Get 10% off your purchase of Dehancer using ROBELLIS at checkout - www.dehancer.com/ Film vs film emulation - a more complicated topic than just simple comparisons, due to the variables in film development and the film emulation process. But we made some comparisons anyway! And Dehancer Photo was the best way to do it - along with taking a look at how exactly Dehancer Photo emulates the film development process. We also take a look at Dehancer's film emulation app for iPhone, which has changed the way I view an iPhone as an image capturing device - turning a phone into something that, to me, feels like using a point and shoot film camera (plus the added benefits of portrait mode) without the hassle and costs of developing film.

I just bought Dehancer recently, so it is great to see how you are implementing it, and showing it beside real film shots makes it such an awesome video. Thanks Rob!

As someone who has shot film for many years and done development and scanning at home, I'll take the accurate digital emulations these days. Cost of film and development in addition to the time sink of scanning and conversion (then editing) is just more than I want to deal with these days. The ability to edit with a film look is close enough for me to get that look I'm used to with the superior cost and workflow of digital.

Absolutely! I also think it's a struggle sometimes when you work with a visual medium to get hung up on certain processes and looks and in turn only being satisfied with the way something appears when those conditions are met. I love the "feeling" of film, but I'm definitely aware of my biases toward it - and film emulation, like you said, is close enough to get that need met, whilst having enough flexibility to push past it and create something new when I want to get out of my comfort zone!

Fantastic in Depth Comparison. It is important to get as close a possible as you can get to the "target", but also not to get lost. I agree to 100% with you that if it feels like film it is good enough. A math doesn't have to be perfect. And you still have to grade the image underneath the emulation, or after. And make creative decisions.

Thank you so much! Absolutely! It was nice to match up to the film shots as a demonstration (and a good way to show how accurate the emulation is), but it's not something I would do in general - I trust Dehancer's emulation process, and it looks like film - everything else you can tweak is part of your own creative process!

@@RobEllisCinematographer Thanks again. Dehancer is giving away the tool to many KZbinrs but you are the first one that goes "in depth". And I think it is important as a filmmaker / colorist that we have control over the tools and not the other way around. And it is super important that we can understand the tool and "trust" a tool.

I've been thinking about Dehancer for a while. I tried out so many presets and profiles in lightroom and nothing really stuns me. A lot of times the colors or the feel of a picture is close to film, but the digital nature always stays onto it. As I've watched your video I honestly couldnt believe the results. The emulation is spot on and the sliders and configurations are exactly the ones needed. It's a bit of a back and forth workflow, but it's definately worth it! You might've convinced me now to try out Dehancer! Thank you for your effort to put this out!

I'm glad I could sway your decision toward it, it's a fantastic bit of software! It is a little back and forth for sure, but processing and editing real film can be a longer process too - so it kind of makes sense! Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! :)

Excellent and interesting comparison. No one could tell that the Dehancer processed image was actually a digital one without prior knowledge as you said.

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏You are extremely detailed, and every detail helps us understand better. I would like to ask you to make a video deepening the importance of blocking light, because without it light leaks and does not create the desired look, controlling light through blocking is very important, and I would love to learn from you.

Thank you so much Elias, happy you're learning from my videos! I made this one for Shutterstock about 5 months ago - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jorbdHSDltSMfpo - more about negative fill than actually blocking light, but it may help all the same!

@@RobEllisCinematographer 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 This one is really important and I look forward to watching and continuing to learn from you, but what I would really like to learn as well is how to use the blockers, shape the light, shape it, direct it the way you want it, to prevent the light from going in all directions. you have the quality so that I can trust your teachings.

I wish there was a video to show side by side comparisons of dehancer vs film without all of the editing you did to get it close. What is the point of buying this software if you have to go in and do that much editing to get it close??

Hi. I bought this product last week. The plug in for Lr isn’t working properly (very small text and UI menus over each other). It seems a problem with scaling. However the Ps plug in works fine which means there’s a problem with the Lr plug in not with my computer. I’m using a Dell XPS powerhouse designed for photographers with Win10. I contacted Dehancer support who asked for some info and then they never got back to me yet. No follow up. Very disappointing. I’m going to file a claim with PayPal and get my money back shortly.

Looks good but still digital. Why not print you're digital to film and back. Certain companies offer services to public. It looks better than most film emulations. The images has that real world tangible look.

I think the comparisons are extremely close to the point of genuinely not being able to tell! Show me that final Dehancer Portra 400 emulation or the Kodak Gold 200 emulation in the video and tell me it was shot on film and I wouldn't have any reason to believe otherwise - they're pretty much identical next to the real thing with those tiny tweaks. I would definitely love to try digital printed to film and scanned back and one day I might - but it's also quite specific and I probably don't live anywhere near a company that does it - so costs and timing would definitely add up!

I put far too much effort into this video and have a massive love for this sort of thing for it to be a simple advert - that's why the offer is at the end, where the lowest percentage of viewers will see it! I shoot myself in the foot business-wise sometimes so things like this aren't dishonest and transparent :)

@@RobEllisCinematographer I’m sure you’re telling the truth. It’s just how things are, it’s hard to believe in something when someone is selling it or promoting it. Not necessarily meaning it’s a bad product. Good video tho , thanks for sharing

@@FastAkira absolutely, I agree with you! It's definitely a challenge when affiliate stuff is a part of how you make your living and I'm sure it's a thing a lot of creators struggle with. Best way I try to deduce whether something is honest or not (regardless of an ad/offer/placement) is if it feels like a good amount of effort has gone into the video - and if that level of effort and quality is the same across the creator's other videos. It's usually quite obvious when a video is there purely to sell something! It's helpful to discuss stuff like this sometimes as it's not always so clear cut. Thank you so much - I appreciate it!
