Transmutation is not a historical film about Gilles de Rais but a short film based on the story of the war hero, companion of Joan of Arc and serial killer of children. It is an interpretation based on historical facts inspired by Eugène Bossard's book "Gilles de Rais, Maréchal de France dit Barbe-Bleue" and a symbolic and philosophical analysis.
Transmutation, a fiction built on oppositions
Gilles de Rais, Joan of Arc, evil/good, vile nature/noble nature, and sometimes the oppositions inevitably come together. Thus, Joan died by fire and Gilles will die by fire! Is it Gilles de Rais' will to follow Jeanne in an identical death in order to be purified in his turn, to join her in the "Lux Aeterna"? Is Gilles looking for her in the guise of young boys and even in the smell of the bodies he consumes? Is he on a mission, a divine mission dictated to him by Jeanne, and how far can a misinterpretation of the Holy Scriptures lead a person who feels invested? This is the question raised by this short film which could easily be transposed to other times...
Another reality
"Dive to the bottom of the abyss, wrote Baudelaire. Hell or Heaven, what does it matter? To the bottom of the Unknown to find something new! "
What can attract some criminals, these monsters themselves, is their excessiveness: they set their own moral standards. Like everyone else, they too have loved, thought, even dreamed, and then they have become the despicable character we know, they have shifted into another reality.
Do we all have this side to us, the attraction to the forbidden, to the evil deep in our soul? History has produced characters like Gilles de Rais who are both repulsive and fascinating and sometimes the cinema has made them almost presentable... Who will admit to not preferring Darth Vader to Luke or Hannibal Lecter to Clarice Starling? And perhaps some will even admit to being less fascinated by repentant criminals because they become too close to us. And after all, as Dostoyevsky wrote, "Nothing is easier than to criticise an abject being, nothing is more difficult than to understand him".
Between light and shadow
Between the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance, everything oscillates between light and shadow in this short film and several artistic references are present, such as Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper" or Georges de La Tour's "The Newborn"...
But what is transmutation: what does this alchemical term linked to the character of Gilles de Rais mean? A Gilles de Rais who is alternately divided between his passion for purity, which he transposes into the personality of Joan of Arc, a passion for the arts and music, but also a murderous madness which gradually invades him in a Middle Ages still impregnated with religious fanaticism. Good, evil, such is this society, the one that conceives only two options, a binary conception without nuances... Either one is totally Good, or totally Evil, is this inherent to the past time...?
There are always several interpretations, several colours like those chosen for this short film: Red, black, white, yellow, the colours of transmutation... ". The transmutation which is the fact that a body changes substance, passing from a "vile nature" Gilles de Rais, cultivated man, and killer of children to a "noble nature". ...but what will be this noble nature resulting from transmutation?
