With the recent news of Disney dropping/firing Johnny Depp and Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and rebooting it with Karen Gillan, let's take a look back at a movie that even though did feature Jack Sparrow, still didn't feel like a true Pirates movie but more like a rebooted spinoff: On Stranger Tides. Let's see what the problems with On Stranger Tides are that make it seem like not a true Pirates movie, and then at the same time find the dangers of what happens when you try to make a Pirates of the Caribbean film that isn't a Jack Sparrow film. The short answer is: nothing good happens.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)
Flamboyant seafarer Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) lands himself in a bit of a bind after being lured onto Blackbeard's (Ian McShane) ship by enigmatic siren Angelica (Penélope Cruz), and forced to seek out the Fountain of Youth. ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Reboot Moving Forward With A Female Lead Pirates of the Caribbean 6 Johnny Depp fired for reboot Disney fired Johnny Depp Pirates 6 Karen Gillan Dead men tell no tales the impostor jack sparrow dead man's chest how to build the perfect plot pirates of the caribbean 6 kraken watch pirates of the caribbean full movie online free 4k clip pirates 6 trailer sequel johnny depp pirates 6 jack sparrow johnny depp not in pirates 6 dropped fired disney marvel mcu tony stark jack sparrow funniest moments jack sparrow best moments birds of prey the impostor deadpool jack sparrow Top 10 Funniest Jack Sparrow Moments Johnny Depp strikes BACK! Trapped on the Queen Anne's Revenge with the most nefarious pirate in history, Captain Jack reflects on his past with the elusive Angelica while embarking on his wildest adventure to date. With shambling zombies on deck and gorgeous mermaids beckoning sailors into the icy waters below, this time Jack Sparrow has his work cut out for him.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)
Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) returns for another adventure on the high seas in the fifth installment of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Hunted by the malevolent Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), Sparrow sets out on a quest to find a mystical artifact known as the Trident of Poseidon, and gains two new allies along the way: a gorgeous astronomer (Kaya Scodelario) and a young sailor (Brenton Thwaites) with a connection to Sparrow's past. Geoffrey Rush, Keira Knightley, and Orlando Bloom co-star. Directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (Kon-Tiki).
-
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) returns to the screen for another round of supernatural adventures on the high seas in this spirited sequel to the 2003 Disney hit, which re-teams original director Gore Verbinski with original screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio. As Will (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) prepare to exchange vows at the altar, their wedding plans hit rough waters with the arrival of sea-bound scallywag Jack Sparrow. It seems that Sparrow owes a substantial blood debt to half-octopus sea captain Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), and that the only way for the flamboyant sea rover to elude the wrath of his otherworldly pursuer is to seek the aid of mysterious and powerful voodoo priestess Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris), whose ability to resurrect the dead and gaze into the future may provide just the advantage needed to avoid a waterlogged fate in the locker of his legendary nemesis.

RandomGuy15 funny tangent, but the same with assassins creed. They keep making new games that are not like the original assassins creed but for some reason they wanna keep the title. They’re afraid of rebranding and people might lose interest. I honestly think it has the opposite effect. People start to resent the company and the IP cuz they just can’t leave the classics be classics dammit.

This movie is kinda like a DLC expansion for a game: -It introduces a new plot, characters, etc.. -You got your protagonist from the main game who isn't important to the story but helps along the way. -Little to no connection to the main story. -In the end it really changes nothing for the protagonist or the main story but gives him some new shit to take home with.

I preffer to comparite to a filler season of an Anime: -We have events that are big on themselves but not as big as the main plot and that never intetfers with the main plot. -We have unique conceptual characters that are not developed outside of their introduction, mostly because we will never see them again. -We have an exact portion of the main cast on this story, totally ignoring anything else. -We have some good World Building that doesnt intetfers with the main plot, mostly because it would be irrelevant otherwise.

Astonishing. This literally encapsulates the feeling of watching this for the third time and still wondering if it’s good. It’s DLC...so it’s not required to enjoy the main stuff but it’s there if you want a bit more.

I'd argue that Barbosa is the real protagonist of this movie; he's the one with the motivation and part of the driving force of the plot. Jack acts as more of a PoV character for the audience. I also don't mind Barbosa going back to being a pirate at the end of the movie, it really fits his character that he'd be a British privateer only as long as it suits him.

