This looks like a JVC GZ-EX555 or similar. That model was released in 2013 so it is less than ten years old :-) You can tell it's not 20 years just by the fact that it uses SDXC cards and has 16 gb of built in flash storage. A 20 year old camera would be a bit more challenging to use today since it would most likely be a mini-dv camera with a firewire connection. Looks fun though!

I think the low contrast, limited dynamic range and deep DOF create something which is 'anti-cinematic'. It looks unpolished and 'real' in a way that shooting on high end gear doesn't. To me it has a similar effect to film (I'm not saying it looks like film) in that the technical fidelity takes a back seat to the emotional content. I think also like you mentioned, people feel comfortable letting their guard down around a camcorder. I don't think it's entirely nostalgia, but instead in an age of hyper-glamorized social media posts through which people attempt to turn their life into a movie, camcorders do the opposite.

What a beautiful summary of the camcorder era……
@jimfixespixels2 жыл бұрын
It’s so interesting to me to watch younger people review “retro” tech like this where I have to force myself to remember that: yes. This camcorder is actually retro. I still have a disdain for this era of video because coming from the standard def days, I had been desperate for cameras that shot filmy 24p wide latitude video(without renting a cinema camera) which we didn’t really get until people started hacking the canon 5d mkii. I remember the first time I saw footage off of a hacked 5d I just felt like “guys. We made it. The wait is over.” Maybe I should revisit some of these older camcorders. Even though the avchd codec is HOT garbage. Anyway. Amazing video.

@DoubleMonoLR Жыл бұрын
There's nothing wrong with the codec itself. It's being fed an image from a small sensor combined with a massive zoom lens system, which almost certainly degrades the image. Slap a variable 38x optical zoom(with small lenses) on a phone and it's almost certainly going to suffer too, unless perhaps it's a very expensive lens.| They typically also used a low bitrate to reduce storage space, and stay within card speeds of the time. As card(and supporting electronics) speed increased, they possibly kept the limit to avoid competing with their professional cameras. Low bitrates have also been a common issue on many types of cameras. AVCHD is very similar to blu-ray, and uses the very common h.264 compression, which was also used by the 5D Mk II... The 5D hack just increased the bitrate, though other Canon DSLRs were electronically incapable of recording at that birate, even when hacked(such as my entry level 550D). The files are in a folder, I don't see how that's a big deal. Create a shortcut, and it's right there. A large proportion of video editors directly support avchd, as it was a common standard. As has already been pointed out, the camera is much newer than y2k, camcorders were vastly different in the early 2000s. Those were standard definition, recorded on tape - usually MiniDV if new or recent, and considerably larger. At the same time as the camcorder in the video was bought(2013 or later), 4k camcorders were also starting to be released, though to a higher end market. eg: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqbOiKGaoclpbs0 You can also still buy similar HD camcorders brand new from Sony, Panasonic etc. Likewise there are similar(& other better/increasingly more expensive) modern camcorders that support 4k etc. People have shunned camcorders in part due to just assuming phones are best at everything. The optical zoom range alone means even these older/simpler/cheaper models are vastly superior to phones where considerable zoom is needed. Likewise never overheating, comfort, and easily swapping storage & batteries(which already last for hours of recording).

The footage from that camcorder definitely has some aesthetic quality despite being technically inferior to modern cameras. To be honest I expected worse quality. I stumbled upon this video since I'm actually looking for a camcorder in 2023. I have been using a mft camera for filming outside action but the controls for videos are very inconvenient on any dslr-like body let alone basically complete lack of motorized zooms. Anything built around cages, external motors for lens rings etc. has huge weight and breaks down with heavy rain and dust getting between the parts. I hope to find a modern camcorder or will just get one of the old ones.
