How do you fill the wicking tubs with water?
@bingster-2234 жыл бұрын
@@orlandotruitt5997 The 1st time or 1st couple times put the water in the soil to get it saturated. From there on you can put the water in the fill tube. You can't over water them the containers have a drain hole, no matter how much you put in it only fills up until the drain hole. The bigger the plant the more it drinks. Technically you could add water every day until it comes out the drain hole then it would never run dry, but one of the benefits of growing this way is not needing to water all the time.

Hi. This is Paulette from Phoenix, AZ (originally from Waukegan, IL). I now live in an apartment with a huge patio-back yard with half wall fence) that faces North but I still get pretty good sun in mornings from the East & in late afternoon-evening, I get it from the West. It will be my first time to try a wicking barrel. I've been seeing so many different styles, do you believe that your system is best? I noted you used the same dirt for top & bottom, what was your dirt mixture? Also can you kindly jot down for me the mixtures you put in the middle dirt? Also, how do you make your plants grow across the pot in the other side of the barrel & do you keep all leaves on while doing this do you take some off & at what time do you get it to go straight up again & how?? I truly thankyou for your site. I & all my family had great gardens & when we got our, when we got our dirt rototilled we added either duck or goose manure in, things grew really great there in Illinois! Now desert life & garden growing is a whole different experience to learn still. Thankyou in advance for any questions answered & may God always bless You & Your's.

I absolutely loved this video. Arms Family Homestead recommended your channel to me and I am so happy he did. I am very new to trying to grow vegetables in my back yard. They are in Big planters and I made a raised bed. At least I tried. It is still holding together. I am not a carpenter that's for sure. I will look forward to all your valuable information that may help me this year as I am already having problems with my zucchini not wanting to grow they keep rotting. I guess it's bud rott or something. I have a couple that seem like they are growing but the majority have rotted. I'm still trying though. I've added some form of calcium hoping that will help. I used Epson Salt and Egg shells. I just trying to find Ideas online to make my plants happier. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'm a big fan.

You didn’t show how you’re supposed to add water so that the plastic jugs soak up water. Every other video I’ve watched shows a tube going down into the barrel and water is added that way so that the water is at the bottom of the tub. Otherwise, you’re going to have to water from the top as you would any other pot. The way you have it set up all the jugs are going to do is maybe soak up extra water so the tub isn’t over watered, but you’re still going to have to water from the top which negates having a wicking system in the first place. Did I miss something???

I see a lot of questions here. I am by no means an expert, but I have an advantage over most of you. I was taught how to do this one-on-one by Leon. So while I cannot guarantee you I am correct, I will try to explain the theory so that you can figure out the answers to your questions. The idea here is to have a tub that contains potting soil with water reservoir beneath it. You can use any type of container to make your tub. And you can use any type of container to make your water reservoir. It doesn't matter how big it is. So for my explanation I'm going to use the feed container with the six inch pipes. I have several of the feed containers which are about 20 gallons. I filled it full of potting soil and put a plant in it. The problem is if I don't have enough water in it the plant dies. If I have too much water the water level gets too high and the plant drowns. In order to prevent this we put a hole in beside 5 in from the bottom. But the plant will still have a tendency to drowned. Also I have 5 in of space on the bottom to hold water but I really am not holding that much water because it's full of dirt. That's why we put in the 6in drain pipe. It gives us a space to hold water in the bottom 5 in. Plus we have a 1 inch air space above the water level. This prevents too much moisture from getting up and causing root rot and drowning your plants. this is why I we put a smaller container in the bottom. It creates a space to hold water. now I used 6-inch pipe in mind to create this water reservoir. Because the pipe is 6in tall and the drain hole only allows water to fill in to a depth of 5in, I now have a 1 inch air space. This 1in dry zone is what prevents your plans fromLLP l getting root rot and prevents them from drowning. The landscape cloth that Leon puts it in is purely to keep the dirt from filling up the pipes. If you're using some other container for your airspace that is basically sealed up with the exception of a few small holes you don't have to worry about dirt getting in your water reservoir / airspace. In that case you don't need the landscape cloth. The pipe used to fill the container really is not necessary at all. The container will work brilliantly without the pipe. But the pipe is there for you, not the plant. If you want to fill the water reservoir at the bottom without the pipe then you must water extremely slowly and allow the water to trickle down through the dirt. So you can be there for an hour filling up just a few containers. With the pipe you have a direct route to get the water into your water reservoir. When I water my containers I water all 15 in about 3 to 5 minutes. Now I'm going to see Leon in about 3 weeks. There's going to be a get-together at his place and I'm going to be there. If he has anything to add I'll try to make any necessary corrections. I might even try to put together video of my own to explain it in more detail. if you have any questions on feeding and fertilizing may I make one suggestion . . . Do not ask me. I am guaranteed to give you the wrong answer. Those kinds of questions are exactly why I am so happy that Leon is only 45 minutes away.

Wesley, you have mentioned the worries I have with the system in this video. First, you say "That's why we put in the 6in drain pipe. It gives us a space to hold water in the bottom 5 in. "- Then, you say " this is why I we put a smaller container in the bottom. It creates a space to hold water. now I used 6-inch pipe in mind to create this water reservoir." I have a hard time picturing this. Is there an image of how your version looks? Is this version you described shown in any of Leon's videos, or in someone else's video? I am having a hard time finding what I think is the "best" and easiest way to do this, but so far they all seem either too complicated or seems like there would be the problems you mentioned here. Thanks.

No pipe for watering this time ?
@wesleyandj.r.1735 жыл бұрын
Actually the pipe isn't a 100% requirement. You can always just water through the dirt on top. But as you can imagine trying to fill up a 3 or 4 gallon air space by allowing the water to drain through the dirt is going to take some time. The pipe it's just to make it quicker and easier to fill up the air space. This is one of several videos that were created all at once to try to answer other people's questions. I have a feeling this tub was put together just for this video and isn't one of the actual wicking container tubs that he grows in. First Sunday in May there's going to be a get-together out at Leons place. I live close enough that I'm going to have the pleasure of being there. If you get the chance come and join us. Leon loves to answer questions one-on-one. He will drop everything to talk to somebody in person. But he is a very, very busy elderly gentleman with a business to run.