He plays the leader in charge because its usually his ship and when it isn't he is scheming to get one for himself if he isn't busy fixing his immediate problem like being hand cuffed or trapped on Blackbeards ship. But in the first 3 movies the main character wasn't Jack, but Will and Elizabeth. It's Wills quest, it's their romance, it's their character arc. The fourth and fifth film feel like the Jack Sparrow spin off everyone wanted but didn't know wouldn't work.

I liked the Spanish reason for hunting the fountain. It made all of the men on their side doing it seem actually commited, and principled in their beliefs. Even if the movie were to cannotocally give reason that their belief was wrong, they are still principled in believing what they are doing is truely right. Because here it is not an instance of using your dogma to harm others, or take advantage of others. Here these men are purposefully destroying something that could benefit them greatly(temporal immortality) because they truely believe it to be correct. That's a pretty damn cool driving reason to me.

Would've been cool that in the beginning of the film,he was in the search of the fountain of youth to get another chance at being immortal. It's also cool to think that immortal has been somewhat of a recurring theme here. In the first film, he could've taken the cursed aztec gold but also didn't want to deal with the consequences of being an undead skeleton. In the 2nd film, he died but somehow escaped the locker. In the 3rd,he contemplates stabbing the heart for 2 reasons, the responsibility it takes to be immortal (ferrying souls to the other side for eternity and only 1 day on land) and because Will was literally dying right in front of him. In this film, there is no consequences in in being immortal,or at least trying to take the years of someone else. No trade off but to find some bloke who hates his life and is young. Would've been cool to see him still search for a way to be immortal.

Part of the reason this one feels more like it’s own standalone adventure is because that’s what the story originally was. It’s an adaptation of a 1987 pirate fantasy novel called On Stranger Tides. While the book had its own original characters, the movie obviously uses the established characters from the previous Pirates of the Caribbean movies instead.

Honestly - whilst I appreciate that objectively the first film was pure genius, and the first trilogy was incredibly well put together and consistently brilliant - I really liked this one, too. Yes, Jack (*Captain) isn't strictly necessary for the plot of this film, but he was also originally supposed to be a side character in the first film, too. He's not meant to be the central character of the plot - he's at his best when he seems to end up as significant, almost by chance. In the first film, as I've said - he's really a glorified side character. In the second, again he has his own motives that are seemingly separate from the main plotline, and he only becomes significantly central in the third installment because of his position as one of the pirate lords, who aren't in themselves that centrally important - I challenge you to name three of the other ones, apart from Barbossa and Elizabeth. If the story was told from the perspective of some of the other Pirates and their respective struggles against The East India Company, it might well be that Jack never makes a significant appearance. No, Jack really serves two roles in these films: first, as a way to unite all the other plotlines, being the common denominator between all of the other protagonists and antagonists, to provide narrative cohesion in the films' climaxes, but generally serving a secondary role in all of the respective subplots; second, and foremost, as a catalyst for character development, and masterful comic relief. He's a drunk pirate genius, with a good heart, buried under a lifetime of misfortune, betrayal, imprisonment, abandonment and ultimately, loneliness, hiding behind a facade of a smartass, swashbuckling, masterful escape artist, who's predominant motive is seemingly low-resolution short-term self-preservation, because that's all he's ever known. His greatest moments are when he manages to transcend the limitations of learn-ed self-interest, and he decides to let his good heart shine through and sacrifice his own interests for the benefit of others - like at the end of Dead Man's Chest, or when he saves Will and sacrifices his chance of living forever at sea. These themes stay consistent in films 4 and 5, too, and I think the main problem has been the lack of a proper overarching plot - they wasted an opportunity with developing the characters from Stranger Tides into their own saga, as they did in the first three films. But Pirates films they have always been, and Captain Jack Sparrow has always stayed true to form, and so I've always enjoyed watching this series.

