Film Dokumenter - Sikola Baruak (School of Monkey) 2015

Sebuah film dokumenter minang mengenai tradisi beruk pemetik kelapa di Padang Pariaman Sumatera Barat.
Sinopsis:
Nagari Toboh Gadang di Padang Pariaman Sumatera Barat, memiliki sebuah 'sekolah' untuk hewan primata yang dalam bahasa lokal disebut Baruak. Baruak banyak digunakan oleh masyarakat di beberapa daerah di Sumatera Barat sebagai pemetik kelapa dan menjadi tradisi yang masih eksis sampai saat ini. Yuang Oroh (65) lahir dari keluarga Pabaruak, sejak duduk di bangku sekolah dasar ia memutuskan untuk berhenti sekolah dan meneruskan profesi orang tuanya. Demi menghasilkan Beruk yang telaten dalam memetik buah Kelapa dan berharga mahal, mulai dari memilah, memelihara, melatih, jual-beli hingga tukar tambah beruk menyita waktunya sehari-hari. Disebabkan keuntungan yang didapatkan tidak sebanding dengan kerja keras, profesi tersebut kini menjadi langka di Sumatera Barat. Ditambah lagi kesehatan Yuang Oroh yang terkikis usia, kini hanya tersisa 2 orang anak kandung dari Yuang Oroh yaitu Ris dan Masrizal yang masih bertahan menjadi Pelatih Beruk.

This is the only way they can do something useful in their life, otherwise they are just a waist of air, they are more worth hunting as a sport, seriously, they should replace the hunting of tigers,lions, rhinos and replace em with those monkeys, would make the world a better place with only a small ammout of those nasty things on our earth

are you out of your mind? of course we shouldn't hunt those monkeys, you maybe see them as nasty creatures but saying it's ok to hunt the monkeys is just like saying it's ok to let those monkeys be extinct, so that's what you want? kill all those innocent monkeys so they'll be extinct? and these monkeys are useful only to humans, what do the monkeys get in return? some amount of coconut? that's not enough for that exhausting work! these monkeys don't get any benefit from picking coconuts, only humans do, free monkeys aren't a waste of air, they can live their own life in the way they want, searching for food, bonding with others and reproduce so the population is stable, monkeys are better to be let free in the wild, if humans want the coconuts, they should pick it by themselves, or use tools or machines, not enslaving innocent monkeys

This is a tradition of the culture because people here in Sumatra barat Indonesia use coconut milk a lot for food so they use the monkeys for this job, many food of this place using coconut milk in their traditional food That's why this coconut business has important thing in social life. instead of people using machine with lot of Pollution of carbon to take part this job better prefer using this natural methode for this Business with its cultures and aesthetic things of life art on it. This is a symbiosis of mutualism the monkeys have been got take care very good, such as if you have a dog or pet in your house this is the same thing, no neglected here, we take care of them very well. i hope this unique tradition❤ won't be over.

I am so glad stores have stopped selling coconuts picked by monkeys, I wish every store in the world would stop. This is so cruel! I just hope when the owners die they spend eternity in hell, wearing a razor sharp collar and leash and that a demon is always beating him with the leash as he is forced up a tree covered in broken glass to harvest coconuts covered in needle-like spikes. That would be the start of justice!

It would have been interesting if the director could have elicited out of him some comment about what the monkeys go through. Infants stolen from their mothers--often after having killed them, forced fights, cramped cages, isolation. But not one damn word about that. I suppose this is how slave masters talk.

These monkeys do not like their trainers very much. Monkeys are very affectionate when they love someone and you don’t see that with any of their monkeys. They walk because they don’t want to get dragged anymore. They play and twist the coconuts hung by the tree they are chained to because there is nothing else for them to do or play with. I know this from working with primates at the zoo and with dogs I trained for the show ring and movies. These monkeys work because they are forced to work or they don’t get fed not for love of their masters. They maybe should try a different technique like positive reinforcement, giving them a special piece of fruit or something for a job well done. The monkeys may work better that way then being forced to do something because they are scared of their owners and afraid they will not get food. Chains around their necks being tied to a tree 24/7, dragged to a pond to take a bath, forced to do a job so they can have their little bowl of rice at the end of the day. I know they are animals but it sounds just like slavery and look how wrong we were there!!! I think they would work just as well if not better if they were rewarded for their work and in training. Yes there is the old way of doing thing that has been passed down from one generation to the next but who says it can not change to have more compassion for the monkeys who are our long distant cousins then what they are doing now??

Everything this man says in the video is true. Since the male monkeys are more aggressive, they don’t live very long 25 years max. The aggressive ones only live to 10 years old because they are constantly battling a seasoned alpha male.. females do live to the age of 50 and they obey much better. They don’t have all of that sexual aggression that males have.

Kok dipabandiangan nan sarjana ko umpamo jadi hamo (pengangguran, koruptor), nan pabaruak ko malah mambuek hamo manjadi baguno. Kedua-dua bahsa pertuturan, loghat pertuturan Melatih monyet mengutip kelapa untk mengutip kelapa untk dijual. Ladang kelapa penduduk kpg Suasana di kawasan kpg Sama sunyi dn dekat dengan pantai. Ia hampir dipanggil bahawa kedua-dua Minangkabau dn Kelantan mempunyai bnyk persamaan.
