Extremely dark, depressing, upsetting and disturbing but ultimately powerful. A brave film that realistically examines sexual violence and has a mature take on a taboo subject like incest and not only how it destroys an family but relies on guilt and shame to be kept a far secret. Phenomenal performances and beautiful cinematography, Tim Roth is not only a great actor but who knew he'd be a gifted director as well. A film that many will understandably be too upsetting for but a film that everyone should see. Not many movies are this gutsy and brave

Did anyone else find it weird how almost everyone in this family felt comfortable walking around naked or half naked around each other?

The War alone and Nil by Mouth. Ray Winston is so real in both, and both are incredibly disturbing. Hats off to Tim Roth for this one. Both Ray Winstone and Tim Roth are on my given list, so it's very difficult to watch these films and yet keep them there!!

Harrowing is the correct word to describe this film. The 'bareness' of the scenary is a powerful depiction which is depicting the 'trauma aspect of the film kept secret', the jagged rocks and icy cold sea crashing waves hitting the rocks in a backwards and forwards manner no different than the act of the abuse itself. The cold rain, non verbal language, the pretense of normality, the concrete hut used for secret abuse of the teenage daughter - - - - - that we see through Tom's eyes as he watches in horror at a scene before him is excruciating and tortuous and so painfully sad. The deep deep trauma of this film is depicted in the grim greyness of the icy isolated remote environment surrounding it - the silence, the loss of language which cannot speak the unspeakable secret til the final scene where a choice is made to end it all. Brilliant film that took on a very powerful subject matter of Incest and Betrayal. If you have not seen this film you will never forget it once you do. Tim Roth in my opinion has tackled a very dark subject and brought it into the light for examination and did an incredible job with attention to detail.

I can't believe Tim Roth directed this. He is an actor most known for Quentin Tarantino movies. Pretty cool.

IMHO . .one of the bravest films to feature Ray Winstone . .a very unsettling film but powerful non the less . .

Nil By Mouth is also brilliant.

The background reminds me of Breaking the Waves. The depressing weather, rocks hitting the waves, bleak and gray. And this is a powerful movie that will stay with me forever. Roth made a bold statement with this film. I think the father moved them out in the middle of nowhere because he had committed immoral crimes in London and wanted full reign with his teenage daughter and the new baby. The bar man can tell something is off about the father. He moved them to that isolated place deliberately to keep up his evilness.

@@1258melody I’ve seen it about 13 years ago so my memory of it is not very good, but from what I can remember, doctors discover during a check-up that the father was sexually abusing the baby (as well, alongside his teenage daughter) 😢 That was a very sad film to see, but powerful. And I watched it with a guy whose father, I realised, had an incestuous relationship with his older sister. He was so shook up by it. He said to me: “Why did you put this shit on?”. And he was right, I was insensitive, when it’s so close to home it hits different.
