim, then let the air out. Then drill five or six 12mm-14mm holes in the metal wheel so the foam can be injected into the holes. Inject a bit in one hole only, let it expand just for a minute, then move to the next hole. Also, use trailer tires. They have triple thick sidewalls. Not advised to use trailer tires on steering locations. But on rear 'Load Bearing' locations, yes.

I use 2lb Closed Cell running through Glascraft MH2 with 3/16 x 3 in long jet stream tip on Probler 2 gun. (I ONLY FILL OFF ROAD TYPE TIRES NEVER TIRES THAT NEED BALANCING AND ARE FOR HIGHWAY USE) Heaters set at 120 and 125 on hose heat with 1100 psi on gauges. I remove valve core and drill 1/4 in holes in tread and inner side wall. i do not break down the tire as I haven't found it necessary . Amount of holes and amount of foam will vary base on tire size I use the digital counter on machine as opposed to a count up of time... Write down tire size amount of strokes on counter along with your temp and pressure settings. If you get everything dialed in correctly then stick with the formula that works, It should be very consistent with equal size tires.

Awesome video, testing multiple densitys is an excellent idea. Those remind me of drag /funny car tires. Is there a way to test rolling resistance or half a kilometer times / quarter mile times? Maybe using a tire machine to spin can reduce air and holes in rim to vent. Spining faster in theory should move air to center and makes out part denser. A bonus is if you can get the foam to set up while spining the tire should also self balance. And are the tires quieter?

I've done this with garden tractor tires for years. You need a denser foam for it to be reliable, otherwise you need to run a modest air pressure as a backup. Doing it at home, it's lots easier to just mount it and roll it on the axle slowly to let the foam 'slush cast', using either off-the-shelf 16lb foam or more rigid 20lb foam with a plasticizer agent mixed in.

I worked in a factory that made and used polyurethanes. The chemicals for foam or solid casting resin are the same only in different ratios to change the urethane chain length. When more than one urethane is used then it is a polyurethane... poly being many. Long chains of urethanes will make a soft material an short chains will be hard. Introducing an accelerator along with the activating catalyst will cause the reaction to happen quickly as well as causing carbon dioxide gasses to become trapped in the polyurethane making it foamy. ***PLEASE use PPE, respirator, nitrile gloves. Polyurethanes contain and release isocyanate. This chemical is known to cause health problems.

like use the older style split rim that could be put back together without much problem after the foam was in the tire

What you need to do is finjd out what the volume is of the tire/ then oyt 1 times less the volumr of foam.. that way you wouldnt need relife holes. and you could also pump air in it. So in essence making it a runflat.

Maybe try with high density foam. And use tyre tubes. Inject foam from the air valve.

Can you put a tire in a tire in a tire etc Example smallest tire inside a slightly bigger tire and so on to a size that fits in the wheel arch but no air in any

I wonder if they could make a stiff rubber tape which you wrap around the outside of the tire to provide rigidity, even with no tire pressure.

Cool experiment.🙂👍. Why not try stuffing steel wool inside the tyres and then insert the rim inside, instead of the foam?

You need to put enough foam to simulate pressure when filled with air.

Polyurethane foam often doesn’t cure very well if you blow it into a closed space, but it’s not really designed for fitting into tyres. Scissor lift wheels are sometimes fitted with some sort of foam but I don’t know what they use. Also, I want to know how you drove over a bunch of nails and didn’t manage to get a puncture and somehow I get a nail or screw in one of my tyres every week.

Probably better.. or drill another hole for a schrader valve... keep one filling up and the other for fine adjustments to get the pressure right 😁

Foam fill the tire OFF the rim. 1st step: take tire off rim, lubricate the tire bead and rim to make them slippery - take out valve stem. (Do a test: spray 6 inches of foam [inside the tire if you want to conserve foam] and watch it for 2 minutes to see how much it expands, so you can make better judgements). 2nd step: Lay tire flat - without rim. 3rd step: spray 10% foam - aiming to cover some on inside sidewall, some inside tread area. ( remember 10% foam only - let foam set -up a little bit... BUT not much - you want the foam from each step to keep expanding onto the next step) 4th step: turn tire over - repeat step two - 10% more foam. 5th step: add 30% more foam between and above the first two applications. .( My percentages might be wrong ! for you - 10% + 10% + 30% might expand to 110% - LESS - IS MORE You can always put more in , but you'll have a hard time taking some out. 6th step: mount tire on rim. 7th step: rotate the Slippery tire 360 degrees while your spraying the last 30% foam THROUGH the valve stem hole. GET THIS ALL DONE WITHIN 5 - 7 MINUTES. 8th step: place the rim up on a support so nothing touches the tire, so it can evenly expand.

I think he's onto something here. This should be the future of tire fill, it gives good shock absorption. Just balance the tire after fling with foam

Running deflated tires doesn't increase your traction. It decreases your ground pressure, allowing for better flotation on soft surfaces.

There were some concern about overfilling and making the tire explode. How much pressure can the foam produce? I mean it surely can't expand 17 times (or what was said in the video) regardless of how tough container it is poured in to.
@gmailisaretard
@gmailisaretard Жыл бұрын
Well, that is pretty much exactly the concept behind a bomb though. You build pressure into a vessel until it bursts. if that foam is going to expand 17 times it is going to go ahead and expand until the vessel fails...
@beez1598
@beez1598 Жыл бұрын
Hot, exothermic reaction means rapid gas generation and expansion, the foam expands with the gas and eventually hardens. If the reaction rate calculations were spot on, you could fill them with less concern, but I wouldn’t trust a crusty old junk yard tire, I suspect that’s what they are more likely running away from.
@bennylloyd-willner9667
@bennylloyd-willner9667 Жыл бұрын
@@gmailisaretard well, that depends on the toughness of the vessel of course which was my question: "how much pressure can it produce if put in a rock solid container that is more than 17 times smaller than the amount of foam (when expanded) poured in?"

To fill the tyre with foam you have got to spray with fine mist of hot water at the same time as the foam or it will not set and expand in Layers that will work 😀
