*You actually **_did_** forget an option: one of the reasons they tested many nukes under the ocean is for the damping effect of water (since water is uncompressable). He doesn't need to get 6 miles out: he only needs to get 3 miles out, and then dump the bomb in the water - the damping of the water would prevent blast injury to most everyone, while a large majority of the fallout would be returned to the water after the blast created the cloud and it's associated radioactive steam. Yes, lots of folks would get dead, but it wouldn't be from the detonation, it would be from after the fact fallout and possibly tsunami.*

well lets keep in mind helicopters can only go so fast. a. traditional helicopter with a single proppeller blade on top (aside from the rudder blade used to keep the copter from spiinning out).which may be what the bat copter is unless I didnt notice forward propellers. The thrust used to keep the copter up and move it forward will be too great on the side where the blades move "with the grain" too commpensate and the copter tilts.

I think someone pointed out the big flaw in their theory: that the Bat would only be as fast as the fastest helicopter. That's the thing. It is. The film is set in some kind of alternate future. The Bat actually has jet propellors (you can see it as it's leaving the bay). So yes, it's way faster than the fastest helicopter.

Batman clearly states when attaching the bomb to the Bat "I can get it out over the bay" which implies that Gotham City (in Chris Nolan's universe at least) is right besides the ocean. Nolan's Gotham City isn't necessarily based upon NYC since in the Dark Knight Trilogy cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh and London were also filming locations for Gotham.

Dear, Matpat I loved your video. Although, there were a few problems that popped up for instance the batcopter in the comics was a common helocopter that fit usally one but could fit two people in some forms also called the whirlybat. Well that's not the same in The Dark Night Rises that seems to be more of the batplane plus no one calls it the bat copter not even Lucius Fox calls it that (he calls it the bat) I think that a plane can go alot faster than the fastest helocopter in the world. But besides that this is a bit more minor Gotham is actually set in New Jersey not Manhattan I know that the shots of Gotham are clips of Manhattan but I wanted to adress those hicups. before i even watch, let me point something out: the movies were written TO SPECIFICALLY SHOW that batman himself was the problem. every one of the villains were brough to gotham in some way by batman's existence. the Al Ghuls, Bane, the Joker (who was a direct response to batman), two face (was in the position thanks to batman's funding and social support, and was brought to his mental condition through the joker). everything that went wrong was in part due to batman being around. its why bruce wayne decided to end it at the end. he realized it was all his fault, and gave up his vigilateism.

Ras was going to burn the place to the ground before he even found Bruce in that Chinese prison and only recruited him because his first attempt (economics) didn't work. Ras made him Batman not the other way around. Ras made Talia and Bane who they were as well, not Batman. She had massive daddy issues and Bane had a boner for Talia. Scarecrow was a sick fuck before Batman showed up, Marconi was the same gang leader he was Seven years ago when Bruce left if not worse. Joker himself existed before the Cowl. He might be a response as Gordon put it (wearing a mask and creeping around rooftops) but all that evil and sickness was there before. He just gave him a counterbalance. Gotham made them both. Only one that is Batman's fault is Harvey. Not because Joker lied and sent him to the wrong place so he saved him instead of Rachel, but that he got him involved trying to be the hero Gotham deserved and that's why Joker broke him because he wasn't the symbol Bruce wanted him to be. He was a man and as Bruce said himself a man can be broken, killed, or ignored. Harvey dying made him that symbol but at the cost of a massive deception. He 'died' a hero, an immortal symbol, and an iconic guide to those who would follow him (Robin). That is why he hung up the tights and went to Cannes.

Daniel Williams I suggest you take your own advice. Ras admitted they tried before and their effort is essentially what made Bruce turn into Batman. He did not bring them there. They were already there as far back as Bruce, age 9. Joker is referenced at the end of Begins as well when he barely started operating at the Batman. Joker fixated on him as his perceived opposite. Only one Bruce caused was Two-face.

There is a maximum force and wieght a structure can endure, but in most superhero movies it seem like those law doesn't apply often so we really don't know, and we can't say something out of that. But if the law of physic really work in those movies ( like, all of them ), and if the helicopter is made with a really light and strong material, I guess with my knowledge that it could had travelled a little faster, but we shall refer to an expert in helicopter to confirm if it is possible. Anyway, don't let a theory ruin your appreciation of the movie, it wasn't intended to do so, just a "not so fun fact" to know and say that the bomb shall always have a little more time for make out and say good bye lul. Next time mat shall call an expert to know if it would be possible in the scenario I describ( with the light and strong material we don't have). (Sorry I'm not the best in english)

It would help reduce the initial blast but the radiation is still present and water is only going to do so much. If you could drop a bomb a good 8000 leagues or more the crushing weight of the ocean could potentially stop the bomb from even going off but just in case it does you'd still have a violent eruption that would at least poke out about a mile above the water.. The water itself would be irradiated for quite sometime but most of the nuclear material would subside to lower leagues until crushed.. Potentially everyone is "saved" and the newborn Atlantic coast is put on quarantine but yes.. A much safer way to detonate the bomb if not potentially stop it all together.

