Basic Shoot
This week Ryan, and Tanja, work with Tia to setup a basic editorial style shoot from start to finish; The trio scout an abandoned farm location for lighting, style hair and makeup, as well as create some awesome wardrobe. They will be working with Kat Miller and Ashley Southern, two amazing models, to create a very simple and "farm-fresh" look. With frizzy braids, and wardrobe reminiscent of Little House on the Prarie, and two gorgeous subjects- its a perfect culmination of factors.
With only one camera, one lens, and one roll of film, Ryan and Tanja show you that setting up an amazing shoot doesn't have to be a huge production. Just a great idea, and a bit of resourcefulness will go a long way.

This series changed our lives since it first aired. Since viewing it, we've started shooting more and more film til it has become like 90 percent of our workflow. We couldn't be happier

I agree totally. Film photography and one lens. I own 4 film cameras and one aps-c sensor digital camera. I process my own film and print. I love working with available light and very basic lighting. I shoot in black and white only and use fixed focal lengths all the time. It sounds restricting but its actually liberating to use one camera and one lens. images are more meaningful, more thought out. I wish more people would shoot film again and start being photographers again. Digital cameras I use for vacation and certain assignments that require it. If i could, I would shoot film for everything.

Amazing! Today, as an early Christmas present, my hubby gave me a Contax 645. It's my first film camera. Naturally, I've been absorbing as much info and inspiration as I can! Thanks guys!

The camera is a Mamiya 645; the lens an 80mm f/2.8 (normal). The "matte box" is also known as a "compendium lens hood", and it's being used as a lens hood. He doesn't appear to be using filtration. Portra and Reala both give that low-saturation, realistic color rendition; Pro 400H would also be a possibility, but the depth of field and limited top shutter speed of the Mamiya point more towards a lower-speed film. (That's basically the choice you make with film: speed and contrast/saturation.)

Awesome photos, folks! It`s amazing how simple you can keep it by just using a film camera.. It inspired me to try that even with my 16 Gig memory card - take 36 photos - and see what comes out. That´s it. Keep up that great work!

Thank you. But the camera he is using is a Contax 645, not a Mamiya 645. I have the Mamiya 645 (and an RB67, RZ67, Universal, and a Mamiya 7) and you can clearly see at @11:25 that the camera he is using is the Contax.

You're right about the camera. I have no idea why it came out Mamiya when I typed it (other than that I owned RBs and RZs in the day). Residual resentment, maybe? Something Freudian, certainly.

@DavidKingsbury89
@DavidKingsbury89 9 жыл бұрын
+badboy69tuning light meter will help you nail the exposure every time, especially for portraits, where you can meter specifically for the subject's face. Use a lens between a 50 - 85mm focal length.

I noticed Ryan didn't go into what equipment he was using and why. Why that film choice? Why the matte box? Why that lens? If youre going to make an informational and instructive video, you have to give parameters of which equipment you have chosen and why.

I'm sorry, I don't consider this a basic shoot. Full make up, hair and wardrobe done by a professional stylist done under a popup tent situated next to a full blown RV that makes for a great place for models to get changed and not have to deal with the surrounding environment, a fairly amazing location that they don't say what kind of permission or hoops they had to jump through to book for this shoot (which is practically guaranteed they had to because that almost certainly isn't public land, if it was that entire area would be off limits), 2 professional models (or if not professional, semi-professional), crew members running around behind the scenes doing who knows what. Though I agree with the underlying idea that you don't need to complicate things to get pretty photos, this is not a good example of that idea. Many people could walk away with excellent photos from a setup like this.

It's easy to take a portrait at f1.4 during the "magic hour" and make it look OK, but a really good photographer is hard to come by. Most of the stuff out there isn't that great.

Sorry, but I found it completely disrespectful of the female photographer to have violated the rules of this entire video and to deceive her partner. He followed the assignment - where you not only violated the assignment, incorporated it into this video - to include photographs that violated the assignment - you should have been kicked off the set. That is all that rings true to me in this video at the end. Deception, distrust - that is what I see at the end of this video.