Okay, so here’s a real barebones rewrite of this movie. 1. France and Spain are having naval conflicts in the Caribbean following the defeat of Davy Jones and the fall of the East India company. Barbosa, being an opportunist, chooses to sign on as a privateer to get more free access to move as he pleases, and pillage undetected and get paid to do so. Plus, it gives him a perfect angle to justify his pursual of... 2. Blackbeard is back. Blackbeard has been keeping a relatively low profile the past few movies. He’s old now, and weaker than he used to be. Davy Jones may have had it out for him, so he was laying low while the second and third movies were occurring. He’s physically not as competent as he once was, but his magic control of his ship, and his zombie crew give him some power to throw around, as well as his ruthlessness. Now that Jones is dealt with, and the EI company is gone, he’s poised to return to his former glory, he just needs to regain his old power, via the fountain. He plans to use voodoo to enslave the tiny ships in bottles to his control, essentially creating a fleet totally under his command. 3. Jack wants the Pearl. Plain and simple, he learns that Blackbeard has his ship, and sets out to find him, stumbling into a bigger plot and deciding he has to stop Blackbeard to save his ship, and prevent Blackbeard from regaining his youth and all

Some months ago I actually rewatched all 4 movies. And it’s funny, I remembered liking 4 pretty well. Obviously nothing beats the trilogy, but I thought it was a solid addition. However, after rewatching it, I realized why, although it’s not terrible, it doesn’t hold a candle to the first three. And, in my opinion on where the movie fails, I can mostly point the blame to Blackbeard as the villain. What I realized is that, one thing that made the 3 originals so great was how heavily interconnected so many of the characters were. Each villain we meet-Barbossa, Beckett, and Davy Jones-have a history with Jack. His first mate who mutinied against him, his past employer who branded him a pirate after he freed a ‘shipment’ of slaves, and the man he made a deal with _for his soul_ to bring back his beloved ship the Wicked Wench, then renamed the Black Pearl. Blackbeard.... doesn’t have that. He is super bland as a villain. Angelica, she’s great. Why? She’s _also_ got a history with Jack and she’s a really fun character overall. The fountain of youth concept itself is interesting too. Barbossa is back and we get to see him from an unexpected angle. And although this is a contentious point, I personally like the mermaid romance subplot, which might be my inner girl talking. But because Blackbeard is so dull, and the purpose of their fountain of youth journey is significantly tied in to his character goals, it brings down much of the movie with him.

@@asiancommunication-yl9ng It didn’t have to meddle with the OG trilogy to be a good movie. Explaining your villain away by saying “they’re just a bad man”, still doesn’t make for a satisfying villain (in most cases). I don’t really see much of an argument in your point. It is my opinion that Blackbeard is not a compelling villain, and therefore is a big flaw of the movie. Blackbeard could have been given more interesting motivations than what we got. You’re free to disagree, but that’s my personal thoughts. Again, it’s an okay movie, it’s just not great like the originals are.

It's more like he's the central character who's not always at the fore, while the 'main' character tends to change depending on what part of the story is being told. He's the spine that leaves all other stories unable to be told without him. Possibly having the central character who isn't the main character, is a reason movies today don't make much sense, since movies weave stories around unimportant characters who come to the fore then disappear & try tying it all into the central character who had nothing to do with most of it leaving the audience doing mental gymnastics instead of just enjoying a movie.

If I were making this movie, I would’ve cut jack out completely and made the main character Barbossa: maybe as a privateer, he is safe as well as rich, but he feels empty or hollow because there’s no more risk, and nobody gives him a challenge. Moreover, he’s bitter about Black Beard taking his ship and his leg (maybe a crew member can mention it and he kills them to show that). Then we can have this scene: King George: we want you to get the fountain of youth Barbossa: I sleep King George: Black Beard wants it Barbossa:*REAL SHIT* And then we can have Edward and Hector have this cat and mouse relationship the whole movie, and then they fight in the end of the movie. Maybe we can also have Blackbeard almost kill Angelica at some point. Then Blackbeard and Barbossa stab each other, and Angelica saves Barbossa at the end. Barbossa takes Queen Ann’s Revenge at the end of the movie a new man. Bing Bang Boom, go to Tortuga, roll credits

Thanks for making this video! I saw this movie years ago, before I'd heard many film critiques, and even I noticed a massive sense of emptiness... I could really understand the problem of 'telling, not showing', when it came to establishing Jack and the lady's relationship. Whereas in the first films, we're introduced to Elizabeth, Will and Jack as strangers, and get to go through the journey of knowing them just as they get to know each other, in this film, we're told that Jack and the new lady have history, but we don't get to watch them develop, so their relationship is meaningless to us! I hadn't picked up on the issues with the plot, but even the issues with character development in this movie was enough to make it feel like nothing much happened.
