It was my seventh smoke this hour, and still no clues were twisting themselves out of their cages and morphing into lithe, spirited answers. Whisky spilled across my desk, mixing with the sweet smell of forgotten dreams. And sleeping every night in the smoked husk of lost innocence was me. They all called me “Miracle Forest,” though I wasn’t quite sure why. I collected sounds, sounds I heard once in a fleeting lifetime and gone in the wink of an eye. I prided myself on a job well done, but only a few seemed to get it. And they were soon to be in deep trouble.

It starts to rain and I make my way to my office. As I enter I toss my key on the desk and pour a glass of bourbon. Its 10:30 and the day was long , too long. I turn up the steam radiator to dry out my coat. The radio is on and I fall into my chair. I pour another half glass of bourbon and light another Camel. The day is over I thought or is it as I glance up at the photos and crime scenes on the wall.