Theory Debunked!! The explosion part is fine but the fallout part is wrong. The plot has Wayne enterprise invent a fusion reactor, which is converted into a bomb. Fusion not fission. Fission creates heavy and radioactive particles that are fallout. Fusion produces helium. There would be no fallout whatsoever, just a big ass explosion. The explosion radius stuff is fine but every other comparison to current and past nukes is false. Modern atomic weapons use fusion but use the energy of fission to start it, therefor producing fallout. A pure fusion reactor would do no such thing. This has little to do with current nuke tech. Love your theories but a big chunk of this one is false.

My question is, why wouldn't he drop the bomb in the ocean? It quite literally could have saved nearly all of those people. A) Water is one of the most effective elements to contain radiation. You literally could go into a nuclear reactor and swim with the uranium, as the only radioactive range is roughly 2 feet. So expand this to a nuclear bomb level and you likely would have less than 75% of the radiation damage to Gotham, if that due to the radioactive fallout dispersing into the water. B)The US military has already done tests on nuclear bombs exploding under water, with MUCH higher payloads, and the waves roughly 2.5 miles away, went up by a mere 4 feet. So damage would be reduced by literally tenfolds. C)And taking into account the extra time he would get if he kept his dick in his pants, Batman could've gotten well over 5 miles away, dropped the bomb, and still have time to let it sink, and fly the fuck away. He could've saved possibly everyone if he wasn't being a horny teenager.

So, I have watched Dark knight Rises several times.... It's not a bomb. It's a power source modified to explode. Considering the lack of details on that particularly mild mcguffin, there's no guarantee it would behave like a nuclear bomb. It was never tested as an explosive device, so they wouldn't be sure what would happen anyway. As far as timing in movies, there is a concept around cinematic time and it doesn't follow second by second, aka it's not Real Time. The bomb is not nearly as big a plot hole as people think, not even as much as The Joker in Dark Knight somehow knowing what everyone is doing, how long they're going to take to do it, and where they will go when they're done. So yeah, it wasn't a nuclear weapon, it was a weaponized Fusion reactor. It's a work of fiction, not just the story but the item itself. Nitpicking the end of this movie has gotten really, really old.

How about a different way of thinking about this. What if batman himself blew up the bomb and that it did not detonate. Just as many bombs are disabled today. He could have used the Batcopters armaments to blow up the bomb with say a missile thus disabling it and causing a much smaller explosion. There would of course be residual radiation contamination but there would be no fallout as with a full on nuclear explosion.

Not sure about the specifics, but nuclear bombs are devices which create an explosion in a specific way, completely different from conventional explosives. So, destroying it properly could work.

normal bomb yes, nuclear bomb, cant. a nuke will start its chain reaction with certain impact and heat, the reason it called a nuclear bomb because of its chain reaction, the way you mention it is like blowing up a nuclear plant and hope it wouldnt start exploding after setting it on fire.. you cant disable a uranium and plutonium by blowing it up... come on.

Actually nuclear bomb does not explode from impact at all. Most probable way of detonating a nuclear bomb is generating plasma and through that heat in the nuclear fuel chamber. Let's assume this "neutron bomb" is an actual definition of neutron bomb, which bases on fission. It's not a dirty bomb really, more of a flash grenade. It flashes huge amount of neutron radiation and leaves behind radioactive material that has extremely fast half time so the radiation is intense, but lasts maximum of couple days. That's the basic info out of the way. The chain reaction statement is real, but it relays on the fact that the material stays together after the explosion, which it won't. Throwing a missile at a nuclear bomb before the main detonation would, yes, probably start the reaction, it couldn't continue because the material gets blown into large area of water. How I personally deal with that ending: It's a new type of power source so I'd say it won't be like a classical neutron bomb. Also the timer was a oversight by the writers, it should've been 5 minutes. Batman drops it into water with a missile set to explode before the main detonation and lastly he flies safely outside of the neutron radiation flash range.
